About the Author
Alan Cheuse, National Public Radio's longtime "voice of books," is the author of five novels, four collections of short fiction, the memoir Fall Out of Heaven, and the collection of travel essays, A Trance After Breakfast. As a book commentator, Cheuse is a regular contributor to National Public Radio's "All Things Considered." His short fiction has appeared in The New Yorker, Ploughshares, The Antioch Review, Prairie Schooner, New Letters, The Idaho Review, and The Southern Review, among other places. He teaches in the Writing Program at George Mason University and the Squaw Valley Community of Writers.

Moving, meditative stories about loss

The trauma of loss, and the long shadow it casts over our lives, lies at the heart of Alan Cheuse's moving collection of three novellas, "Paradise, or Eat Your Face." The question Cheuse seems to be asking in these works is: how do we live with the pain of losing someone we love? All three works feature writers in key roles, which is all the more interesting because we think of writers as professionally suited to coping with trauma--writers can write about their pain, can't they? Yet, as these novellas show, the task of understanding, never mind expressing, what is in the human heart is no easy matter.
The first novella, from which the collection takes its name, tells the story of Susie Wheelis, a thirty-five-year-old travel writer. For all her professional success, Susie's personal life is in chaos. Susie's mother died when she was very young, and even as a teenager Susie struggles to come to terms with her loss. She remembers her mother telling her about a magical place called the Land of the Lost, "a place where all the things you lost turned up," and perhaps in search of her kind of Paradise, the grown-up Susie takes a trip halfway around the world to Bali. But as the novella's foreboding title suggests, what she finds there could be something quite different.
The second novella, "Care," draws us into the charmed circle of the novelist and academic Rafe Santera, whose larger-than-life intelligence and physical magnetism prove irresistible to his female students, and a young woman named Moira in particular. Years later the two lovers' paths cross again, but by then Rafe has suffered a stroke, and has lost the ability to speak coherently. Even so Moira, who takes on the job of caring for Rafe, can't help wondering if she's falling for him all over again...
In the third novella, "When the Stars Threw Down Their Spears and Watered Heaven with Their Tears," the protagonist is a writer in his sixties named Paul Brunce. Over the course of a long and prolific career, Brunce has avoided writing about his troubled younger sister, Mira, but when he remarries and his new wife asks about his childhood, Mira's past is brought to light, and the reason for Brunce's reluctance to delve into his family history is made devastatingly clear.
The intimate portraits Cheuse paints of his characters enable us to see, in heartbreaking detail, how haunted we are by loss--whether it is of a parent, or a child, or a sibling, or even ourselves, our own youthful innocence. And as these stories suggest, the struggle to come to terms with the consequences may be what makes us all human.

Maybe just a Duo?

I really enjoyed the first two novellas and would recommend getting the book just based on the strength there. I couldn't really get into the last one though.
