Will Daniels has fought hard to keep his demons at bay; he’s exchanged a shady past for the love of a woman he doesn’t deserve and the dream of becoming an author, all while trying to save his wayward son, Alex, from the same destructive impulses that nearly doomed him.
But the demons come cackling back in the form of a detective on Will’s doorstep, bearing the news that Alex has been killed in a botched bank robbery. Worse, Alex wasn’t an innocent bystander but part of the gang that raided the vault and left behind numerous bodies.
Simmering with rage over his loss, Will tries to let the police handle the matter. But as Alex’s killers remain at large, Will decides that it’s up to him—and a few old friends—to enact revenge in a most brutal manner.
Now he’s calling on dangerous connections that have been buried for years—and should’ve stayed that way. But Will vows to do whatever it takes to see Alex’s killers repay their sins in blood, even if it means his own damnation.

From Publishers Weekly
A devastating personal loss sends writer Will Daniels on a bloody quest for revenge in Davis’s third novel, a solid crime thriller. Daniels’s wayward son, Alex, while participating in the robbery of a Lake Michigan Credit Union, guns down a loan officer he suspects of reaching for his own weapon. But after the gang escapes unscathed, one of Alex’s fellow thieves blows Alex away. The news reaches Daniels three days later, with the tragedy of the death only compounded by the circumstances. In the course of the bank heist, four innocents were killed, including the parents of a little girl, who herself was shot in the head and lies at death’s door. Naturally, Daniels is plagued by guilt over failing his child, and he’s unconvinced that the police will exert much effort to find Alex’s killer. Davis (Nickel Plated) makes the path Daniels follows a grimly plausible one, and tosses in a couple of curves to spice up the plot. (Jan.)
From Library Journal
When Will Daniels’s estranged and ne’er-do-well son is murdered by a fellow gang member during a bank robbery in Grand Rapids, MI, Will feels compelled to seek vengeance as well as answers. A bartender-turned-novelist, he and his older brother ran with a rough crowd in their youth. They turn to a hard man from that past for help and quickly find themselves enmeshed in violence and murderous danger from some very bad gangbangers. Feeling the police cannot help, Will and his brother take matters into their own not always competent hands.
Verdict Davis, a former body piercer in Grand Rapids, explores the barely restrained violence that lurks in many of us as he did in two earlier novels (Nickel Plated and From Ashes Rise). The rough style and R-rated language sometimes grate, but the action-packed plot hurdles along without pause. The protagonists are ordinary people caught in extraordinary circumstances who come to realize that achieving justice is neither easy nor clear. Readers who appreciate pulp fiction will find Davis an author to watch.
From Booklist
When his estranged son is killed while participating in a bank robbery, Will Daniels determines to find out who’s responsible, no matter the danger to himself. The book’s title is apt. This is a rough story about rough men doing rough things. Daniels, who’s managed to put his own dark past behind him (he’s building a career as a novelist), is a well-designed character, a guy we can believe would risk everything good in his life to find his son’s killer. Will’s brother, Isaac, plays the voice-of-conscience role, gently asking Will if he’s sure he wants to go down this bleak road but finally becoming a reluctant partner in Will’s quest for revenge, a quest that leads the two men to an old friend, a career criminal looking for his own kind of redemption. Given its relatively brief length, the book has surprising depth. It’s not just wall-to-wall violence, although there’s plenty of that along the way. Will’s journey takes him into a black place and out the other side, and it’s a journey readers will follow intently.

Short and satisfying novel of revenge
By Craig
The book starts off with a bang, almost literally, with the execution of a bank robber by one of his cohorts. And from that violent beginning, we get more violence, followed by some more, and then the book ends. And what makes this a worthwhile read is that while it's far from the deepest book anyone is likely to pick up this year, the novel delivers exactly what it promises.
The story is essentially one of revenge. When his son Alex is killed, Will Daniels enlists some help and goes out to hunt down those who brought harm to his family. Davis does a good job of providing some depth to Will, so that he's more than a stock character. The action is fast and furious, the writing is spare, and the emotion is kept to a minimum. The characters don't suddenly become best of friends, and they don't magically overcome all their faults. Instead, they seem like relatively normal people putting themselves in a tough situation to get the vengeance they seek.
For someone looking for a quick, action-packed read, this is a good choice. Amazon also has this set at an excellent price, even for a shorter novel.

Rough Read
By Billz
This is the kind of book that I'd take with me for a cross-country flight--an airplane book, so to speak. It's an adventure, no great thinking required, and good guys and bad guys. The problem with the book is its loose ends and one deus ex machina after another to resolve situations. The basic premise is that a father (who wasn't such a hot father to begin with) finds that his son Alex has been involved in an armed robbery, has killed one of the bank workers and is killed himself by the bank robbers. Several other people in the bank were killed as well for no apparent reason. So, when the father learns of this he concludes that the police aren't going to do anything about it so he's going track down the killers who murdered his son. This is where the logic left the tracks for me. A bank robbery with multiple deaths is going to be thoroughly investigated, and there's a very good chance that the FBI will get involved as well. Further, if a son of mine were involved in a bank robbery and killed someone and then was killed himself, it would be difficult to be high and mighty about revenge. I'd want to beg forgiveness from the family of the father my son killed, and chalk up my son's death to Karma. Sure I'd like to see my son's killers brought to justice, but squaring his own act of killing would be more difficult.
Getting past the motive for the search for the killer(s) the author, Aric Davis, puts together a romping adventure. The hero, Will Daniels, enlists the help of his brother Isaac and a former partner in crime named Jason--a true tough guy who runs a tattoo pallor. Through Jason's contacts, they go after the bank robbery gang and run into heaps of problems along the way. The big question is why did the robbers kill Alex? It turns out to be an interesting problem to unravel and fuels the adventure. The character development is a bit thin with the exception of Will's oddball attorney, Lou, who's phone behavior sounds more like a prankster nerd than a member of the Bar.
The book has a number of twists and turns to surprise, and if you're willing to suspend disbelief and let the loose ends flutter off the pages like burnt edges, this read is a short, entertaining distraction.

Great "R" rated novel
By Jim Z
Man , this would make a great "R" rated movie! Graphically violent and filled with mystery and suspense , one can see this "movie-in-the -mind" develop with each page.
An author's son is murdered , and the lead character will stop at nothing until resolved.
Very descriptive and thought-provoking details made by the writer , has the reader turning page after page , not wanting to put it down for even a second.
