Becky Goldsmith and Linda Jenkins from Piece O' Cake Designs have done it again. In their latest book Applique with Attitude they bring us 10 projects featuring Big, Bold Stitches. Yes, no need to worry about anyone seeing your applique stitches with these projects―the stitching is intended to show! The method of applique used in the book is needle turn. However the big difference here is that you will be stitching the applique pieces down using Perle Cotton thread. The stitches with attitude used in the book are the Running Stitch, Mock Blanket Stitch and Serrated Edge Stitch. There is a comprehensive section on general applique instructions. This covers preparing background, making and using templates, making and using the positioning overlay, trimming the blocks and a special circle applique technique. Instructions are all clearly written and the close-up photos help a lot. Because you are working with larger stitches on the top of your applique piece there are a few steps you will need to take when stitching the outer and inner points. Both of these issues are addressed with the same easy to follow photos and instructions. The bright colored fabrics used throughout and the whimsical patterns make this a delightful read. The dynamic duo behind the Piece O' Cake brand have experimented with a style of applique that is new to them in this collection of 10 projects. Instead of working with matching thread and tiny stitches to make their needleturn applique stitching virtually invisible, they decided to have a go working with large, bold stitches in colours that often contrast with the fabric. The projects they've included are all small - cushions, tea towels, wallhangings―so there's ample opportunity to choose one and give this method a whirl. In addition to a general overview of appliqueing the Piece O' Cake way, there are excellent instructions included on the big, bold approach featuring three different, highly visible stitches: running stitch, a mock blanket stitch and a serrated edge stitch variation. Each is shown in a series of close-up photographs with detailed notes and there's a special section that will help you build skills in appliqueing outer and inner points. Applique with Attitude

This book is the latest of the ladies at Piece `O Cake, as you know, one of my favorite artists. This book takes needle turn appliqué and makes it more fun with on top appliqué stitches. You use the same techniques they have taught for year to prepare fabric for needle turn appliqué then you use pearl cotton thread to do decorative stitches to give attitude to the appliqué. There are so many cute patterns in this book using modern prints making really bold projects. Using their ideas you can really give your appliqué your personal look. The stitches are illustrated very well and easy to follow. All their instructions are easy to follow, just right for the beginner. Long time appliquers will like this book because is gives a twist to your appliqués. The projects in this book are quick and would be very doable for Christmas gifts while enjoying the process. If you are a beginner and afraid of the appliqué word, this technique would be one to try; it doesn't matter how hidden your stitches are because with this technique you want to accent with the stitches!! This is another winner from Piece `O Cake ladies.

Yes, no need to worry about anyone seeing your appliqué stitches with these projects, the stitching is intended to show!
The method of appliqué used in the book is needle turn. However the big difference here is that you will be stitching the appliqué pieces down using Perle Cotton thread. The stitching is done near the edge of the appliqué piece. The stitches with attitude used in the book are the Running Stitch, Mock Blanket Stitch and Serrated Edge Stitch.

Good for beginners

This is a very nice book with patterns for all levels of quilters. Beginners will enjoy the fact there are many ways to use the same applique pieces for different results. It is a bit light on full explanations, but if you use it in conjunction with a class like I did it works out very nicely. Be aware, however, this is a book exclusively for HAND applique. So, if you are looking for something with machine applique this is NOT the book for you.
