A step beyond textbook Russian

If you have mastered the grammar and have a good vocabulary, this book will go beyond the slang dictionaries to how Russian slang is used. You wouldn't trot out these expressions at a diplomatic event, but you will likely hear them used around you and to you, so this is a valuable start on learning the way people talk in everyday life. The dialogs make the context (students planning a party, young women shopping etc.) clear, and there's an excellent glossary with each chapter and at the end of the book. A good way to improve listening comprehension...after all there are only so many subtitled Russian movies you can watch.

Authoritative most up-to-date guide to the real Russian slang

Having set out to improve my knowledge colloquial Russian earlier this year, I purchased all available titles on Amazon, ranging from some earlier titles from the Soviet era to the two newest "Streetwise Russian" and "Dirty Russian".
Whereas "Dirty Russian" has the format and feel of a Conversation Guide, with all off-colour idiomatic expressions listed in order by topic (not an overly effective mnemonic device), "Streetwise Russian" featured realistic sounding dialogues, while capturing some of the more representative and widely used slang terms I had witnessed Russians use in moments of laid-back relaxation or spontaneous annoyance.
The MP3 disc it comes with (make sure you purchase a new copy, it is well worth it!)make learning easier, as both the dialogues and credibility of the voice actors have the added quality of making contents stick to your brain virtually effortlessly.
Divided into three major themes, "Guy Talk", "Girl Talk" and "Teenager Talk", the ca. two conversations per chapter run the whole gamut of hip urban slang, from the drinking & clubbing scene, to more gender-typed scenarios like girly gossiping, shopping and boy-talk, etc. On the male front, Russian slang aficionados can count on finding all requisite terms from "fightin' it out" to rating the respective attractiveness of females.
An indispensable introduction for those advanced learners who are comfortable with the standard language and mean to hit the ground running while in Russia, this title will serve equally well those intermediate learners who long for an early taste of the rich fabric and extraordinary creativity of informal Russian.
Since most Westerners who learn Russian are never exposed to this language register, those who master the book's contents well and manage to speak with reasonable fluency can expect to receive incredulous looks of equal parts awe and admiration at first mention of one of the more spirited terms!

Great addition to the streetwise series

It's about time they made a streetwise Russian slang book. I actually waited for this book since last year. They are Russian slang books but not as good as the streetwise series.
If you want to know about Russian slang, this is a really good book. It starts off with dialogues - Russian and English together - then the vocabulary and synonyms for them, then some exercises to strengthen your memory for the slang and close off the chapter with a bit of cultural notes.
This book is designed for the intermediary level, so a good basic Russian background such as reading and understanding is required because it is written in Cyrillic.
I'd recommend this book to anyone who wants to take a step further in Russian.
