The Missing Link

Seven years ago, when defining a comprehensive infrastructure for Data Warehousing at MCI, we made sure to include a component that we labeled "Organization/Process", as a category for related deliverables. In my many years of Information Technology experience, implementations continue to "miss their potential" because technologists do not consider and account for the intergration of solutions into an existing environment. This book is one of the keys to successfully implementing the component we defined.
Jim introduces and brings together existing thoughts and research regarding leveraging the human aspects of business with a new perspective, and then adds his own research for good measure.
This book is a "must read" for project planners of major Information Technology implementations (especially for CRM initiatives) who want to mitigate risk factors that are otherwise lost in activities deemed "out of scope". Each implementation should include tasks and responsibilities to map the collaborative activities of the resulting: work, people, technology and data. David P. Mysteries demystified

Essentially this is a fascinating book on some proposed evolutionary psychology explanations of human behaviors and characteristics, i.e. the ways these behaviors might have conferred survival and reproductive benefits. Four areas are explored: sex, art, religion and intelligence. The first is most satisfactorily explained. So successful that I don't think there is any mystery left (although the author poses a more modest claim). It attempts to explain for instance, quoting Dr Sarah Hrdy, "a disconcerting mismatch between a female capable of multiple sequential orgasms and a male partner typically capable of one climax per copulatory bout" (page 58). Likewise, with five pages of 83 references, it attempts to explain how natural selection allows the persistence of homosexuality, when this should ostensibly reduce reproductive success by definition. Another interesting topic covered is the uniqueness of human females having prominent breasts even when not lactating - this is not observed in other mammals or primates.

The chapters on art and religion, however, are less rewarding. Readers can decide themselves how convincing they are. E.g. if art is a by-product of sexual selection (Chapter 6), then should we not expect more female connoisseur when/if there is a preponderance of male artists? And shouldn't artists in general have disproportionately more progeny?

There are two chapters on religion. Although interesting, there is something missing or even amiss here. The two definitions of religion used in the book, one by Daniel Dennntt (p. 210) and the other by Emil Durkheim (p. 239), restricts the discussion primarily to the social aspects of religion. The book does not discuss religious experience at all. Arguably this is of utmost importance to a religious believer. This remains unexplored and still very mysterious indeed. Saying that, it offers some enlightening remarks. E.g. whilst religion may be a form of memes (but what isn't?), the author does emphasize that "it is also possible for memes to be neutral or even beneficial; indeed, the great majority of them probably are" (p. 209). Also, he opines "it might be claimed that a neuronal or genetic substrate for religious belief makes such belief more legitimate, implying that God implanted the appropriate genes or orchestrated the neuronal connections" (p. 203). Theists need not to worry here.

The penultimate chapter on intelligence is stimulating. The question of "if human intelligence skyrocketed because our ancestors lived in social groups surrounded by other ... ... why didn't the same thing happen to other species?" (p. 292). I will leave it to you to read about his answer. It is quite inspiring.

Overall very informative. Fully worth the while.

Recommend, Chapters 2-10 are great

I also purchased this book after a review in 'Scientific American.' It includes very entertaining discussions considering unsolved human mysteries, from menstruation and hidden ovulation to religion. If chapter 1 gets you down, I recommend continuing on to chapter 2 and beyond, which will not disappoint. Now this is only my opinion, of course -- but I almost put the book down never to pick it up again when trying to read the first chapter, which reads like an Introduction instead of a chapter. Chapter 1 discusses reasons for the title and what the author hopes to accomplish in the text. Why? Maybe in the interest of brevity and fewer pages, editors no longer allow Introductions, forcing the poor authors to include introductory material in chapter 1. However, after skimming/skipping the few pages of introductory material, my expectations for a good read were met beginning with chapter 2. I'll pass the book on to my husband and recommend it to my friends.

The 'Why' of Human Development in terms of ' reproductive advantage'

At the outset of this work David Barash distinguishes between religious 'mystery' and scientific 'mysterious' His approach is one in which he is seeking to understand by scientific means elements in human development which are 'mysterious' By 'mysterious' he means that they may not be known now but are 'knowable' He also makes clear that his focus is on nuts- and- bolts explanations of certain behaviors but rather on the 'why' behind them. He, a long - time teacher of Science, wishes too to stimulate the reader into understanding that while Science is often taught as if he we know and understand completely the subject matter in question in fact in most areas of scientific work unanswered questions abound. For Barash it is clear that these answers will eventually be found by Science. In this work he is taking what he regards as some of the most interesting questions related to human development and exploring them. At the outset he will study pecularities of female human sexuality including 'concealed ovulation' 'prominent breast size and 'women's orgasm'. He will also study same- sex sexuality, the question of why women live longer than men, the development of art and culture, and religion. The explanations he will give will be in terms of what adds to 'reproductive advantage' of those involved. And this though he makes it clear that the answers he gives our not definitive and are subject to further investigation. Still he seems to opt for the hypothesis that none of these behaviors might have simply emerged and remained as part of the human without their having some evolutionary advantage. The one underlying grand principle behind every explanation he suggests is 'reproductive advantage'. However central the concept to explaining the overall development of Life it may well be mistaken to automatically assume it provides the answer for all human developments, including language, bipedalism, our three times larger than any other primate brains.
It is clear that he is at best when he deals with elements more closely connected to the biological and physical. On the broader human cultural subjects it seems that speculation has the upper hand.
The work is nonetheless full of interesting ideas and hypotheses which which may enhance our understanding of various aspects of human development.

Pearson, Ph.D., is an internationally recognized scholar and well-known author of numerous books, among them the bestselling The Hero Within, Awakening the Heroes Within, The Hero and the Outlaw, and Magic at Work. Her forthcoming book, Persephone Rising: Awakening the Heroine Within, will be published in October 2015 and is available for advance orders.

Dr. Pearson's most recent book, The Transforming Leader, is an edited collection of cutting edge essays on the challenges facing leaders in the 21st century that grew out of the Fetzer Institute's Leadership for Transformation Project, for which she was principal investigator. The Transforming Leader was honored by the International Leadership Association for for making a significant contribution to the field of leadership.

Dr. Pearson previously was executive vice president and provost and later president of Pacifica Graduate Institute in Santa Barbara, CA. She has been a senior administrator and professor at higher education institutions including the University of Colorado, the University of Maryland, Georgetown University, and Goucher College; a consultant for multinational corporations and government agencies; and a popular public speaker and workshop leader. An easy-to-read yet rigorous entry point into self analysis

As a software developer and mathematician presently in my early 60's, ever since I can remember I have always been long on technology and short on "people" knowledge Yet from my early adolescence I remember my dad telling me how important it is to know oneself. While I always agreed with this good advice, whenever I explored my soul, I seemed to fail to come up with meaningful, non-judgemental answers - possibly because my questions themselves were not thought provoking.
Enter Ms Peason and her "Heros Within" book. Her brilliant, accessible review of the 12 archetypes that define our personalities suddenly provided me with a new handle - a key to a better understanding of myself and others. What I particularly appreciated in her book was its combination of a rigurous, scientific treatment of the subject, couched in a language both accessible and devoid of academic circumlucutions. I would reccomend her book to anyone who wants to understand himself/herself better and/or redefine his/her professional and personal life.

The book contains self-score instruments that will help readers discover previously untapped sources of personal power. The book seems particularly well suited for adults in their professional years who are looking for ways to clarify their place in the world. The theoretical foundation for the work is both well-grounded and intuitively appealing. Friends, family, and students, have thanked me for the recommendation of this scholarly work. If you sign out breast biopsies, then you really must own Rosen's Breast Pathology AND this small altas. It's now in it's second edition and is meant to be used in conjuction with the larger textbook. The writing, as with all of Rosen's material, is clear, and the pictures range from good to excellent. Joan Hess captured a new and devoted reader with her mystery, A Really Cute Corpse. Using Claire Malloy, an appealing female investigator who is both wise and witty, Hess side-steps blood and violence and focuses on character developement and humor--attractive components to female readers of any age.
A consumate Dorothy Gilman fan (author of the Mrs. Pollifax series and other delightful books) I now search the H authors on each trip to the library--hoping to find a new Joan Hess book on the shelf.
Hess has not created a leading character as lady-like as Mrs. Marple, nor as totally charming as Emily Pollifax, but certainly her women are emotionally strong, mentally awesome, and career-wise down-to-earth, as women of the 90's must be.

Fans of Joan Hess won't be disappointed with this one.The fun starts when Claire Malloy gets conned into directing the Miss Thurberfest pageant and the reigning beauty queen, Cyndi, turns up dead? Whodunnit?? There are plenty of suspects...the slick and slimy senator Stevenson...Arnie, the drunken chauffeur..or possibly Eunice,Cyndi's "trainer" (She was once Miss Cherry Tomato)Claire solves the mystery with just a little help (or is it hindrance?) from boyfriend Peter Rosen and
daughter Caron...an enjoyable book!

I love Joan Hess

This was the first Joan Hess book that I read. I picked it up by chance at the library. I am now totally hooked on her books. I love the Maggody series as well as this one. This book is entertaining and funny. It introduces some charecters that are important to the series down the road. It also was extremely funny. This particular book in the series allows you to really begin to identify with her charecter. Though not her best book,( I liked A Conventional Corpse best) still a strong book by a great author.

After more than 35 years of poetry collections, memoirs, criticism and editorial work, Davison announces that the poems of his 11th collection "mostly assume a single poetic form," one he borrows from the late work of a greater ombudsman, William Carlos Williams. But where Williams's achieves an intuitive elegance through triadic-footed tercets that matched the breath, Davison's free verse tends to go slack along with the material it carries, like the old pal the speaker catches "calculating/ whether life with her might not be/ very convenient, considering her parent's/ money." More at home as a naturalist than a nostalgic storyteller, Davison strikes a keener music when strolling through a "Seaside Summer Quarry" ("Sentried by sabers of iris,/ bared granite rocks/ jut up// from the soft starry beds of/ emerald moss") or observing how "Falling Water" will join "its first// brook and amble off into the yielding/ soft-shouldered marsh past fat roots of/ lilies to linger among the slick fronds// of algae paddled by ducks." Davison, however, is more prosaic when taking on the relationship of Ted Hughes and Sylvia Plath, whether problematically adopting Plath herself as the speaker in "Sorry" ("When I woke up my cheek was full of maggots./ In the hospital they broke my head/ with lightning bolts. Everyone was so kind.") or, even more presumptuously, collaging snippets from some of the couple's more famous poems (Hughes's "Lovesong" and Plath's "Daddy" and "Edge") in a "Ballad" commemorating their "immortal mismarriage,/ their language// splintered and splayed/ in the throes/ of brutality." The effect is not cathartic, transgressive or celebratory in any sense. Davison opens his book with "No Escape" and closes it with the very same poem (only in italics), but readers may have already gone out the back by then. (Sept.)

"Poetry composes, not as modern Western music often does but for the human breath," says Davison, an award-winning poet and editor of the Atlantic Monthly. Nothing revelatory here: Charles Olson put forth a nearly identical thesis in 1950. The poems feel equally staid: Davison's memories of childhood, family, and lost loves are of passing interest, and the moment he veers from specific events, the poems deteriorate into trite generalizations, as when they're addressed to a distant "you." Other pieces pontificate, while still others, such as "Prayer to the Verb," are too whimsical to be considered serious. Forays into nature are ambitious (as in two poems adopting the snapping turtle's voice) but once again uninsightful and disappointing. Despite ten previous books of poetry, Davison has had more influence as an editor than a poet. But, I like lots of them

The pros who reviewed this book have a different agenda than casual readers, I think. (Or is it that there are so few casual readers of poetry? I note that there are very few customer reviews of books of poems...) It seems to me that most readers enjoy having their emotions stimulated by use of poetic language and form, and are less interested in edginess, or newness, or technical fireworks. On that basis, I recommend reading the poem You, referred to by one reviewer as a trite generalization directed at a distant you. Doesn't feel trite or generalized to me--in fact, as it transports me into the experience of someone yearning for his dead mother (pretty specific, huh?) it makes me cry. I don't feel manipulated, just moved. I'm not lost in admiration of Davison's technical achievement, just moved. But I think that's what a poem should do.

The reviewer from Library Journal makes me laugh because she so misread the poem "You". I agree with the previous reader/reviewer, it is very specific, it is clearly addressed to the poet's mother, and it makes me cry too. One of the things that made me decide to change fields after getting my degree in lit was the overwhelming pretension and condescension of professionals, who seem to have forgotten that poetry isn't, or shouldn't be, only for an academic elite who make a career of exegesis.

When and why did the Royal Navy come to view the expansion of German maritime power as a threat to British maritime security? Contrary to current thinking, Matthew S. Seligmann argues that Germany emerged as a major threat at the outset of the twentieth century, not because of its growing battle fleet, but because the British Admiralty (rightly) believed that Germany's naval planners intended to arm their country's fast merchant vessels in wartime and send them out
to attack British trade in the manner of the privateers of old. This threat to British seaborne commerce was so serious that the leadership of the Royal Navy spent twelve years trying to work out how best to counter it. Ever more elaborate measures were devised to this end. These included building
'fighting liners' to run down the German ones; devising a specialized warship, the battle cruiser, as a weapon of trade defence; attempting to change international law to prohibit the conversion of merchant vessels into warships on the high seas; establishing a global intelligence network to monitor German shipping movements; and, finally, the arming of British merchant vessels in self-defence.

The manner in which German schemes for commerce warfare drove British naval policy for over a decade before 1914 has not been recognized before. The Royal Navy and the German Threat illustrates a new and important aspect of British naval history.

About the Author

Dr Matthew S. Seligmann is a well-known historian of the pre-First World War era and has written numerous works on the international conflicts of this period. These include Rivalry in Southern Africa, 1893-99 (1998), Spies in Uniform (2006), and Naval Intelligence from Germany (2007). He has also written articles for such journals as BBC History Magazine, The English Historical Review, German History, Historical Research, The International History Review and The Journal of Strategic Studies. One of these, an essay entitled 'A Prelude to the Reforms of Sir John Fisher', won the 2007 Julian Corbett Prize, Britain's premier award for naval history. Another of his works, Does Peace Lead to War? Peace Settlements and Conflict in the Modern Age (2002), was selected by ALA's Choice magazine as one of its Outstanding Academic Titles for 2003.
