From the bestselling author of Goodbye Cobber, God Bless You and Gallipoli Sniper.
When Hugo Throssell joined the 10th Light Horse Regiment in 1914, soon after the outbreak of the First World War, he was emblematic of the young Australian nation at that time: full of youth, vigour, courage and idealism. These traits were to see him awarded a Victoria Cross after the savage fighting for Hill 60 during the Gallipoli campaign. Badly wounded, Throssell was sent to England to recover.
There he met his future wife, Katharine Susannah Prichard, journalist, novelist and committed socialist. It was a relationship that changed the course of his life, for although he was to return to fight in Palestine, his view of the conflict began to turn. By 1919, Throssell - once hailed as an Australian hero - was ready to publicly denounce the war. His stance was to forever alienate him from former comrades and the political establishment. The war affected him in other ways too, as he found himself unable to hold down a job and increasingly prone to episodes of depression. In 1933, Throssell killed himself, leaving behind his beloved wife and only child. In his triumph and tragedy he remained as emblematic to his country as he'd been in those heady days of 1914, an example of courage and sacrifice whose youth and future had been forever darkened by the experience of war.
Award-winning journalist and bestselling author John Hamilton has written a compelling narrative, giving us an extraordinary perspective of the Gallipoli battles for The Nek and Hill 60, combined with a compassionate and intimate account of the rise and fall of a real Australian hero.

Comparisons to the modern era
By Allan Sparkes
I have had a deep interest in World War 1 and the Light Horse Brigade. My grandfather was a member of the Light Horse and his name appears on the list of those who were believed to have taken part in the infamous last cavalry charge in the battle of Beersheba. The description of the battles in this book are some of the best I have read. The bravery of Hugo Throssell VC is extraordinary and it is a humbling experience to read of his exploits. It is a sad experience however, to read of his demise upon his return to Australia and the way his world ultimately fell apart. What a tragic loss of an exceptional person. Upon reflection, I think of the Australian men and women who have and are returning from recent horrific conflicts, both in Iraq, Afghanistan and other areas of the world. It does not matter that they are returning to our country without being adorned great battle honours. They have placed their lives on the line and have no doubt been through their own terrifying experiences. You dont have to have won a Victoria Cross to have endured fear, deep personal fear. I fear for the future of the returned military personnel. The real battles they face may have only just begun. I pray that their lives do not finish in the same way of Hugo Throssell. Everything must be done to protect their futures and give them a sense of hope. I recommend this book highly.

The Price of Valour
By Steve Knapman
This is a definitive work by John Hamilton that really puts Hugo Throssel's life into perspective. The account of The Neck and Hill 60 shows the Gallipoli campaign for the tragic fiasco that it was. As General Patton wrote in his analysis of the Gallipoli Campaign in the 1930's - if the Allied Armies had had Turkish leadership, they might have won.
The time after Gallipoli is detailed and enlightening. From Hugo's recovery from wounds and meningitis, his meeting Katherine Susannah Prichard and the wild love affair that followed, through to Hugo's tragic suicide, is inspiring and tragic reading.
I think this is very good book and one of the best Australian biography/histories that I have read.

The Price of Valour
By Jennifer Hope Wood
This is a tragic story - a war hero feted on return from the First World War, later neglected and treated shabbily. He publicly denounced war and was greatly influenced by his wife the acclaimed author Katharine Susannah Pritchard, a committed communist. He was unable to find satisfactory work during the Depression. Sadly he took his own life while she was away. The story of the Throssell clan is dear to my heart; he was my great uncle. And the story of his wife and their love story is quite fascinating. John Hamilton has covered the horror of war very graphically as have other writers lauding the bravery of many young men from Western Australia at that time.
