Remarkable Plants of Texas (Corrie Herring Hooks), by Matt Warnock Turner

With some 6,000 species of plants, Texas has extraordinary botanical wealth and diversity. Learning to identify plants is the first step in understanding their vital role in nature, and many field guides have been published for that purpose. But to fully appreciate how Texas's native plants have sustained people and animals from prehistoric times to the present, you need Remarkable Plants of Texas.

In this intriguing book, Matt Warnock Turner explores the little-known facts—be they archaeological, historical, material, medicinal, culinary, or cultural—behind our familiar botanical landscape. In sixty-five entries that cover over eighty of our most common native plants from trees, shrubs, and wildflowers to grasses, cacti, vines, and aquatics, he traces our vast array of connections with plants. Turner looks at how people have used plants for food, shelter, medicine, and economic subsistence; how plants have figured in the historical record and in Texas folklore; how plants nourish wildlife; and how some plants have unusual ecological or biological characteristics. Illustrated with over one hundred color photos and organized for easy reference, Remarkable Plants of Texas can function as a guide to individual species as well as an enjoyable natural history of our most fascinating native plants.

An interesting, and fun, change from the usual botanical books
By Elayne N. Crain
I bought this book recently and already love it. Besides being very well-written and steeped in interesting facts I never knew about Texas plants, the point of the book is both unusual and fun. Instead of focusing heavily on the "plant identification guide" style of writing (though there are excellent four-color pictures that help you do that), Dr. Turner sets out on a more ambitious goal...to tell the story of each plant and what makes it special to the Texan (and general botanical) landscape, whether it is how the Native American tribes used it, how it connects in unusual ways to the natural world, etc. Each story stands alone but you will find ways in which they interconnect, as well, telling the story of the earliest settlers and beyond. Kudos to this rare gem of a plant book. I have already bought a second copy as a gift to my godmother, who loves Texas plants herself.

Plants of the Lone Star State
By Bryan Carey
Texas covers a large area and thus has a wide variety of plant life. Remarkable Plants of Texas is a good reference guide to some of the common and/or more interesting plants found in the nation's second largest state with plenty of facts just waiting to be absorbed. The book offers not just descriptive details of plants, but other facts as well.

Outdoor types will like this book more than anyone else, but there is plenty about Remarkable Plants of Texas for anyone to enjoy. What really sets this book apart is that it is much more than just another field guide intended to help hikers recognize and identify plants. This guide goes much further than that by discussing many different facts about these selected plants that most people are likely completely unaware. The guide discusses the different uses for specific plants, their cultural significance, and any unusual trivial information about each plant. Many readers will find the historic aspects of different plants quite interesting.

Texas is home to more than six thousand different plants and, thanks to the variations in geography and climate in the Lone Star state, the plant life varies greatly from one part of the state to the next. One fact that may not sit well with all readers is that the book highlights only about sixty- five different plants. Sixty- five is only slightly more than one percent of the six thousand total plants and while this isn't much, it is probably for the better. There isn't enough space to offer so many facts about all six thousand plants and even if the book offered only a minimal number of facts, it would still stretch its pages to the point that multiple volumes would be necessary. The author instead decided to highlight some of the more unusual or interesting plants that dot the Texas landscape in order to result in a more normal size book. Still, there will likely be some readers who feel cheated with such a small percentage of plants receiving coverage.

Remarkable Plants of Texas is an academic reference guide and while the book does point out historical significance and other qualities of each plant, the book's writing remains on an academic level throughout. It sticks to the facts, like a good reference guide should, and avoids creative style. It does offer more actual reading material than most other reference guides, but it is still encyclopedia- like in its approach.

Texas is a large state with more than a quarter million square miles of space and within all of this space there are many unusual plants and trees. Remarkable Plants of Texas wants to better acquaint the reader with these many plant species and even though it isn't the most entertaining read, it offers enough interesting facts, trivia, and unusual uses for different plants that most readers- even those with limited interest- will find it worthwhile.
