When the group of Englishmen return to France Rocco finds himself the victim of a set-up, leading to his suspension and investigation for bribery. With no badge, no authority and unsupported, Rocco is still determined to continue his investigation...

About the Author
ADRIAN MAGSON began writing short fiction and features for women's magazines, contributing over the years to publications in the UK, US, Scandinavia, Japan and Australia. As well as writing comedy material and stories for BBC radio, he also turned to writing crime thrillers, and was shortlisted for the Crime Writers' Association Debut Dagger Award. Since then he has gone on to have 12 crime novels and spy thrillers published, as well as a writer's help book ('Write On!') and is a regular contributor to Writing Magazine.

Inspector Rocco is intelligent and charming. The other characters are also very well drawn. The atmosphere is pure France! Magson writes an engaging thriller.

Gaulles life is threatened by many groups, all just discovered in time or by chance De Gaulle is somewhere else, but what if all these attacks are just a blind, smoke and mirrors to hide the real attack?

Ponderous plotting

Adrian Magson has chosen an interesting period and place for his series about a French policeman. The early 1960s were a turbulent time in France and Magson's efforts to establish period settings are borne out in the technique he borrows from movie makers of "product placement" from the times to help his readers orientate themselves. Broader political themes that he touches on include the aftermath of the French defeat in Indochina, the simmering differences over the future of the French possessions in North Africa and the target provided by President de Gaulle for many discontented elements. The village of Poissons-les-Marais in Picardy has much to add to any plot in terms of history and conflict going back to the 100 Years War. So the scene is well set, but the writing is sometimes ponderous and the details told the reader rather than shown in conflict with the classic advice to writers. The result is a four star rating where for this reader setting outweighed plot for an enjoyable but not totally convincing read.
