New Addresses, by Kenneth Koch

Kenneth Koch, who has already considerably "stretched our ideas of what it is possible to do in poetry" (David Lehman), here takes on the classic poetic device of apostrophe, or direct address. His use of it gives him yet another chance to say things never said before in prose or in verse and, as well, to bring new life to a form in which Donne talked to Death, Shelley to the West Wind, Whitman to the Earth, Pound to his Songs, O'Hara to the Sun at Fire Island.

Koch, in this new book, talks to things important in his life -- to Breath, to World War Two, to Orgasms, to the French Language, to Jewishness, to Psychoanalysis, to Sleep, to his Heart, to Friendship, to High Spirits, to his Twenties, to the Unknown. He makes of all these "new addresses" an exhilarating autobiography of a most surprising and unforeseeable kind.

From Publishers Weekly
"Am I a yes/ to be posed in the face of a negative alternative?/ Or has the sky taken away from me its ultimate guess/ About how probably everything is going to be eventually terrible/ Which is something we knew all along, being modified by a yes." This masterful 16th collection finds Koch, a first-generation New York School poet well-known for long, often comic works ("When the Sun Tries to Go On"; "The Art of Love"), directly addressing a variety of life's trials and tribulations through a series of one- to three-page anthropomorphizing apostrophes. Poems are directed "To WWII," "To Jewishness," "To Psychoanalysis" and to such intangibles as "Duration," "Destiny," "The Unknown" and, as in the above quote, "Yes." The poems based on time spent as an infantryman in the South Pacific are particularly effective, and Koch gives up none of his comic timing for predictable solemnity: "The hornets attacked me, and Lonnie,/ The corporal, said "Soldier get off your ass!"/ Later the same day, I stepped on a booby trap/ That was badly wired. You/ Had been there too./ Thank you. It didn't explode" ("To Carelessness"). Blending nuanced echoes of O'Hara, Stevens and Max Jacob, Koch has managed to create a form and inflection that takes on the variousness of the poet's life with startling movement and without the least bit of decaying bathos, despite the naturally reflective tone of some of the poems (such as "To Old Age"). In fact, the lightness of poems like "To Orgasm" and "To Kidding Around," while disarming, is always backed by forceful directness and sheer sonic delight. Arriving on the heels of Making Your Own Days, a book that sums up many of Koch's ideas about the pleasures of poetry, New Addresses contains some of this ineffable poet's finest work to date. (Apr.)

From Library Journal
"How can I ever say what's in my heart/ While imitating the head butts of a rhinoceros," the prolific Koch asks in "To Kidding Around," one of 50 poems in this new collection. For Koch, one mechanism of getting things said directly seems to be in keeping his poems short (with less space for his trademark antics). Readers who respect Koch's writing but aren't moved by the clown guise have been waiting for a book such as this. Yet Koch's gimmick-prone methodology is still very much in evidence: the "addresses" of the title are literal, the speaker accusing, praising, or querying abstract concepts, emotions, bits of himself, and his past. In short: self-revelation, protected by a somewhat corny "you." At its best, as in "To The Roman Forum," the outward focus becomes a means of handling sentimentality. The resulting poems vary greatly, from the clear emotional buildup of "To My Father's Business" (reminiscent of David Ignatow's early work) or "To Jewishness" to the zany mindlessness of "To Testosterone" or "To Jewishness and China." Recommended for most poetry collections, this is a perfect introduction for new readers.

From the Publisher
A superb achievement in poetic autobiography . . . the forces of celebration gain the upper hand over the forces of despair . . . beautiful and moving."
--The Wall Street Journal

"There is nothing like New Addresses in American poetry. Formal and free, personal and wise, by turns ebullient and melancholy, it suggests an upbeat Leopardi or an American Montaigne. Koch has wedded the virtues of old and new sensibilities into a scintillating, vigorous, surprising. life-giving poetry. It's a great book."
-- Philip Lopate

"New Addresses contains some of this ineffable poet's finest work to date....This masterful 16th collection finds Koch...directly addressing a variety of life's trials and tribulations... Blending nuanced echoes of O'Hara, Stevens and Max Jacob, Koch has managed to create a form and inflection that takes on the variousness of the poet's life with startling movement and without the least bit of decaying bathos."
-- Publishers Weekly (starred review)

"Koch's laid-back rhetoric, conversational idiom and formal looseness tease out, with surprising skill and frequency, wisdom. It's as though the codger next door who spins yarns from his porch swing suddenly started talking like Socrates."
-- Kansas City Star

Vibrant and good humored
By plumnbagel
These poems are so witty and easily read that I almost made the mistake missing their depth or emotional resonance. It is only on the second or third reading of a poem like "To My Twenties" that a phrase like "What you gave me you gave me whole/But as for telling/Me how best to use it/You weren't a genius at that" did I really see the breezyness of that style emulates the ease with which those years in someone's life can fly by. I was moved.

Koch's Best
By A Customer
Easily Koch's best book -- and that is saying a lot.
All the poems here are written as direct address -- the "you" in each poem is an inanimate object, place, thing, or event...allowing the poet to write deeply and freely about the important events in his life. In the end, you realize it is a kind of autobiography.
"New Addresses" is moving, connected, funny, adventurous, experimental, free. It's a huge success. You should read it.

Autobiographical personal poetry appeals
By Shalom Freedman
These poems are addresses to subjects and through them Koch in a sense not only gives us his ideas and attitudes about these subjects but tells his own life -story. I found of particular interest his poem on 'Jewishness' in which he really explains his changing attitude to this element of his identity. The 'poem 'in a sense represents a return to a subject long- neglected. And if it lacks a deeper connection with the religious meanings of Judaism it nonetheless is rich with incidents and perceptions. One of these relates to Koch's experience as a soldier on Leyte where he overhears another soldier say ," Where are the Jews" . Koch does not reply. This small part of the poem moved me. My uncle Larry Zeibert of blessed memory was another Jewish soldier on Leyte. He in fact was in the first Ranger landing boat in the invasion.

Koch's poetry reveals great intelligence, and sensitivity. This is one of those books of poetry one can read and understand and learn from.

A Death in the Small Hours (Charles Lenox Mysteries Book 6), by Charles Finch

From the critically acclaimed author of A Beautiful Blue Death and A Burial at Sea comes an intriguing new mystery in what The New York Times calls "a beguiling series"

Charles Lenox is at the pinnacle of his political career and is a delighted new father. His days of regularly investigating the crimes of Victorian London now some years behind him, he plans a trip to his uncle's estate, Somerset, in the expectation of a few calm weeks to write an important speech. When he arrives in the quiet village of Plumley, however, what greets him is a series of strange vandalisms upon the local shops: broken windows, minor thefts, threatening scrawls.

Only when a far more serious crime is committed does he begin to understand the great stakes of those events, and the complex and sinister mind that is wreaking fear and suspicion in Plumley. Now, with his protege, John Dallington, at his side, the race is on for Lenox to find the culprit before he strikes again. And this time his victim may be someone that Lenox loves.

From Booklist
Charles Lenox, the Victorian-era member of Parliament, doesn’t think he misses his days as London’s premier private investigator. He’s too busy climbing the political ladder, and, anyway, his young protégé, John Dallington, seems to be doing just fine on his own, turning into a first-class detective. But when Lenox accepts an invitation to spend some time at his uncle’s estate in the country, he has to admit it’s not entirely because he needs peace and quiet to work on an upcoming speech: his uncle’s tantalizing hints about a series of bewildering vandalisms in the village of Plumley tug at Charles’ not-so-dormant investigative curiosity (and when vandalism escalates to murder, Lenox is hooked). The latest in Finch’s veddy British mysteries is, like its predecessors, leisurely paced, with ornate Victorian dialogue that often comes oh-so-close to parody (“I find a walk after supper a eupeptic diversion”) and plenty of richly detailed scene-setting description. Sure to please fans of the previous Lenox novels. --David Pitt

Review

“Superb . . . Boasting one of Finch's tightest and trickiest plots, this installment further establishes Lenox as a worthy heir to the aristocratic mantle of Lord Peter Wimsey.” ―Publishers Weekly (starred)

“The murder mystery that Finch weaves keeps readers guessing.” ―Mary Foster, The Associated Press on A Burial at Sea

“Finch vividly brings 1860s London to life [and] effortlessly inhabits his compassionate hero.” ―USA Today on A Stranger in Mayfair

“Beguiling. . . . Character is very much at the core of these whodunits.” ―Marilyn Stasio, New York Times Book Review on The Fleet Street Murders

Sweet, charming addition to a fine series
By Jane Bedinger
If you liked Mr. Pettigrew's last stand....
If you like Anne Perry's Charlotte and Thomas series....
If you are a little sick of hard edge, perfunctory sex and gore... or at least crave a break from it...
Then read Charles Finch.

Some people like to give a taste of the story. I'm not good at that. A nice early Victorian man, sometime detective, marries his best friend (eventually) and solves mysteries. It's the protagonist's love of life that I adore, his appreciation of his nation, his friends and family, and the pleasures of early Victorian life.

I know it's not fashionable, that kind of love. It's like homemade applesauce. But to me it runs like a thread of gold or a beam of light, and makes any story better. Maybe not.

Although this books stands on its own, I recommend downloading the Kindle sample. If you like it, then stop, and start with book one.

Public life, country life & crime in Victorian England
By Patto
In this book, Charles Lenox has put aside his beloved hobby of crime solving for a promising career in Parliament. Chosen for the honor of giving the opening speech in the House of Commons, he retreats with his family to his Uncle's country estate in Somerset to work in peace on the speech.

Happily for readers, there's no peace to be had in this country neighborhood. There have been sinister attacks of vandalism in the village, and eventually a dead body turns up. Charles gets to indulge in amateur detecting, while taking in plenty of country air, working on and off at the speech, and even playing in a village cricket match.

What I love about the Charles Lennox mysteries is the intimate portrayal of family life and social relationships in nineteenth-century England. And the atmosphere of everyday day life -- travel by horse-drawn carriages, gentlemen taking exercise on horseback, gentlemen obsessed with scientific researches, tremendous interest among the gentry in gardens and gardening, and amusing superstitions and wild gossip among villagers.

The plot presents us with some very complex criminal activity, some unexpected romances and a good number of personal dramas. Yet events unfold at a genteel pace, which makes the surprises all the more effective. The reader can also look forward to a startling act of heroics on the part of Lenox, although he's a bit out of shape for heroics.

I do wonder what Lenox will be getting up to next...

A fine addition to the series!
By Sandra
The latest entry to the Charles Lenox series takes the erstwhile investigator out of London to a village outside Bath, where a troubling act of vandalism intrudes on his idyllic holiday.
The incidents escalate until Lenox finds himself investigating a murder.

Finch's book offers a glimpse into the privileged lifestyle of the Victorian gentry as well as an intriguing puzzle. The author includes bits of history and detailed depictions of the era. The cricket match alone is worth the price of the book!

My only criticism is that some of my favorite characters, such as Graham and Dallington, get short shrift this time, partially because of the change of location. Yet the novel offers compensation with the introduction of some new characters who will probably make many appearances in future- at least I hope so!

Love the updates!
By Sheridan Ripley
My Aunt got me a copy of Heart and Hands when I was a teenager (25 years ago) and wanted to be a midwife. I remember pouring over the pages and just being fascinated by what I learned.

I will say it was much different reading it now. I am not a midwife, but have been a doula and childbirth educator for 5 years. So I am immersed in the birthing world, more as an observer/support person than as a care provider. So to read the amazing details and responsibilities a midwife has, it is awe inspiring.

Having the responsibility of knowing all the things that could possibly go wrong and how to help in that situation, makes me glad I am not a midwife. It makes me really appreciate and honor the women who are.

The book covers pretty much everything about preganancy and birth. It is neat to see how it has been update since my version. For instance they talk about Group B Strep in the newest edition and I learned some really great information about Group B Strep that I will pass along to my doula clients.

I love what she shares about VBAC moms and talks about how some VBAC moms may need hypnosis or other therapy to help overcome their fears from their cesarean birth. (Depending on the reasons and if it was traumatic, etc)

This is a must have book for any midwife and I think all doulas and childbirth educators will benefit from reading this book as well. I enjoyed re-reading it 25 years after the first time. I will say that I prefer my cover of the book though. Other than that, great book for a birth lover!

This is one of the best books ever for midwifery! I love it! I was so glad whe it came to the Kindle so I can read it or refer to it anywhere, any time. I am a midwife and sometimes need to look up something when I'm not at home with my book. I wouldn't be without my Heart and Hands book. I am having my apprentices reading and studying it now.

Exceedingly informative for both future moms and aspiring midwives!
By Stephanie Morris
This is an excellent text for the interested mother and/or the aspiring midwife. I fall into the latter category and find the book to be extremely readable and informative. The images in the text as well as the resources found in the appendixes are also relevant and of high-quality. It's no wonder this text warranted a 5th update!

Better Than Sex: Confessions of a Political Junkie (The Gonzo Papers series), by Hunter S. Thompson

"Hunter S. Thompson is to drug-addled, stream-of-consciousness, psycho-political black humor what Forrest Gump is to idiot savants."
--The Philadelphia Inquirer
Since his 1972 trailblazing opus, Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail, Hunter S. Thompson has reported the election story in his truly inimitable, just-short-of-libel style. In Better than Sex, Thompson hits the dusty trail again--without leaving home--yet manages to deliver a mind-bending view of the 1992 presidential campaign--in all of its horror, sacrifice, lust, and dubious glory. Complete with faxes sent to and received by candidate Clinton's top aides, and 100 percent pure gonzo screeds on Richard Nixon, George Bush, and Oliver North, here is the most true-blue campaign tell-all ever penned by man or beast.
"[Thompson] delivers yet another of his trademark cocktail mixes of unbelievable tales and dark observations about the sausage grind that is the U.S. presidential sweepstakes. Packed with egocentric anecdotes, musings and reprints of memos, faxes and scrawled handwritten notes (Memorable."
--Los Angeles Daily News
"What endears Hunter Thompson to anyone who reads him is that he will say what others are afraid to (.[He] is a master at the unlikely but invariably telling line that sums up a political figure (.In a year when all politics is--to much of the public--a tendentious and pompous bore, it is time to read Hunter Thompson."
--Richmond Times-Dispatch
"While Tom Wolfe mastered the technique of being a fly on the wall, Thompson mastered the art of being a fly in the ointment. He made himself a part of every story, made no apologies for it and thus produced far more honest reporting than any crusading member of the Fourth Estate (. Thompson isn't afraid to take the hard medicine, nor is he bashful about dishing it out (.He is still king of beasts, and his apocalyptic prophecies seldom miss their target."
--Tulsa World
"This is a very, very funny book. No one can ever match Thompson in the vitriol department, and virtually nobody escapes his wrath."
--The Flint Journal

Since his 1972 trailblazing opus, Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail, Hunter S. Thompson has reported the election story in his truly inimitable, just-short-of-libel style. In Better Than Sex, Thompson hits the dusty trail again - without leaving home - yet manages to deliver a mind-bending view of the 1992 presidential campaign, in all its horror, sacrifice, lust, and dubious glory. Complete with faxes sent to and received from candidate Clinton's top aides, and 100 percent pure gonzo screeds on Richard Nixon, George Bush, and Oliver North, here is the most true-blue campaign tell-all ever penned by man, beast, or Thompson.

From Booklist
At some point, people as diverse as John Wayne and the members of Aerosmith appeared to achieve a kind of wisdom when they began to parody themselves. There are hints in Better Than Sex that HST is winking--broadly--at us. Sure, he's still a vicious, twisted psychotic thug who can write that Richard Nixon was criminally insane from birth, but he also closes any number of preposterous gonzo screeds with the equally preposterous, "Take my word for it, Bubba. I was there." This is Thompson's take on Clinton's campaign and his first year in office--and it's an outrage per page. Nobody escapes the good doctor's wrath: Bush is so guilty he makes Nixon look innocent; Clinton is a swine, but he's our swine; and Hillary is pilloried. Ross Perot, James Carville, Margaret Thatcher, James Baker III, Al Gore, and even Walter Cronkite also get savaged. Along the way, Thompson ruminates, occasionally quite shrewdly, nearly always hilariously, on politics, society, and, of course, himself. Better Than Sex is not better than Thompson's great Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail or the gonzo bible Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Even so, a new book by Thompson is always an event. Still Gonzo After All These Years...
By Rob Port
Let me start by saying that if you have never read anything by Dr. Thompson before, do not start with this book. Rather, start with some of his earlier material (Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas or one of his many articles for Rolling Stone).
I don't recommend this book to first-time Thompson readers because it is so disjointed that the reader, without knowing Thompson's style, may give up on Thompson before discovering his other great writings.
This is not one of Doc's greatest books, but its entertaining, none the less. Its almost worth it just for the funny pictures/faxes and the vicious jabs thrown at all of the canidates.
I rated this book with four stars because I thoroughly enjoyed the book. I enjoyed it so much because I am a Thompson fan and eat up almost everything he writes. Other people, however, would be better off starting with something written a little bit earlier in Thompson's career.

A fading (dissolving?) talent, but still a talent . . .
By A Customer
Within the context of HST's work this definitely represents the low end. Having read most of his books it is painfully apparent that The Good Doctor wrote this one he was operating somewhere close to the nadir of his creative powers. Which is sad, because HST has chiseled his initials onto that mystic tablet of the cultural subconscious as one of the great voices of the twentieth century. You just wouldn't know it from reading Better Than Sex. When the folks at the end of the next century look back at ours to weed through the one-sided histories, buried testimonies, and hazy lies so they might weigh and measure the "truths" of our time, Thompson's version will be one that rings true.
Sweeping criticisms and grandiose statements aside, if you like Thompson after having read some of his other stuff, especially the political writing, then you will enjoy this book. It is still a fun book to read, its just not at the same level as his good stuff.
There are occasional bright points, notably the picture of HST with James Carville and the bit about HST resembling Bill Clinton's childhood nemesis, Tommy Stukka, which is mercilessly funny (starts around p. 136).
In short: if you are new to Thompson, buy something else (FLLV, Great Shark Hunt, Generation of Swine) ; but, if you familiar with the Good Doctor and his particular brand of journalism, meaning you know what you're getting into when you open up an HST book, then buy this book and read it and for so doing your world will be better, or at least a little less savage.

One of the greatest political books ever written.
By Matty
Ignore anyone who says that Dr. Thompson didn't bring his A-game in to writing this. It is without a doubt one of his best works and also one of the funniest books ever written - every time I read it I find myself at times laughing so hard that I have to set it down for a moment until I can pull it together and continue reading. Obviously this book will appeal more to those of us with an interest in politics but even if you couldn't care less about politics it's still worth a read.

A History of Tasmania, by Henry Reynolds

This captivating work charts the history of Tasmania from the arrival of European maritime expeditions in the late eighteenth century, through to the modern day. By presenting the perspectives of both Indigenous Tasmanians and British settlers, author Henry Reynolds provides an original and engaging exploration of these first fraught encounters. Utilising key themes to bind his narrative, Reynolds explores how geography created a unique economic and migratory history for Tasmania, quite separate from the mainland experience. He offers an astute analysis of the island's economic and demographic reality, by noting that this facilitated the survival of a rich heritage of colonial architecture unique in Australia, and allowed the resident population to foster a powerful web of kinship. Reynolds' remarkable capacity to empathise with the characters of his chronicle makes this a powerful, engaging and moving account of Tasmania's unique position within Australian history.

`Distinctive geography and history have left their stamp on the island and its people.'
By Jennifer Cameron-Smith
This book covers the history of Australia from the European expeditions in the last quarter of the 18th century to Tasmania's bicentenary, which was observed in 2003/2004.
I became one of the Tasmanian diaspora in 1974, when I left the island as a teenager (as so many of us have) to pursue greater opportunities `on the mainland'. My most recent visit reawakened my interest in Tasmanian history, and this is one of the books I picked up as part of that pursuit of information.

The book includes chapters with the following headings:

1. Extraordinary encounters
2. Fledgling settlements
3. The Black War
4. An indelible stain?
5. The triumph of colonization
6. The politics of Van Diemen's Land
7. The convict system
8. Post penal depression
9. Reform and recovery
10. Federation and war
11. Between the wars
12. Post war Tasmania
13. Towards the bicentenary

While I am broadly familiar with Tasmania's history as a penal settlement, of its mineral wealth and its colonial architecture, I was less familiar with some of the factors that had created Tasmania's relatively rapid growth and prosperity before 1850. I was also less aware of some of the demographic differences that shaped politics across the island. I found this book very readable: the way in which Mr Reynolds has organised material makes it easy to follow.

The viewpoints of both Indigenous Tasmanians and British settlers are presented, as are differences in perspective between the landed gentry (mainly those fortunate enough to receive land grants and have access to convict labour) and the workers whose success depended on their own efforts. Patterns of settlement across the island reflect the diversity of the island and its mineral wealth. Tasmania's geography, as much as its isolation have influenced its development.

Walking around Hobart and Launceston, and visiting properties such as `Highfield House' in Stanley and `Woolmers' at Longford illustrate the colonial architecture heritage which is still so rich in Tasmania.

`Tasmania's economic history diverges from the common Australian pattern. The period of rapid growth and prosperity before 1850 was followed by prolonged depression interspersed with short periods of relative abundance. No other state has been so often in depression or experienced such a persistent loss of population.'

I learned quite a lot from reading this book, including the existence of a convict cemetery very close to where I went to primary school at Glen Dhu, Launceston. I drove past the cemetery earlier this year: until then I knew nothing of its existence. I hope that much more local history is taught in Tasmanian schools now. I've added some of the sources cited to my reading list.

Less is more... You can try and learn pharmacology from goodman & gillmans, but the amount of usefull information you will retain is negligible. This book is ideal for covering the essentials in pharmacology and the most commonly used drugs, wich at the end of the day are the important ones to dominate. Its is better to know a few drugs well than lots of drugs half way....

L. Frank Baum’s timeless classic The Wonderful Wizard of Oz was the first uniquely American fairy tale. A combination of enchanting fantasy and piercing social commentary, this remarkable story has entertained and beguiled readers of all ages since it was first published in 1900. Ray Bradbury writes in his Introduction, “Both [Baum and Shakespeare] lived inside their heads with a mind gone wild with wanting, wishing, hoping, shaping, dreaming,” and it is this same hunger that makes all of us continue to seek out the story of Oz—and be nourished by it.
This Modern Library Paperback Classic is set from the text of the definitive first edition and includes the New York Times review of that edition as well as the original Preface by the author.

The Correct Order of all 14 Books in the series !!
By Ellie Tyson
I know you're all wondering, "how does she know the correct order?" Is she over 100yrs old? Well, I know because my grandmother, gone for 34 yrs now, had each and every book bought hot of the presses. Inside each book, except the first, are the previous books in order. Also a couple of the names have changed a bit since they were first written but I have the Books of Wonder titles in this list.
So, here they are in correct order.
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz
The Marvelous Land of Oz
Ozma of Oz
Dorthy and the Wizard in Oz
The Road to Oz
The Emerald City of Oz
The Patchwork Girl of Oz
Tik-Tok of Oz
The Scarecrow of Oz
Rinkitink in Oz
The Lost Princess of Oz
The Tin Woodman of Oz
The Magic of Oz
Glinda of Oz

A true delight for Oz fans!
By Sheila L. Beaumont
This beautiful, oversize, lavishly illustrated Centennial Edition of L. Frank Baum's "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" is a cornucopia of enjoyment for Oz fans. Edited by Oz expert Michael Patrick Hearn, it's annotated in a manner similar to Martin Gardner's "Annotated Alice" (Gardner contributes a preface outlining the history of the "The Annotated Wizard of Oz").
There's a hundred-page introduction, with lots of photos and color illustrations, covering Baum's life, his family, his non-Oz books, and the history of the Oz phenomenon (books, plays, musicals, movies, other Oz authors, and much more).
The story itself is reproduced from the 1900 edition. W.W. Denslow's original illustrations, including all 24 color plates, are here too. Hearn's notes are entertaining, informative and very extensive. For example, there are three double-columned pages dealing with Baum's brief one-page introduction alone!
Anyone who loves the Oz books will find countless hours of pleasure in this delightful book. It's well worth the price!

The ORIGINAL Wizard of Oz is Published
By Sam A. Milazzo
I don't own THIS particular Edition, but I will soon, and as soon as I saw it in Dymmocks, I looked through it and thought "I've really gotta get this book!" And this is why . . . .
I'm sure that there are those of you who have the annotated Wizard of Oz and/or the Dover editions of the Wonderful/Wizard of Oz (Dover has made different copies in publishing it in different ways). the Annotated Wizard of Oz may have the pictures in full-colour, but the colour plates are in 1 whole place, in the middle of the book, and that goes the same for the recent Dover Edition of the Wonderful Wizard of Oz (where Dorothy is wearing a pink dress, talking to her friends, all wearing the Green glasses). The other Dover editions of this story have the pictures in black-and-white (sometimes all, other times, a few of them) with the colour-plates in their own chapter but in black-and-white.
THIS EDITION - the 100th Anniversary Edition - is one everybody should have. It has all the pictures in colour-and-black lined with the FULL-COLOUR-Plates in their OWN PROPER CHAPTER place, e.g. "She caught Toto by the ear" in THE CYCLONE, "I am the Witch of the North" in THE COUNCIL WITH THE MUNCHKINS, etc. It even has the picture of Dorothy and Toto back in Kansas on the very final page on the book in the backboard. And when you pull off this picture-cover (the one that you see now), the actual cardboard-leather-bound cover has the EXACT SAME ORIGINAL Cover Angela Lansbury shows in "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz: The Making of a Movie Classic", where the Cowardly Lion is wearing the Green glasses on the Front cover, Toto is on the spine and the back has the faces of Dorothy, the Scarecrow and (Nick chopper) the Tin Woodman in circles.
An Important Note on this story is that it Is Imaginative But it Is Not DARK as some people say. It is not scary nor is it supposed to be attempted that way in any new adaptation, nor should it always be made similar to MGM with constant references or musical scenes. This is an AMERICAN 1900 Story, it is not English/British like J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter, Tolkien's Hobbit/LofR or C. S. Lewis' Narnia - it is its own place!! Oz is a place where animals can talk, there are strange animals who are not mythical and never appeared in any other legends, wicked people are defeated by simple acts, by it accidentally-non-magical or magical, everybody is friends and the ordinary items of our world can have strong but simple magic.
Now matter how much the MGM Musical is loved, reading this book is worth it, because it explains how many of the events in Oz came to be when Dorothy arrived: how did the Tin Woodman come to be? How did and why do the Winged Monkeys obey the Wicked Witch of the West? What became of the Winkies after the WWWitch's death? Did Lion become the King of Beasts again? Naturally the musical is different from the book, but despite the change of the Kansas beginning/ending, the story is basically the same. this book only offers MORE than the movie did.
Hope you enjoyed my descriptive review. Watch out for my other Oz and Digimon reviews (by Sam A. Milazzo).

Appearances deceive, and it transpires that the victim was an unprepossessing character who may have been chosen simply because of his physical appearance. Happily settled with his new girlfriend, Priest is able to throw himself wholeheartedly into his work. Unfortunately, all is not well in his team of hand-picked detectives, and old enmities begin to surface. Another victim is murdered in even more bizarre circumstances, and Charlie begins to wonder if he himself is a catalyst that motivates the killer. When his suspicions are confirmed he realises that he is embroiled in much more than the hunt for a murderer. And that the case has now become personal.

Review
The story is well-paced and the suspense builds up enough to keep you turning the pages and there is no better recommendation for any book than that.

About the Author
STUART PAWSON had a career as a mining engineer, followed by a spell working for the probation service, before he became a full-time writer. He lives in Fairburn, Yorkshire, and when not hunched over the word processor likes nothing more than tramping across the moors, which often feature in his stories. He is a member of the Murder Squad and the Crime Writers' Association.

A nifty, inventive mystery
By Laurie Fletcher
I really like the writing of Stuart Pawson. My first exposure was Over the Edge and that favorable impression was enhanced by reading Shooting Elvis. Pawson's plotting is inventive, his stories are not routine, and his procedurals are enlightening. But what really sets him apart is his wonderful ability with writing dialogue. Because Pawson writes in the first person, his Acting DCI Charlie Priest, main character of these books and really fun guy, is able to muse aloud to our delight and his. The repartee amongst Priest and his colleagues is especially witty and well done and you can just picture their working relationships. The main plotline in Shooting Elvis is a not-so-amusing series of puzzling murders that are done to order, but their genesis is puzzling and draws Priest and his cronies a little too close to home before the lightbulb goes on. A satisfying sidestory involves Priest and his happy relationship with Sonia, a former world-class runner who has lost her confidence due to an unfortunate injury. The scenes where Priest is helping rebuild Sonia and hopefully building a relationship as well are nicely done.

I intend to seek out more Stuart Pawson - his writing appears to be worth the time and effort.

5 star ***** Hooray for Pawson and Charlie Priest!
By amanda
I've read ALL of Yorkshire-based Stuart Pawson's available stories featuring the amiable Inspector Charlie Priest, the longest serving Detective Inspector in the East Pennine force in the fictional Yorkshire town of Heckley.
This quirky title, which drew me to his books initially, is just one of Pawson's many strengths, and does eventually make sense, as with many more of his unusual and therefore equally memorable titles. Each book is a sheer delight, and a comforting read many times over.
Please note: No Elvis was harmed in the making of this story.
Charlie as usual solves a number of intertwining mysteries through solid police work and an occasionally unorthodox departure from procedure.
The characters seem credible and well drawn, the plots brilliantly devised, disparate threads not seeming to have any relation, but eventually come together because they are handled expertly by a master.
As it says on the tin (in this case, the cover) "If you've not read Pawson before..shame on you !" - mainly because you are, in fact, missing one heck of a treat.
Run, don't walk to obtain a copy now.
You'll be glad you did.
Happy reading.

Where is Elvis?
By L. M. Keefer
Elvis doesn't make his appearance until later in the story. However, he's worth waiting for. A victim, not named Elvis, is murdered, but not shot. Charlie Priest jokes his way through the investigation, amusing us and everyone around him. He's got a new love interest, which is always fun.

The author is very comfortable with Charlie by this book, not that he was ever uncomfortable, and makes Charlie seem like an old friend you wish you had or worked with. This is one of the lighter Charlie Priest mysteries, which I like. I read them mainly to spend some time with Charlie Priest, lots of giggles/guffaws, and for a mind puzzle. A delightful read and onto the next one!

The Sea Devil's Eye
By Damien Bosley
This books was definetly a great end to a great trilogy. The characters in it were so passionate and real. The way Mel Odom developed all the characters througout the trilogy was great. I haven't read a great war book in awhile and this one definetly had it all. The end was a little toned down though, considering that it was supposed to be the big confrontation between antagonist and protagonist, but still it was a great ending. All in all I would highly recommend this book and the rest of the trilogy if your looking for great sea faring adventure!

Excellent ending to a good series
By F. T. Barrett
This book is the culmination of a wonderful series. This may be the best trilogy since "The Dark Elf Trilogy." This book was definitely more action packed than the previous books but all those things that were pestering you finally are revealed, like who has been speaking to Jherek all these years and why, who Iakhovas is, and more. The Taleweaver's tale comes to an end in dramatic fasion, and I am glad that the ending is different than it was in the module because if it was the same then I would have known the ending and that would have spoiled the book.
I found the pace of the book more along the lines of the first, which I liked (the second book was to slow and little was accomplished). The battle scenes were detailed making them easily pictured in your mind.
The best thing aobut this book is the emotion. You feel the pride in Jherek when he regards his paladin friend and the sadness in his love for a young ships mage. Also handled quite well was Jherek's revival, taking down to his lowest possible point, he was revitalized in magnificent fasion. Truthfully and beyond a doubt this is one of the finest Forgotten Realms series ever. You will not regret reading these books.

Not until you see the red of the beasts eye...
By S. Melvin
The conclusion to the series "The Threat from the Sea" was about as epic of a sea battle as you can get from the Forgotten Realms series. The sea beast, the mastermind and driving force behind all the invasions and attacks since the beginning, finally makes his presence known and attempts to dispose of the meddling fools that are interfering with its plans.

Odom does a laudable job wrapping up this series based on the high seas of the Realms. The main characters, who each had "limitations" from book one, have finally grown into their own skin and know what they can bring to the fight. The enemy, realizing that their assault isn't progressing as expected make one last ditch effort to finally see their plan take hold. And in the end, as it is in most hero based fantasy novels, the main characters triumph. Some sacrifices are made along the way - but nothing of such epic proportions comes without cost.

Overall, the series was a great read. While published over 10yrs ago, the story is still entertaining and sheds some amazing detail on a very virgin topic in the Realms - the coastal menace. If you enjoy reading about Forgotten Realms, you will certainly enjoy this excellent trilogy from Mel Odom.
