Matthew C. Ward's chapter on Wolfe's Quebec campaign and the disintegrating norms of lawful warfare is excellent. Ward shows how European conventions on what constituted honourable warfare could falter when faced with a population that was neither neutral, nor uninvolved. Wolfe became one of the first British Army officers to sanction methods of Indian warfare against Indians and Canadians dressed as Indians.
