The Road Not Taken: How Britain Narrowly Missed a Revolution, 1381-1926, by Frank McLynn

Britain has not been successfully invaded since 1066; nor, in nearly 1,000 years has it known a true revolution – one that brings radical, systemic and enduring change. The contrast with Britain’s European neighbours, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Greece, Russia, is dramatic – all have been convulsed by external warfare, revolution and civil war and experienced fundamental change to their ruling elites or social and economic structures.

Frank McLynn takes seven occasions when Britain came closest to revolution: the Peasants’ Revolt of 1381; the Jack Cade rebellion of 1450; the Pilgrimage of Grace in 1536; the English Civil Wars of the 1640s; the Jacobite Rising of 1745-6; the Chartist Movement of 1838-48; and the General Strike of 1926. Why, at these dramatic turning points, did history finally fail to turn? McLynn examines Britain’s history and themes of social, religious and political change to explain why social turbulence stopped short of revolution on so many occasions.

well written, lucid, stimulating
By Tony Williams
This is a well written and lucid account of English (mostly) history over the last 8 centuries focusing on intra country conflict.

The author has clear opinions on these events, and these opinions neatly provide a compelling narrative through the episodes.

By definition, the episodes didn't result in large changes in English society at the time, but did have subsequent beneficial effects on English society (greater pluralism for example, which is a beneficial effect if one is dispossessed in the first place, but probably not so beneficial if you were in the elite group at that time).

The writing itself, while clear and well constructed, does not 'dumb down'.

Brilliant, as always with Frank McLynn
By Jennifer Anne McCracken
I read everything Frank McLynn writes. He never disappoints. This book covers 1381 to 1926. Although the Peasants Revokt, the Jacobite Rebellion and other revolts are well-known, McLynn brings his considerable knowledge, his deep research and marvellous writing to bear on these subjects so that theyvarevseenvafresh. I thought the coverage of the General Strike was the best I have encountered, I understood it better from this account than from any longer accounts. Do read this book, even if you think you are very familiar with the various revolts, or " not" revolts!
