Notes from a Coma, by Mike Mccormack

Rescued from the squalor of a Romanian orphanage, and adopted by the rural community of west Mayo, J. J. O'Malley should have grown up happy. The boy has no gift for it, though, and his new life has a brutal way of giving him plenty to be unhappy about. After a sudden tragedy, J. J. suffers a catastrophic mental breakdown. Unable to live with himself, he volunteers for an improbable government project which has been set up to explore the possibility of using deep coma as a future option within the EU penal system. When his coma goes online the nation turns to watch, and J. J. is quickly elevated to the status of cultural icon. Sex symbol, existential hero, T-shirt philosopher─his public profile now threatens to obscure the man himself behind a swirl of media profiles, online polls, and EEG tracings.

Five narrators─his father, neighbour, teacher, public representative, and sweetheart─tell us the true story of his life and try to give some clue as to why he is the way he is now: floating in a maintained coma on a prison ship off the west coast of Ireland. Brilliantly imagined and artfully constructed─merging science fiction with an affectionate portrait of small town Ireland─Notes from a Coma is both the story of a man cursed with guilt and genius and a compassionate examination of how our identities are safeguarded and held in trust by those who love us.

From Booklist
McCormack’s well-received collection of satirical short stories Getting It In the Head (1998) heralded the arrival of a major talent in Irish fiction. His latest novel, already short-listed for the Irish Book of the Year Award, steps into a parallel dystopian European Union in recounting the fate of a Romanian orphan adopted by an unmarried farmer from county Mayo. Having grown up as an outsider in a rural Irish community as JJ O’Malley, his life is punctuated by a series of misfortunes culminating in his becoming an unwitting volunteer in an eerie experiment hatched by the EU’s penal system. Instead of putting prisoners behind bars, the Somnos Project keeps them perpetually sedated in a virtual coma, hooked up to life support. As the world monitors their brainwave patterns on the Internet, JJ is annointed as a media darling. Using multiple narrators and continuous footnotes that present a documentary-style view of the skewed society he depicts, McCormack slyly and brilliantly satirizes, among many other things, our fixations with celebrity and high-priced medical technology. --Carl Hays

OK romance. Normal politics. Lousy science.
By Tanstaafl
There are two stories being told in "Notes from a Coma". One is what has taken place and the other is what is taking place. The stories are about JJ O'Malley. There are other characters, but they exist only because JJ existed and are needed to talk about him

The main story (told in the body of the book) is about JJ growing up. I had never contemplated the concept of "narcissism without intent" and that may not be an apt description about JJ. But, it's as close as I can get. It was always all about him, but he was so wrapped up in his world that he never noticed - or would admit to it.

The second story (told in footnotes requiring a lot of back-and-forth page flipping) is about the coma "experiment". This story is told in a much different style and requires much more from the reader. In time it became far better than the main storyline. By the half-way mark I was hoping for more and more footnotes, even though they were not really getting anywhere.

Then, that changed as well. JJ went from being an interesting character to one I could not stand. The author making him as he was for the sake of the story didn't make it any better. It just made the story worse. The coma "experiment" went from interesting concept to illogical in the extreme.

I am quite comfortable with buying into an off the wall premise for the sake of a story. But, I am not willing to buy into a premise that negates the meat of the story. To avoid using a spoiler: suppose you were doing a study of dogs' reactions to loud sounds. You wouldn't choose as your "control" dog one known to howl and run in circles when a refrigerator door is closed.

Interesting set up, but total lack of believability.

five stars for a unique author
By N. Ferguson R.
I didn't love this book, but I found it to be extremely original in its construction, characterizations, and scope. While I expected a dystopic medical thriller/sci fi novel, this is a story about the main character JJ's search for self. JJ is a bright, unconventional adolescent who has difficulty relating to others and understanding his world. The Somnos project offers him a temporary escape. An interesting main character, fascinating premise, and uniquely constructed novel.

One Man's Search for Meaning
By Indoctorinated
Despite its catchy sci-fi sounding title, this book is not a science fiction novel. Nor is it a medical thriller, a dystopian political commentary, or even the main character JJ's biography. Instead, it is the story of his psychological and philosophical self-searching, and how this self-searching results in him volunteering for a project that will allow him to take his mind off his mind for a while by being placed in a coma for several months.

While JJ may have just as much angst as any other adolescent, he's far from being your typical tortured teen. An intelligent and well-read maverick, he confounds his peers, his adopted father, and his teachers with questions and suppositions that confound himself as well. With no answers for his questions, and few people who understand his questions in the first place, it is not surprising that JJ would welcome joining the Somnos project in exchange for being given a temporary escape from his mental maelstrom.

Frequent footnotes are used to present the sociopolitical aspects of the project independently of the main plot about JJ's story. While using footnotes for this purpose is a clever and creative idea, and it makes the book seem more academic or even bureaucratic in its writing style, the footnotes are neither necessary nor relevant to the main story. I read them all for the first several chapters, then started just skimming through them, and finally stopped reading them altogether. Perhaps this means that the author succeeded in his aims; I will confess to doing the same thing when I read textbooks or practice guidelines that have footnotes.

This book was surprising, thought-provoking, and a quick read. I would have given it five stars had the footnotes been organized into their own chapters, or even left out altogether. The book stands alone perfectly well without them.
