Bewitching, captivating, funny -- Annino has done it again!

Tiger's Eye is the third installment of the Stacy Justice Mystery Series by Barbra Annino, and if you've enjoyed the first two (Opal Fire and Bloodstone), you're going to love this one as well.

In Tiger's Eye, Stacy Justice continues to come to terms with her witchy heritage as she confronts the possibility that her father's accidental death was actually murder. A white tiger continues to appear to Stacy, and while she struggles to understand its significance, she must face various other obstacles and challenges from being shot at in a junkyard to a yippy little chihuahua that seems to have her number.

Quite simply, Annino has done it again -- managed to weave together a bewitching, captivating, funny mystery while further developing her quirky characters, both those still around and those MIA in one way or another.

I've said it before, and it still holds true: I just love Annino's writing style and wit. If you haven't been reading this series of books, I highly recommend jumping on the Stacy Justice bandwagon now; Annino is primed to become a major player in the cozy mystery game. I can't wait to read the next one.

Better and better

With unanswered questions about the death of her beloved father, Stacy starts digging into the past. And finds the past and the present intersect. From unwittingly releasing a pack of dogs onto a town festival to an unsettling visit to the local graveyard, she realizes that she has to accept and learn to control powers that she didn't even believe in until recently. While at the same time catching the bad guys - with panache. Stacy is quick witted, smart and a whole lot of fun. I would want Stacy on my side, no matter the situation, whether fighting the bad guys or telling off the town tramp with a fantastic sarcastic wit.

A Delightful Witchy Mystery

In this third sequel (and I do recommend reading the series in order,) I found Stacy Justice, a witch with a wonderful Great Dane, Thor, as her familiar messing up spells, growing as a witch, and fighting for justice once more.

Stacy is a witch who lives in the open. Most of the town of Amethyst, Illinois knows that Stacy's family is 'special.' Stacy earns her living as a journalist following in her father's footsteps.

Stacy finds herself at the annual Founder's Day picnic and mulling over the message she had received about her Father's death (not an accident but a murder,) when her beloved Thor goes missing. Casting a spell quickly, Stacy finds Thor, but also many surprises, such as dead bodies in the lake, Tigers appearing sent from her Mother in Ireland, resurrected and lost dogs, and more...

But, what about her Father? Was he murdered, or was it an accident? Her Father was just a small town newspaperman, what was the reason for him to be murdered...but there was that cell phone call...

This novel has humor, quirky characters, beloved animals, adventure, fast-paced plots, and just plain good story telling. I love how we get a reminder of where the last novel ended as this orientates me back into the story line after a good six or more months while waiting for the book to be published.

I also appreciate the research and study the author has put into this series. Ms. Annino has studied the Irish Celtic mythology and even gives us, the readers, an 'Author's Note' that gives more information to further our own independent study of the same.

Public health primer

Probably one of the first examples of journalistic fiction, Defoe's "A Journal of the Plague Year" is a pseudo-eyewitness account of the London plague of 1665. Writing this in 1722, Defoe casts himself into the role of his uncle whom he calls H.F. and who recounts the events in grisly detail but with magnanimous compassion. Aside from the prose, the book has a surprisingly modern edge in the way it combines facts about a sensationally dire historical event with "human interest" stories for personal appeal. It seems so factual that at times it's easy to forget that it's just a fictitious account of a real event.
The plague (H.F. writes) arrives by way of carriers from the European mainland and spreads quickly through the unsanitary, crowded city despite official preventive measures; the symptoms being black bruises, or "tokens," on the victims' bodies, resulting in fever, delirium, and usually death in a matter of days. The public effects of the plague are readily imaginable: dead-carts, mass burial pits, the stench of corpses not yet collected, enforced quarantines, efforts to escape to the countryside, paranoia and superstitions, quacks selling fake cures, etc. Through all these observations, H.F. remains a calm voice of reason in a city overtaken by panic and bedlam. By the time the plague has passed, purged partly by its own self-limiting behavior and partly by the Great Fire of the following year, the (notoriously inaccurate) Bills of Mortality indicate the total death toll to be about 68,000, but the actual number is probably more like 100,000 -- about a fifth of London's population.
Like Defoe's famous survivalist sketch "Robinson Crusoe," the book's palpable moralism is adequately camouflaged by the conviction of its narrative and the humanity of its narrator, a man who, like Crusoe, trusts God's providence to lead him through the hardships, come what may. What I like about this "Journal" is that its theme is more relevant than its narrow, dated subject matter suggests: levelheadedness in the face of catastrophe and the emergence of a stronger and wiser society.

A stunning blend of fact and imagination.

Defoe has pulled off something brilliant here. Although he was only 5 years old in 1665 (the year of the title), in 1720 he set down a narrative full of rich details blending fact and imagination. The thoroughness of his descriptions and the constant realism come close to convincing you that these are first-hand observations: but these are *not* first hand observations; his narrator is a fiction, recalling events he saw as an adult.
The persuasiveness of Defoe's fiction comes from his specificity, and little comments suggesting the narrator has an additional life outside the Journal. He mentions not only the dead (and the increasing losses), but the quacks taking advantage of the gullible, the quarantining of infected houses, the marks on the doors, the efforts to escape from quarantined houses, the efforts of the mayor's offfice to limit the spread of infection, and the public pits where the bodies were thrown. And so on into the facets of everyday life. Through it all, his portrayal of the narrator also has a personal richness, a consistent first-person perspective; the conceit is reinforced by insertions such as "what I wrote of my private meditations I reserve for private use, and desire it may not be made public on any account whatever." The narrator is a product of Defoe's imagination, of course, and similarly, any private meditations such a narrator would have. But Defoe has cleverly made the narrator real.

So realistic you forget you're reading fiction

Daniel Defoe put a lot of research into his 'Journal of the Plague Year,' yet it doesn't read like a history report. Rather, this is a novel so realistic you can quite literally feel what it must have been like to have lived in London at the time of the plague. The facts as he knew them, both from reading and interviews with those who lived through it, are revealed to us throughout the narrative. You get every detail of the plague, from the symptoms to the hysteria to the steps the government took to help insure the safety of the people. 'Journal of the Plague Year' is a fascinating and imminently readable book.

Useful for knowledge entrepreneurs

If you offer knowledge products or services on the Internet, or plan to do so, you will find this book invaluable for the thoroughness with which it catalogues and explains developments, alternative approaches, and factors to be taken into account in developing a successful operation.
The first chapter gives an overview of aspects of knowledge management in order to 'frame' the main subject of the book, which is how to realize value from knowledge, using the Internet as the medium to deliver or mediate delivery of the value to customers. The last chapter touches on wider issues including the vexed questions of valuation of knowledge and of ownership of knowledge, but does not go into these in any great depth. The rest of the book is concerned with the practicalities of identifying and exploiting the commercial potential in various forms of knowledge held in 'knowledge objects' or by persons.
The aim of the book is to help practitioners 'to build a thriving knowledge business'. Broadly, it works within well-established conceptual principles. Its value lies in the thoroughness of its identification of the various forms of commercial offering, where they can be applied, their strengths and weaknesses and what a seller of knowledge needs to do to be successful.
At first, the book looks indigestible. I nearly put it aside before recognizing the value contained in its rather dense structure. If you contemplate using the Internet to sell knowledge products, it is well worth persisting. The table of contents and index are good enough for the book to be used as a ready reference.

About the Author

Philip Gounev is Senior Analyst and expert on crime and corruption at the Center for the Study of Democracy in Bulgaria. Dr Gounev leads Bulgaria’s annual National Crime Survey. He has managed a number of EU-wide and national studies and projects on organised-crime and corruption. Dr Gounev holds a PhD from the London School of Economics.

Vincenzo Ruggiero is Professor of Sociology at Middlesex University in London. He has conducted research on behalf of many national and international bodies, including the Home Office, the ESRC, the European Commission and the United Nations. He has published extensively in a variety of criminological and sociological areas, and his previous books include: Organised and Corporate Crime in Europe (1996); The New European Criminology (1998, co-edited); Crime and Markets (2000); Economic and Financial Crime (2002, co-edited); Crime in Literature (2003); Understanding Political Violence (2006); Social Movements: A Reader (2008, co-edited) and Penal Abolitionism (2010).

Timely and thorough

The issue of corruption is always `timely'. It may be that in a global financial crisis the consequences of corrupt practices have even greater impact. The authors focus on the connection between corruption and organized crime, especially how these two concepts interact in a market place. Organized criminals need security to ensure stable operations, and the public officials can provide that security through corrupt practices. I do a great deal of research into corruption and organized crime but I still learnt an enormous amount from this book. Any researchers in this area from the English speaking world will benefit from reading this book as about half of their references come from non-English speaking sources; thus this is an opportunity to see data and theories that you otherwise would not have the chance to read in English. Extraordinary Work!

Darwin's Pharmacy is an extraordinary book, which is simply overflowing with exciting new ideas about the co-evolution of psychedelic plants, the human mind, and the planet.

Penn State English professor Richard Doyle's book is a mind-stretching achievement, that views the literature on psychedelic drugs and plants through the eyes of evolutionary theory, and how our interaction with these mind-altering plants effects their selection in evolution, and ours, by symbiotically increasing one another's reproductive success.

Doyle synergistically combines a Darwinian perspective with what is known about psychedelic states of consciousness, and fruitfully builds upon the work of great thinkers and pioneers in the field of psychedelic research--such as Aldous Huxley, Terence McKenna, Timothy Leary, John Lilly, and Rick Strassman--taking us into whole new realms of thought.

Doyle's primary thesis is that psychedelic plants and human beings have been influencing one another's evolution over time, often in surprising ways. With their mind-amplifying powers, psychedelic plants seduce us into interacting with them. We help to propagate them, and they intensify "a crucial component of sexual selection in humans: discourse." That is, they give us a lot to talk about, and, according to Doyle, psychedelic plants are also helping us to engage our minds with the "noosphere," what the late French paleontologist Teilhard de Chardin called the thinking layer of our planet.

So many novel and thought-provoking ideas are playfully explored and masterfully blended in this unique volume, that I can barely summarize them here. There are fascinating sections in Doyle's book about the relationship between discoveries in genetics and LSD, the evolution of rhetoric, and how the human mind can communicate with DNA, as well as thoughts on DMT and alien encounters, cannabis pornography, ayahuasca and plant intelligence, and the philosophy behind Philip K. Dick's science fiction and William Burroughs' novels.

This amazing book is simply bursting at the seams with outrageous, unorthodox ideas and new insights. It is overflowing with mind-blowing revelations, but it is also a demanding book to read. A lot of this cognition-packed volume is densely written, and the ideas in it can seem more than a bit complex at times. So reading this ambitious book requires a strong focus and good concentration--but the huge rewards that can be gained are most definitely worth it!

I highly recommend this wonderful book to anyone interested in how psychedelics might be influencing our future evolutionary development.

An exploration of entheogens and evolution

This is is an intriguing book that explores the rhetoric of entheogens and how people discuss the experiences they've had with entheogens. The author interweaves his own narrative and experiences with the analysis he provides about entheogens. If you are interested in entheogens this book will be a good read that provides you some fascinating insights into the subculture around them. The author also bases a lot of his discussion around the works of Timothy Leary, Robert Anton Wilson, the McKenna brothers and other luminaries that have discussed entheogens in their own work. What I found particularly fascinating was the connected he made to Darwin's Theory of evolution and how work with the plants is a symbiotic relationship of evolution for both humans and plants.

I loved this book

I loved this book. It's rare to find literature in this genre that speaks so intelligently & poetically on such an essential, emerging topic-- and I sincerely enjoyed this author's ideas & writing the whole way through.

I found the passages on linguistics (as well as 'sound/icaro as guide') especially poignant. As was everything he had to say about perception and skepticism. I'm going to remind myself to share this idea from the book next time I am challenged: in the search for truth, it's not always most efficacious to be skeptical of the experiences, but rather of our limited framework of interpretation.

The fact that you are in academia also gives me hope on a personal level because I am a young professor-in-residence/life coach/psychonaut teaching in the Honors College at University of Nevada, Las Vegas, but often wonder if I will (be able to) stay in an academic environment long... seeing how with each journey I take, I find it harder and harder to hide myself in my purest form, and I fear that form is not scholarly-friendly! (i.e. I recently wrote a blog about a "mystical" experience... some of my students stumbled upon it and enjoyed it, however, I'm not so sure the Dean would.)

Anyway, you are fantastic, and thank you again for such a great collection of thoughts and realities.

A Wonder Throwback

I bought this book so my son and I can go through the course. I want him to learn pride in his work, attention to detail, and physical dexterity, and I this seems like a good framework in which to develop it. The book is not comprehensive and more study will be required, by like I said, this seems to be a really good framework.

NOT BAD FOR AN OLD GUY deux

Excellent book BUT
The pages are reproduced from the University of California at Santa Barbara library copy of the text (1892), no handwritten notes in the margins like The Theory of Educational Sloyd.
The paper is high quality, the camera work on the page copies is pretty good and readable the reproduction on some of the original drawings fade out a little but over all the lithography printing is good. It is considered a reproduction of an artifact. One of the last pages has the due date for return, one is in 1957 and the next one is in 1959

Splash 13, Alternative Approaches: The Best of Watercolor

I own all the Splash books. Number 13 is the latest. As a water-media artist it is nice to see a compiled book of what is out there by known artists and some I have never heard of, but are still good. When I become aware of a new artist--to me--it is fun to go back into the Splash series and find what that artist has done in the past. Styles change with some of them which is interesting. It is also nice to have in my Library to occasionally just look at the books in a quiet moment. Each time I take the time I see something I had not seen the time before. I will buy these books as long as they make them. I like it because of the art work, but the book itself is good quality with beautiful colored copies of the artwork. The Splash series is very well done. Rachel Wolf does a good job in the books she produces. Her other books are good as well.

Another Installment in Splash series

I enjoy the Splash series of watercolor books. Each volume showcases different artists. Some artists have repeat performances in the various volumes, but there are also new artist that are showcased.

A variety of watercolor styles are presented. I find these books an excellent resource to study other artists and for inspiration.
