A Great Pleasure

This book is unlike any I have read about gender or sexuality; indeed it is different from any psychoanalytic book I am familiar with. Donald Moss writes beautifully and thinks unusually clearly---which means that the book is a great pleasure--as well as conceptually well-argued and original. I was very appreciative of the rigor of Moss's ideas which seem to draw on a careful and serious reading of Freud. Nothing slapdash or sloppy here. His argument about masculinity is grounded in classical Freudian ideas but his reading is radical and freeing. I recommend this book wholeheartedly.

Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Man

This brilliant, audacious book begins by describing the author's responses to a giant Calvin Klein ad on a New York City street that depicts a gorgeous young man who is naked except for his Calvin Klein briefs. The author drives by it day after day as he notes his varied and shifting reactions and his difficulty in conceptualizing his multifarious responses. What an astonishing and refreshing place to begin a psychoanalytic book -- with the author's uncertainty! The book engages masculinities in so many ways -- by rethinking Freud's ideas, as a memoirist in telling first-person stories of the author's childhood, adolescence, and adulthood, by presenting telling clinical moments with patients, and by drawing on literature and film. It's a tour de force of psychoanalytic writing.

21st Century Psychoanalysis on Display

This is a book which can be read by social scientists, anthropologists and psychoanalysts seriously. It engages in what Moss calls a 'binocularity' which neither reduces the seriousness and depth of a psychoanalytic vision of the person nor reduces social analysis to superficial cultural or political simplicities. While taking the unconscious mind seriously, it engages in personal ethnography, and provides a bridge between substantial 21st century psychoanalysis and its remarkable epistemological positioning on experience, and post Butler gender studies. It deserves to be read in the social sciences, and gender studies as much as psychoanalytic institutes.
