Lev Nikoláievich Tolstói nació en 1828, en Yásnaia Poliana. En 1852 publicó Infancia, seguido de Adolescencia (1854) y Juventud (1857). Plasmó sus recuerdos de la guerra de Crimea en Relatos de Sebastopol (1855-1856). El éxito de su monumental novela Guerra y paz (1865-1869) y de Anna Karénina (1873-1878), dos hitos de la literatura universal, no alivió una profunda crisis espiritual, de la que dio cuenta en Mi confesión (1878-1882). Una extensa colección de sus Relatos ha sido publicada en esta misma colección (ALBA CLÁSICA MAIOR, núm. XXXIII ). Murió en 1910, rumbo a un monasterio, en la estación de tren de Astápovo.

muy buena edición para Kindle

Recomiendo mucho esta edición porque la versión electrónica está muy bien hecha, y las notas que contiene son muy pertinentes y útiles: explican algunas cosas importantes sobre el contexto histórico, traducen las muchas frases en otros idiomas que hay en la novela, entre otras cosas. A diferencia de La guerra y la paz, de la que no hay versiones completas para Kindle (en español), este ebook de Anna Karenina es muy recomendable.

Obra maestra

Tolstoi escribió dos grandes novelas y una de ellas es esta. El tema puede parecer trillado a estas alturas o sin actualidad, no obstante la narrativa que presenta es imperecedera. Básicamente nos contrasta los dos tipos de amor: el racional (si es que se le puede llamar así, que es eterno y que puede transformarse pero no morir. El otro tipo de amor, el de la protagonista, el amor pasional, el que es mas intenso en principio y que se extingue, como un incendio, cuando se termina el combustible. Todo lo demás es relleno, pero como el relleno de un buen dulce, que buen relleno. La dificultado principal es hacer una buena traducción que pueda dejar pasar del ruso todo lo que e escribe tan bellamente. Recuérdese que es del amor carnal. Debe leerse. Toma su tiempo pero debe hacerse.

Tolstoy pictures the russian aristocratic society in its dying fits with all its splendor, its dignity, its hypocrisy and the underlying flaws that will drive it mercilessly to its demise. Anna's sacrifice and ordeal mirrors the fall of her decrepit nation.
