Based on Patrick White's own experiences in the early 1930s as a jackaroo at Bolaro, near Adaminaby in south-eastern New South Wales, Happy Valley paints a portrait of a community in a desolate landscape. It is a jagged and restless study of small-town and country life.
White was twenty-seven when Happy Valley was published by George C. Harrop in London. This mesmerising first novel gives us a prolonged glimpse of literary genius in the making. It won the Australian Literature Society Gold Medal in 1941, but White did not allow the novel to be republished in English in his lifetime. Its appearance now in the Text Classics series is a major literary event.
Happy Valley is the missing piece in the extraordinary jigsaw of White's work.

Patrick White was born in England in 1912 and taken to Australia, where his father owned a sheep farm, when he was six months old. He was educated in England and served in the RAF before returning to Australia after World War II.
Happy Valley, White’s first novel, is set in a small country town in the Snowy Mountains and is based on his experiences in the early 1930s as a jackaroo at Bolaro, near Adaminaby in south-eastern New South Wales. In Happy Valley White found a more honest ‘lumbering after truth’ than in the plays he had written to date. He said, ‘I began to write from the inside out when Roy de Maistre introduced me to abstract painting’, and he dedicated the novel to the artist.
White went on to publish twelve further novels (one posthumously), three short-story collections and eight plays. His novels include The Aunt’s Story and Voss, which won the inaugural Miles Franklin Literary Award, The Eye of the Storm and The Twyborn Affair.He was the first Australian to win the Nobel Prize for Literature, in 1973, and is considered one of the foremost novelists of the twentieth century.White died in 1990, aged seventy-eight.
Peter Craven is one of Australia’s best-known literary critics. He was a founding editor of Scripsi, Quarterly Essay and the Best of Anthologies. Peter wrote introductions to The Fortunes of Richard Mahony and Happy Valley.

Overblown ... but valuable

Happy Valley was Patrick White's first novel - and it is one for the lovers of his work, I would not recommend it for those who are new to his writing. Patrick White brings to life the glorious feel of an Australian place and takes us on a journey through the intense character development so typical of his later work, but it also has much of that stream of consciousness writing which he explored in his early days - overdone in this book, more effective in his next novel, The Living and the Dead. Happy Valley is a place where "nothing much appeared to happen ... though a lot was really happening all the time." We are presented with an interesting range of everyday characters, most with troubled souls, all interlinked in some sort of an `un-virtuous circle' - perhaps just a fact of life in a small, remote town. The many insertions of stream of consciousness add a sense of dream to the story, but there is too much, leaving the story verging on delirium - an unfortunate distraction which may have contributed to the author's subsequent decision to repress further publication of the book. Still, the book was a Gold Medal winner in 1941, it reflects the times (sadly, including the racism) and it is a worthwhile read for all of us who admire Patrick White's contribution to great literature.

A pleasant surprise

Generally I do not click with Patrick White's writing. This time I read Happy Valley because it is a book that he did not want published in his life time and I was curious to find out why. Within the first 5 pages I was engrossed. The writing was beautiful; the descriptions of the countryside were vivid and took no effort to interpret in my visual mind; the character descriptions were brilliant and related so well with the story line. Happy Valley is not a light easy read but well worth tackling for it deals with a time (1920s I think) in rural Australian history with great clarity. A true classic

And so the quest came to an end

I learned of this book many years ago while skimming through a biography of Patrick White. Happy Valley sounded interesting but there was the problem of White's forbidding its reprinting, apparently because of misgivings over some characterizations. What copies were available were expensive, so I would sometimes prowl used bookstores and thrift shops in the hopes a cheap copy slipped through because the staff didn't know what they had. This did not work. I learned the book was being brought back into print but I wondered if I would like it; a fellow Amazon reviewer said that he would not recommend this to someone new to White's writing (which I was). Then, a few weeks ago, I was going through a catalog and saw a citation for Happy Valley at a great price. I took this as a sign I was to have the book, although I wasn't sure if I would get through it. My worries were groundless; this was a well written work that held my interest through its 400+ pages. His characters, the residents of a small Australian town, were quite intriguing and I was soon caught up in their struggles, their dramas and their trying to make the best of things (not always successfully and in one case, very tragically). It was a long wait to read Happy Valley but it was one of those cases in which the event proved equal to the anticipation.
