About the Author
DON GRAHAM is J. Frank Dobie Regents Professor of American and English Literature at the University of Texas at Austin, where he teaches the famous course “Life and Literature of the Southwest.” Graham has written extensively on Southwestern American literature, film, and history. His books include Cowboys and Cadillacs: How Hollywood Looks at Texas, No Name on the Bullet: A Biography of Audie Murphy, Kings of Texas: The 150-Year Saga of an American Ranching Empire, and State Fare: An Irreverent Guide to Texas Movies. Graham is also a past president of the Texas Institute of Letters and a writer-at-large for Texas Monthly.

Highly Entertaining and Insightful

I never like Texas so much, nor do I feel I understand it so well, as when I read Graham's essays. His criticism pays the highest tribute to realism and is literary in the best sense of the word. Graham is erudite but always in the right amount and at the perfect moment, and so never pedantic or antiquarian. Not only do I feel I learned something about Texas past and present, there are a handful of sentences in each essay that made me laugh out loud. Some are worth memorizing. The essays are masterfully composed, specific and suggestive, but never dragging on, and always leaving you wanting more. I basically consumed the book like I would a delicious steak dinner. If you want my opinion, Graham's style reaches the apogee of the art, and truth be told, I'd give an eye to write like he does.

Great read

Don Graham's essays about Texas writer's and culture are laugh out loud funny, beautifully written, and full of fascinating details. Reading this book is like eating popcorn; once you read the first essay you're not going to be able to stop until you've read them all. And you're going to learn some interesting stuff including the fact that LBJ named one of his body parts, the filming of the movie "The Last Picture Show" in Archer City, Texas was a steamy event, there is a difference between a ranch and a farm, that they named the Dobie Mall at the University of Texas after J. Frank Dobie, and that the lives of other great Texas writers like Cormac McCarthy, Larry McMurtry and others are really interesting when Graham gets ahold of them. This book is a great read and would make a great gift.

Don Graham is one of very few people who can blend great storytelling and great writing to educate us on a subject as imposing as Texas. He has been doing it successfully for decades and it shows.
