About the Author
Rose Solari is the author of two full-length collections of poetry, Difficult Weather and Orpheus in the Park, and the play Looking for Guenevere, which retells Arthurian legend from a woman’s perspective. Her poetry and prose have appeared in many journals and anthologies, including American Poetry: The Next Generation, Just Like A Girl: A Manifesta, and Initiate: New Oxford Writing. She is the recipient of the Randall Jarrell Poetry Prize, an Academy of American Poets University Prize, an EMMA Award for excellence in print journalism, and grants from the Maryland State Arts Council and the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities. In spring of 2012, she will be a visiting fellow at Kellogg College, Oxford. She lives in Bethesda, Maryland.

A SECRET WOMAN by Rosa Solari

There may be nothing more delicious to read than a novel written by a poet. There is no more satisfying reading experience because the language is there, the phraseology, sensibility, and imagery. But this would count for nothing in fiction if we didn't have a strong character leading the story. Louise Terry is just that. She is hip; she is funny; she is real. This is a truly an accomplished first novel for it is clear-headed and yet complex. There are levels, veils of mystery, and a journey to take but we are guided by a sure hand for the author does not stumble and is in control of her material at every juncture. We're in good hands. What I like best is the survey of popular culture covered in the book: current art, music and literature pepper the plot so we are always actively part of the world even when Louise Terry's search takes us to its peripheries. I want to comment on the physical properties of the book itself.When was the last time you held double edge pages and a cover more a collector's item than a commercial one. This is the kind of book we used to keep to hand down to the family.And I just might do that.
