Augustus, by Karl Galinsky

Augustus, Rome's first emperor, is one of the great figures of world history and one of the most fascinating. In this lively and concise biography Karl Galinsky examines Augustus' life from childhood to deification. He chronicles the mosaic of vicissitudes, challenges, setbacks and successes that shaped Augustus' life, both public and private. How did he use his power? How did he manage to keep re-inventing himself? What kind of man was he? A transformative leader, Augustus engineered profound change in Rome and throughout the Mediterranean world. No one would have expected such vast achievements from the frail and little-known eighteen-year-old who became Caesar's heir amid turmoil and crisis. A mere thirteen years later, after defeating Antony and Cleopatra, he had, in his words, 'power over all things'.

Review
"Drawing on a lifetime's research, Galinsky has produced a magisterial summation of Augustus's life, combining precision and clarity with the readability of a best-selling biography." - Carin Green, Professor and Chair of Classics, University of Iowa

"Galinsky's study is the best succinct introduction to the age of Augustus in English. His insightful synthesis of the whole range of evidence (prose and verse texts, monuments, coins, and objects of art) provides an excellent account of Augustus's personal story within the larger context of the political and social conditions of his day." - Harriet I. Flower, Professor of Classics, Princeton University

"Galinsky's mastery of the material is on display on every page of this new biography of Augustus. Generously illustrated and enhanced by many tools to help the beginner, this will surely become the standard introduction to the life and times of Rome's first emperor." - Carlos Noreña, Associate Professor of History, University of California, Berkeley

"Of all the great men of the ancient world, Augustus is the most elusive. Doing equal justice to his ruthlessness and his statesmanship is a difficult task, but Karl Galinsky manages it with clarity, sympathy, and good sense. Learned but readable, this portrait of the first of the Roman emperors is a brilliant achievement." - T. P. Wiseman, Emeritus Professor of Classics and Ancient History, University of Exeter

"...handsomely produced... this is an excellent book, packed with information. Galinsky has done it again, offering a superbly useful volume for a new generation of readers hungering for knowledge about the Augustan milieu and the life of Augustus." --Classical Journal Online

"...not only a more rounded picture of Augustus in his milieu, but a good introduction to Roman civilization, made all the more effective because it focuses on a single fascinating personality and a single period of momentous change. The bibliography is judicious and up to date, and the text well-edited and attractively presented. In its undogmatic willingness to canvass other views, and its readable and at times humorous style, it is ideal for college and university courses, and a model of how to combine political and cultural history for a contemporary audience." --BMCR

"..Galinsky's narrative focuses more on Augustus himself, his visions and his actions, good and bad, his motivations for them, and their results."
-- R. I. Curtis, Choice

Fascinating, Factual, and FANTASTIC!
By Lindsay Kay
In addition to Schiff's Cleopatra and Freeman's Julius Caesar, I will happily add Galinsky's Augustus to my list of recommended Ancient Rome reads. The biography is an interesting tale of a sickly small town boy thrown into a political mess who rises to the occasion, with the drama and flair of ancient life, naturally. I was impressed by the amount of primary source references, quotes, and pictures, which assisted in my visualization of this 2050 year old man. Most importantly, this biography transforms Augustus the statue to Augustus the living human being, a mark of an excellent biographer. Galinsky has created a wonderful read for Ancient Rome expert and enthusiast alike.

The totally accessible Augustus
By Douglas Boin
Sometimes, people who work on ancient history forget that everyone else does not -- and some of the most fascinating looks at the past fall through the cracks because the subject remains dauntingly incomprehensible, pitched to insiders. Ever wonder how, why and when the empire of Rome became the Roman Empire? Or who helped bring it there, who helped and when? Well, Augustus is the figure who stands at the crossroads of 1 BCE/1 CE (a centrally important date, all things considered) and Galinsky's book brings that time in the Roman world back to life through this succinct biography. Working with the ease of someone who knows the material inside and out, Galinsky has given a wider audience an immensely readable book about a key figure in Rome's history who might even have some lasting lessons for today.

An Immensely Readable Introduction
By Eric Orlin
Galinsky's book is a terrific introduction to the personality of the first Roman emperor. The book is incredibly readable - the author sprinkles humor and references to the modern world throughout his text to make Augustus come alive. From the very first chapter, where we get to know more about Augustus' upbringing than many would think possible, the reader is introduced to Augustus as a person, not merely as a figurehead who transformed Rome into an empire. The text boxes are a terrific addition, with little tidbits about Augustus' horoscope or witty exchanges between the emperor's teenaged granddaughter and her mother. The text is easy to read, but never simplifies - Galinsky always recognizes how challenging the topic is and how many controversies there are, and yet never lets the book get bogged down in these controversies, but provides his readers with a clear and sensible narrative. If you are interested in the ancient Romans, this book is a must read!

Pull Yourself Together, by Thomas Glavinic

“If you’re feeling happy, just wait. There’s bound to be a downside.”

These are just a few of the words Charlie Colostrum lives by, and he’s seen enough downsides to know what he’s talking about (losing his virginity the same day as the Challenger disaster really sets the tone).

A fat slacker with bad skin, Charlie carefully crafts his image, sometimes draping a black cloak over his shoulders and donning a black hat (though he knows smoking a pipe would be overdoing it). He nonchalantly leaves a few books by Nietzsche on the table when friends drop by (though he prefers to read self-help manuals). The jobless, self-proclaimed wimp lives off the kindness—and financial contributions—of his family and spends his time compiling lists of personal rules, daydreaming about becoming a rock star, and scheming his way into bed with as many women as possible (though he’s unable to emotionally connect with anyone).

This satire from one of Austria’s most celebrated contemporary novelists shows that life may not be exactly what you dreamed, but you’ve just got to keep on stumbling.

From Booklist
Charlie, the protagonist of Austrian Glavinic’s satirical bildungsroman, is an overweight, self-absorbed young slacker whose nonchalant attitude can’t quite hide his loneliness. Guided by rock lyrics and self-help bromides, he bums cash from elderly relatives and gropes his way through adolescence, losing his virginity as the space shuttle Challenger explodes in the sky. Eventually, he stumbles his way into casual political activism, a career as a taxi driver, and unintentional celebrity. Along the way, he accidentally kills a few people. Although Charlie’s vulnerability and wit lend him a certain charisma, and his adolescent sexual clumsiness is familiar and even endearing at times, Glavinic’s apparent attempt to use Charlie’s trajectory as a vehicle for social commentary is somewhat less successful. It’s possible that something was lost in translation, or perhaps our listless and marginally reliable narrator just isn’t as much fun as an adult driving a taxi as he was when he was a teenager getting drunk and answering personal ads to meet swingers. Despite a few rough spots, Glavinic’s talent shines through, and Charlie’s voice will resonate with many readers. --Brendan Driscoll

A wimpy, pimply, fatty finds his way
By K. Sullivan
Karl Kolostrum is a chubby Austrian teenager with a bad complexion and a penchant for reading various lifestyle guides. According to a personality test, he's 87% wimp, 82% conformist, 10% shoulder-shrugger, and 3% adventurer. He also has a habit of singing to himself (or as others are wont to describe it: caterwauling or whimpering). Perhaps contrary to expectations, he's moderately successful with the fairer sex if only because he doesn't set his sights too high. He scores with the true beauties only in his very active imagination where he's either a rock star or a Good Samaritan who springs into action saving the day and the damsel in distress. "Pull Yourself Together" follows Karl as he drifts aimlessly through his teens, 20's, and into his 30's. The reader becomes acquainted with his eccentric family, friends, and romantic partners while Karl tries to find his way in life as he leaves high school, enters university, and beyond.

Frequently appearing throughout the narrative are italicized "notes to self" revealing some realization Karl has happened upon in the moment. These notes are often humorous ("If your caressing hand slips off and inadvertently lands between the girl's legs, panic is inappropriate.") and occasionally poignant ("Pursuing an objective is hard if you don't know what it is."). Karl's a bit of a pathetic figure, but he's sympathetic. Despite serious flaws such as being unable to commit in relationships and being an 87% wimp and all that entails, he generally means well. If he's pushed around and incapable of sticking to his resolutions, at least his 3% adventurer wins out on occasion.

Parts of Karl's story may be a little difficult for the average American reader to relate to (this novel was originally published in Austria in 2010 and some of his experiences are uniquely European), but his struggles with love and purpose in life are universal. The ups and downs he experiences as his romances blossom and then grow stale, or as he becomes dissatisfied with his existence and yearns for something more, are shared by all.

Despite the novel's modest length (less than 240 pages), it dragged a little at times. Additionally, I was disappointed by the abrupt ending which, surprisingly, lacked emotional resonance. But despite these deficiencies, Karl's story was an entertaining one featuring an enjoyable mix of humor (occasionally the dark variety and a few scenes are positively outlandish - heaven forbid you ever choke if Karl's the only help available) and depth.

NOTE TO SELF: You finally found that book you were looking for, the one that matches your movie tastes.
By DelusionalAngel
Not even kidding when I say this will more than likely be my favorite book of the year for the reason listed in the title of my review. I keep asking people who I know read a lot if they know of books / authors in the style of movies like I Heart Huckabees, Wes Anderson movies, etc. (basically in a generic sense your run of the mill "Indie" flawed character / character driven kinds of stories). The answer I always get is they know those movies and what I am looking for and while they cannot think of any books remotely close that feel, I'd surely like *insert an author here*. Well ha, this book proves those types of stories not only get told in book format, but get told just as well as they do in the movies.

Like those movies, this book won't be for everyone. It's the story of Charlie - overweight (something he dwells on but has no real interest in working on), no skills, no ideas about what wants from life beyond girls. We follow Charlie through his teens into early adulthood. There's sex, drugs, rock and roll. Friends and family. Death. Fame. From extremely dysfunctional to eh almost thinking things through in a sane adult mature kinda of way. From real to a pretenious jerk trying way too hard, We see all sides of Charlie.

The problem with a story like this is whether you're saying please, no don't let these people exist or yes, please where are these crazy people -- well some of their craziest and most tame moments both are a little too "It would never happen that way". So yes, even in a fictional story, that will put some people off. Still, as I said this kind of story is something I love, so I didn't mind at all.

I am a little conflicted
By Gracie
This is a book written by a very clever and competent writer, Thomas Glavinc. Unfortunately he is too clever by half and ends up dedicating the book to a gimmick that just doesn't work- 2nd person narration. Our unhero, Charlie, is unpleasant enough. He is unattractive on the outside, and a far sight worse on the inside. For some reason it is extra galling to have him use 2nd person. It gives his nonsense a gravitas that is completely unwarranted. The writing is stilted and halting. I am assuming that is due to issues with translation. Maybe it's Charlie's authentic voice. Who knows. Overall, this is a gimmicky book about a loser who has bad things happen to him (accidental murder anyone?). But Charlie is such a loathsome irritating twit, that I was perfectly satisfied when things went badly for him.

The writer is very clever and competent. I just don't think this books works. A loathsome anti hero is one thing. An obnoxious POV is another. But together, they make for a very missable book.

What is Criminology?, by Mary Bosworth, Carolyn Hoyle

Criminology is a booming discipline, yet one which can appear divided and fractious. In this rich and diverse collection of essays, some of the world's leading criminologists respond to a series of questions designed to investigate the state, impact, and future challenges of the discipline: What is criminology for? What is the impact of criminology? How should criminology be done? What are the key issues and debates in criminology today? What challenges does the
discipline of criminology face? How has criminology as a discipline changed over the last few decades?

The resulting essays identify a series of intellectual, methodological, and ideological borders. Borders, in criminology as elsewhere, are policed, yet they are also frequently transgressed; criminologists can and do move across them to plunder, admire, or learn from other regions. While some boundaries may be more difficult or dangerous to cross than others it is rare to find an entirely secluded locale or community.

In traversing ideological, political, geographical, and disciplinary borders, criminologists bring training, tools, and concepts, as well as key texts to share with foreigners. From such exchanges, over time, borders may break down, shift, or spring up, enriching those who take the journey and those who are visited. It is, in other words, in criminology's capacity for and commitment to reflexivity, on which the strength of the field depends.

"In response to the question posed in the title, the contributors offer a wide variety of answers, of visions and conceptions of criminology, of ways of doing criminology and of ways of mapping its field of inquiry."
--Russell Hogg, British Journal of Criminology

"Over 36 chapters Bosworth and Hoyle's collection provides unsurpassed insight into the rocky, but nonetheless exciting, terrain to be negotiated in being a criminologist. It is essential reading for those already negotiating (and perhaps lost on) that terrain, and must surely become both a comprehensive and challenging resource for the orientation of newcomers."

Short Historical Overview In the 1940s, two phenomena in the ?eld of cosmic rays (CR) forced scientists to think that the Sun is a powerful source of high-energy particles. One of these was discovered because of the daily solar variation of CR, which the maximum number of CR observed near noon (referring to the existence of continuous ?ux of CR from the direction of the Sun); this became the experimental basis of the theory that CR’s ´ originate from the Sun (or, for that matter, from within the solar system) (Alfven 1954). The second phenomenon was discovered when large ?uxes of high energy particles were detected from several solar ?ares, or solar CR. These are the - called ground level events (GLE), and were ?rst observed by ionization chambers shielded by 10 cm Pb (and detected mainly from the secondary muon-component CR that they caused) during the events of the 28th of February 1942, the 7th of March 1942, the 25th of July 1946, and the 19th of November 1949. The biggest such event was detected on the 23rd of February 1956 (see the detailed description in Chapters X and XI of Dorman, M1957). The ?rst phenomenon was investigated in detail in Dorman (M1957), by ?rst correcting experimental data on muon temperature effects and then by using coupling functions to determine the change in particle energy caused by the solar-diurnal CR variation.

Review

From the reviews:

“This book represents an exhausting monograph on solar neutrons written by an expert who worked about these particles from the Sun since 1965. … The table of contents is a very detailed one, it covers 24 printed pages. … Many observations are given in tables and figures, the corresponding theoretical developments are given in many formulas, and subject index and reference list are carefully developed.” (Hans-Jürgen Schmidt, Zentralblatt MATH, Vol. 1196, 2010)

From the Back Cover

This book presents the first comprehensive compilation and review of the extensive body of experimental and theoretical material on solar neutrons and related phenomena published in the scientific literature over the last sixty years. Phenomena related to solar neutrons are more specifically:

  • the decay products of solar neutrons
  • solar gamma rays generated in processes like nuclear reactions between solar energetic charged particles and matter of the solar atmosphere, as well as by the capture of solar neutrons by hydrogen atoms in the solar atmosphere
  • the propagation of solar neutrons, solar gamma rays and other secondary particles through the solar photosphere, chromosphere and corona, as well as through interplanetary space and through the Earth's atmosphere.

Models and simulations of particle acceleration, interactions, and propagation processes show that observations of solar neutrons and gamma rays in space and in the Earth's atmosphere yield essential and unique information on the source function of energetic solar particles, as well as on the chemical composition and density distribution of plasma in the solar atmosphere. The results described in the book may also be useful for astrophysical studies of other stars and different astrophysical objects, as well as for space weather problems.

The book will serve as a reference work for researchers and students in solar physics, plasma, neutron, and gamma ray physics, as well as in cosmic ray physics, space science, geophysics and those researching space weather problems.

A good reference book for advertising writers
By Arnold Howard
This is not a how-to book to read from cover to cover. It is a reference book for writing slogans, headlines, or news releases.

It contains lists of idioms, cliches, metaphors, similes, euphemisms, rhyming words, famous quotations, and notable events in world history. It also includes lists of different types of slogans and the basics of writing brochures, ads, and news releases.

If you make your living as a copywriter, you will be glad to own this book.

Uneven and not as useful as it seems
By Thomas L.
A hodgepodge collection of idioms, clichés, quotes, and factoids -- over 700 pages' worth. The problem is, much of the material is tired, obvious, UK-centric, cutesy, hackneyed, and not worth using.

I was looking for a book that would give me some ideas to help my writing sparkle with wit, energy, freshness, and clarity. Heck, a book that helped me in just one of those areas would be a good find.

But this isn't that book. Gabay's is littered with clumsy, dull writing ideas that often made me wince.

If I used the book as a guide, my writing would end up as tired as a tombstone. (Yes, that simile is an actual example from the book. Talk about a stink bomb; there are more, but it's the only one I can force myself to type.)

The page count misled me to think that this would be a comprehensive writing reference brimming with great ideas. The reality: ehhh, not so much.

If you got rid of the dreck in this book, and kept the smattering of good ideas that are scattered throughout, you'd end up with a much thinner book -- but a much more useful one. And that would be a real gem.

Vague, advertisement for a consulting service....
By A Customer
My company decided to adopt PACE, and plopped this book down in front of all the engineers. It caused more chaos than we had when we started. The book describes several teams, but neglects to describe how to select the team members, how to get them to be effective in their jobs, or even what there exact team responsibilities might be, other than to do "in depth analysis". Fine, but what does *that* mean. Oh, you're supposed to hire the authors to come in and consult with your company and develop another document that describes this. Sorry, this is a non-starter.

Waterfall Method Revisited for Software Development
By Lee C. Harrison
This guide can be very misleading for those working in the software development world.
Apply this method to Software Engineering, and you are revisiting the old Waterfall Method of software development. In today's E-commerce and e-Enterprise worlds, this is not a good place to visit for long. I would only recommend this to folks developing products in a manufacturing environment.
However, Phase 0 Reviews could be a very useful tool on an executive level as a Project Methodology for initiating and prioritizing software development projects and ensuring a product's overall strategic fit while allocating development resources.

One for your reference library
By Tom Hahn Hahnsinnc@aol.com
I think this is THE book on Software Project and Product Management. In-depth coverage of the Core Team approach and explanation of why Core Team is better than other current development methods such as functional or cross-functional teams. This is a great reference book, one every manager should have on his desk. Only thing I didn't like was this new version is paper-back, I liked the hard-backs for books I intend to keep and use. Excellent book !

The Headmaster's Wager, by Vincent Lam

A superbly crafted, highly suspenseful, and deeply affecting debut novel about one man’s loyalty to his country, his family and his heritage

Percival Chen is the headmaster of the most respected English academy in 1960s Saigon, and he is well accustomed to bribing a forever-changing list of government officials in order to maintain the elite status of his school. Fiercely proud of his Chinese heritage, he is quick to spot the business opportunities rife in a divided country, though he also harbors a weakness for gambling haunts and the women who frequent them. He devotedly ignores all news of the fighting that swirls around him, but when his only son gets in trouble with the Vietnamese authorities, Percival faces the limits of his connections and wealth and is forced to send him away.
In the loneliness that follows, Percival finds solace in Jacqueline, a beautiful woman of mixed French and Vietnamese heritage whom he is able to confide in. But Percival's new-found happiness is precarious, and as the complexities of war encroach further into his world, he must confront the tragedy of all he has refused to see.
Graced with intriguingly flawed but wonderfully human characters moving through a richly drawn historical landscape, The Headmaster's Wager is an unforgettable story of love, betrayal and sacrifice.

Review
“[A] sumptuously plotted first novel... Lam goes for the jugular, combining an operatic love story…with evocations of Vietnam’s occupation by the Japanese and the later horrors of the Vietcong’s persecution of the city of Hue… His most provocative character is the shadowy Teacher Mak, Chen’s longtime aide-de-camp, whose shifting masks of comrade and adversary potently embody the intricate survival tactics required of aliens afloat in a country of fractured allegiances.”
—New York Times Book Review

“A vivid, palpable and lyrical document evoking a forgotten segment of modern Vietnamese history. An unforgettable portrait of love, betrayal and sacrifice.”
—Shelf Awareness

"A masterfully paced exploration of a world convulsed by war, wherein faith and reason no longer hold sway...Lam marshals his characters with humor suspense, and tenderness as the fall of Saigon looms...[and] depicts a world caught in an implacable cycle of violence, leavened only by the grace of a father's love."
—Publishers Weekly (starred review)

“Lam, winner of the Scotiabank Giller prize for his short story collection Bloodletting and Other Miraculous Cures, has created a tour de force that reaches from the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong to the American withdrawal from Vietnam in 1975.”
—Library Journal (starred review)

“With The Headmaster's Wager, Lam has produced a grand, sweeping saga that vividly re-creates 40 crucial years of Asian history from Japanese invasion to the “freeing” of South Vietnam.”
—San Antonio Express

“In his first novel, Lam provides both an unusual perspective on the Vietnam War and a sweeping story of one man’s brutal education in realpolitik.”
—Booklist

“Lam writes tellingly about intrigue, political collusion and the clash of cultures.”
—Kirkus

“A first novel of astonishing force, craft and beauty, The Headmaster's Wager conjures up a dizzyingly evocative wartime Saigon in the story of Percival Chen, a Chinese schoolmaster in Vietnam.  This extraordinary book made me weep.  Read it.”
—Janice Y.K. Lee, author of the New York Times bestseller The Piano Teacher

“Set in 1960s Saigon, this debut follows a haughty, corrupt school official whose grave mistake makes him a target of the Vietcong.”
—Entertainment Weekly

“Hugely impressive…powerful and engrossing…The Headmaster’s Wager has the makings of a masterpiece.”
—The Globe and Mail

“A novel of many twists and turns, full of people who aren’t what they appear to be…Lam has created a hypnotically tragic tale, epic in scope.”
—The Toronto Star

“It’s [the] street-level view of a story we’re more accustomed to viewing in panorama that ultimately makes Lam’s novel so effective and affecting. In stages so subtle they’re scarcely noticeable until he’s got you fully in his grip, Lam combines elements of historical fiction, political thriller and domestic drama to present one of the 20th century’s defining stories in a whole new way.”
—The Montreal Gazette

1930, Shantou, China

On a winter night shortly after the New Year festivities, Chen Kai sat on the edge of the family kang, the brick bed. He settled the blanket around his son.

“Gwai jai,” he said. Wellbehaved boy. “Close your eyes.”

“Sit with me?” said Chen Pie Sou with a yawn. “You promised . . .”

“I will.” He would stay until the boy slept. A little more delay. Muy Fa had insisted that Chen Kai remain for the New Year celebration, never mind that the coins from their poor autumn’s harvest were almost gone. What few coins there were, after the landlord had taken his portion of the crop. Chen Kai had conceded that it would be bad luck to leave just before the holiday and agreed to stay a little longer. Now, a few feet away in their oneroom home, Muy Fa scraped the tough skin of rice from the bottom of the pot for the next day’s porridge. Chen Kai smoothed his son’s hair. “If you are to grow big and strong, you must sleep.” Chen Pie Sou was as tall as his father’s waist. He was as big as any boy of his age, for his parents often accepted the knot of hunger in order to feed him.

“Why . . .” A hesitation, the choosing of words. “Why must I grow big and strong?” A fear in the tone, of his father’s absence.

“For your ma, and your ba.” Chen Kai tousled his son’s hair. “For China.”

Later that night, Chen Kai was to board a train. In the morning, he would arrive at the coast, locate a particular boat. A village connection, a cheap passage without a berth. Then, a week on the water to reach Cholon. This place in Indochina was just like China, he had heard, except with money to be made, from both the Annamese and their French rulers.

With his thick, tough fingers, Chen Kai fumbled to undo the charm that hung from his neck. He reached around his son’s neck as if to embrace him, carefully knotted the strong braid of pig gut. Chen Pie Sou searched his chest, and his hand recognized the family good luck charm, a small, rough lump of gold.

“Why does it have no design, ba?” said Chen Pie Sou. He was surprised to be given this valuable item. He knew the charm. He also knew the answers to his questions. “Why is it just a lump?”

“Your ancestor found it this way. He left it untouched rather than having it struck or molded, to remind his descendants that one never knows the form wealth takes, or how luck arrives.”

“How did he find it?” Chen Pie Sou rubbed its blunted angles and soft contours with the tips of his fingers. It was the size of a small lotus seed. He pressed it into the soft place in his own throat. Nearby, his mother, Muy Fa, sighed with impatience. Chen Pie Sou liked to ask certain things, despite knowing the response.

“He pried it from the Gold Mountain in a faraway country. This was the first nugget. Much more was unearthed, in a spot everyone had abandoned. The luck of this wealth brought him home.”

It was cool against Chen Pie Sou’s skin. Now, his right hand gripped his father’s. “Where you are going, are there mountains of gold?”

“That is why I’m going.”

“Ba,” said Chen Pie Sou intently. He pulled at the charm. “Take this with you, so that its luck will keep you safe and bring you home.”

“I don’t need it. I’ve worn it for so long that the luck has worked its way into my skin. Close your eyes.”

“I’m not sleepy.”

“But in your dreams, you will come with me. To the Gold Mountain.”

Chen Kai added a heaping shovel of coal to the embers beneath the kang. Muy Fa, who always complained that her husband indulged their son, made a soft noise with her tongue.

“Don’t worry, dear wife. I will find so much money in Indochina that we will pile coal into the kang all night long,” boasted Chen Kai. “And we will throw out the burned rice in the bottom of that pot.”

“You will come back soon?” asked Chen Pie Sou, his eyes closed now.

Chen Kai squeezed his son’s shoulder. “Sometimes, you may think I am far away. Not so. Whenever you sleep, I am with you in your dreams.”

“But when will you return?”

“As soon as I have collected enough gold.”

“How much?”

“Enough . . . at the first moment I have enough to provide for you, and your mother, I will be on my way home.”

The boy seized his father’s hand in both of his. “Ba, I’m scared.”

“Of what?”

“That you won’t come back.”

“Shh . . . there is nothing to worry about. Your ancestor went to the Gold Mountain, and this lump around your neck proves that he came back. As soon as I have enough to provide for you, I will be back.”

As if startled, the boy opened his eyes wide and struggled with the nugget, anxious to get it off. “Father, take this with you. If you already have this gold, it will not take you as long to collect what you need.”

“Gwai jai,” said Chen Kai, and he calmed the boy’s hands with his own. “I will find so much that such a little bit would not delay me.”

“You will sit with me?”

“Until you are asleep. As I promised.” Chen Kai stroked his son’s head. “Then you will see me in your dreams.”

Chen Pie Sou tried to keep his eyelids from falling shut. They became heavy, and the kang was especially warm that night. When he woke into the cold, bright morning, his breath was like the clouds of a speeding train, wispy white--vanishing. His mother was making the breakfast porridge, her face tear-stained. His father was gone.

The boy yelled, “Ma! It’s my fault!”

She jumped. “What is it?”

“I’m sorry,” sobbed Chen Pie Sou. “I meant to stay awake. If I had, ba would still be here.”

1966, Cholon, Vietnam

It was a new morning toward the end of the dry season, early enough that the fleeting shade still graced the third-floor balcony of the Percival Chen English Academy. Chen Pie Sou, who was known to most as Headmaster Percival Chen, and his son, Dai Jai, sat at the small wicker breakfast table, looking out at La Place de la Liberation. The market girls’ bright silk ao dais glistened. First light had begun to sweep across their bundles of cut vegetables for sale, the noodle sellers’ carts, the flame trees that shaded the sidewalks, and the flower sellers’ arrangements of blooms. Percival had just told Dai Jai that he wished to discuss a concerning matter, and now, as the morning drew itself out a little further, was allowing his son some time to anticipate what this might be.

Looking at his son was like examining himself at that age. At sixteen, Dai Jai had a man’s height, and, Percival assumed, certain desires. A boy’s impatience for their satisfaction was to be expected. Like Percival, Dai Jai had probing eyes, and full lips. Percival often thought it might be his lips which gave him such strong appetites, and wondered if it was the same for his son. Between Dai Jai’s eyebrows, and traced from his nose around the corners of his mouth, the beginnings of creases sometimes appeared. These so faint that no one but his father might notice, or recognize as the earliest outline of what would one day become a useful mask. Controlled, these lines would be a mask to show other men, hinting at insight regarding a delicate situation, implying an unspoken decision, or signifying nothing except to leave them guessing. Such creases were long since worn into the fabric of Percival’s face, but on Dai Jai they could still vanish--to show the smooth skin of a boy’s surprise. Now, they were slightly inflected, revealed Dai Jai’s worry over what his father might want to discuss, and concealed nothing from Percival. That was as it should be. Already, Percival regretted that he needed to reprimand his son, but in such a situation, it was the duty of a good father.

Chen Pie Sou addressed his son in their native Teochow dialect, “Son, you must not forget that you are Chinese,” and stared at him.

“Ba?”

He saw Dai Jai’s hands twitch, then settle. “You have been seen with a girl. Here. In my school.”

“There are . . . many girls here at your school, Father.” Dai Jai’s right hand went to his neck, fiddled with the gold chain, on which hung the family good luck charm.

“Annam nuy jai, hai um hai?” An Annamese girl, isn’t it? It was not entirely the boy’s fault. The local beauties were so easy with their smiles and favors. “At your age, emotions can be reckless.”

The balcony door swung open and Foong Jie, the head servant, appeared with her silver serving tray. She set one bowl of thin rice noodles before Percival. She placed another in front of Dai Jai. Percival nodded at the servant.

Each bowl of noodles was crowned by a rose of raw flesh, the thin petals of beef pink and ruffled. Foong Jie put down dishes of bean sprouts, of mint, purple basil leaves on the stem, hot peppers, and halved limes with which to dress the bowls. She arranged an urn of fragrant broth, chilled glasses, the coffee pot that rattled with ice cubes, and a dish of cut papayas and mangos. Percival did not move to touch the food, and so neither did his son, whose eyes were now cast down. The master looked to Foong Jie, tilted his head toward the door, and she slipped away.

Percival addressed his son in a concerned low voice. “Is this true? That you have become . . . fond of an Annamese?”

Dai Jai said, “You have always told me to tutor weaker students.” In that, thought Percival, was a hint of evasion, a boy deciding whether to lie.

Percival waved off a fly, poured broth from the urn onto his noodles, added tender basil leaves, bright red peppers, and squeezed a lime into his bowl. With the tips of his chopsticks, he drowned the meat beneath the surface of the steaming liquid, and loosened it with a small motion of his wrist. Already the flesh was cooked, the stain of blood a haze, which vanished into the fragrant broth. Dai Jai prepared his bowl in the same way. He peered deep into the soup and gathered noodles onto his spoon, lifted it to his mouth, swallowed mechanically. On the boy’s face, anguish. So it was a real first love, the boy afraid to lose her. But this could not go on. Less painful to cut it early. Percival told himself to be firm for the boy’s own good.

From the square below came the shouts of a customer’s complaint, and a breakfast porridge seller’s indignant reply. Percival waited for the argument outside to finish, then said, “What subject did Teacher Mak see you tutoring, yesterday after classes?” Mak, Percival’s most trusted employee and closest friend, told him that Dai Jai and a student had been holding hands in an empty classroom. When Percival had asked, Mak had said that she was not Chinese. “Mak indicated that it was not a school subject being taught.” Percival saw perspiration bead on Dai Jai’s temples. The sun was climbing quickly, promising a hot day, but Percival knew that this heat came from within the boy.

The sweat on Dai Jai’s face ran a jagged path down his cheeks. He looked as if he was about to speak, but then he took another mouthful of food, stuffed himself to prevent words.

“Yes, let’s eat,” said Percival. Though in the past few years, Dai Jai had sprung up to slightly surpass his father’s height, he was still gangly, his frame waiting for his body to catch up. Though everyone complimented Dai Jai on his resemblance to his father, Percival recognized in his silence his mother’s stubbornness. The father’s duty was to correct the son, Percival assured himself. When the boy was older, he would see that his father was right.

They ate. Their chopsticks and spoons clicked on the bowls. Each regarded the square as if they had never before seen it, as if just noticing the handsome post office that the French had built, which now was also an army office. Three Buddhist monks with iron begging bowls stood in the shadow of St. Francis Xavier, the Catholic church that was famous for providing sanctuary to Ngo Dinh Diem, the former president of Vietnam, and his brother Ngo Dinh Nhu, during the 1963 coup. After finishing his noodles, Percival sipped his coffee, and selected a piece of cut papaya using his chopsticks. He aimed for an understanding tone, saying, “Teacher Mak tells me she is very pretty.” He lifted the fruit with great care, for too much pressure with the chopsticks would slice it in half. “But your love is improper.” He should have called it something smaller, rather than love, but the word had already escaped.

Percival slipped the papaya into his mouth and turned his eyes to the monks, waiting for his son’s reply. There was the one-eyed monk who begged at the school almost every day. The kitchen staff knew that he and his brothers were to be fed, even if they had to go out and buy more food. It was the headmaster’s standing order. On those steps, Percival remembered, he had seen the Ngo brothers surrender themselves to the custody of army officers. They had agreed to safe passage, an exile in America. They had set off for Tan Son Nhut Airport within the protection of a green armored troop carrier. On the way there, the newspapers reported, the soldiers stopped the vehicle at a railroad crossing and shot them both in the head.

“Teacher Mak has nothing better to do than to be your spy?” said Dai Jai, his voice starting bold but tapering off.

“That is a double disrespect--to your teacher and to your father.”

“Forgive me, ba,” said Dai Jai, his eyes down again.

“Also, you know my rule, that school staff must not have affairs with students.” Percival himself kept to the rule despite occasional temptation. As Mak often reminded him, there was no need to give anyone in Saigon even a flimsy pretext to shut them down.

“But I am not--”

“You are the headmaster’s son. And you are Chinese. Don’t you know the shame of my father’s second marriage? Let me tell you of Chen Kai’s humiliation--”

“I know about Ba Hai, and yes, her cruelty. You have told--”

“And I will tell you again, until you learn its lesson! Ba Hai was very beautiful. Did that save my father? An Annamese woman will offer you her sweetness, and then turn to sell it to someone else.”

Sons and fathers
By Friederike Knabe
Sometimes in his dreams Chen Pie Sou returns to his childhood in Shantou, China, and to the day of his father's first departure for the "Gold Mountain" in Indochina. His father, Chen Kai, had tied a small good luck charm around his neck: a tiny rough lump of gold, found long ago by an ancestor. It symbolizes the promise of wealth and good fortune, left without inscription because the fortunes can take different forms for each wearer. Several times over his youth the father returns with more money; the growing Chen Pie Sou ponders: "... Chen Kai had an empty space [within him] that needed to be filled, but [he] could not understand what must be obtained to satisfy that void and bring his father home [for good]." The grown Chen Pie Sou, now known as Percival Chen, having followed his father to Saigon and living more than comfortably in Cholon, the Chinese part of town, "felt the same void, all money and distractions, could not fill it..." His position as Headmaster of the Percival Chen English Academy, the prestigious English Language School he established in his father's house, seems to be a part-time distraction at best; his main occupation being that of a wheeler and dealer par excellence, a bon-vivant, a gambler, womanizer, and a powerful representative of Vietnam's wealthy Chinese minority. His good luck charm that has served him well is now tied around the neck of Dai Jai, his beloved son... With it Chen not only passes on a family symbol he instils in his son the pride he holds for their Chinese heritage and traditions.

THE HEADMASTER'S WAGER is Canadian Vincent Lam's eagerly awaited first novel, following the author's 2006 Scotia Bank Giller Prize for his story collection Bloodletting & Miraculous Cures. Inspired by his own family background and, in particular, his grandfather's life in Vietnam, Lam has created a powerful and absorbing story of love, loyalty and betrayal, violence and tenderness, self-importance and naïveté and, eventually, hope and redemption. Set against the politically turbulent times in nineteen sixties and seventies divided Vietnam, Lam confidently balances the private and intimate sphere of one man's family story with the depiction of changing realities affecting them. At one level, he, like others in the Chinese community, shows a somewhat naïve belief that his personal influence will ensure successful negotiations with any new political power players, on another his unwavering belief in the protective guidance of the family's ancestors on his and his son's behalf, even when Dai Jai attracts the attention of the Vietnamese "quiet police". More often than not, however, Chen relies on his colleague and friend, the teacher Mak, who, while Chinese but raised in Vietnam, is the complete opposite to Chen: quiet, reserved, without apparent vices. We learn about Chen's background and his friendship to Mak, in flashbacks. Lam gives us enough context to understand how events have shaped the two friends over time and opens a perspective on the Vietnam of the time that we have rarely seen or read about.

Lam always provides just enough detail to set the scene or build the drama to place events, such as the day of the first TET Offensive (1968), without moving outside of his narrative stream or his characters. The portrayal of the effect on civilians during that night could not have been more affecting. In the Offensive's aftermath the powers have shifted in Saigon and Chen's kind of gambles and bribes are less than successful and even ineffective. When another crisis concerning his son throws him off his routines, Percival has to call in all his favours and wager even more. His father's motto: "... never wager more than you can afford to lose. Leave yourself room to recover..." is profoundly tested. Will the lump of gold, the voice of the ancestors save them?

Percival Chen is not an easy character to like. He gets away with too much in his dealings; he can be too casual and insensitive. His ancestor worship, while plausibly conveyed, seems too naïve and at times like an excuse for Chen to stand on the sidelines of political and societal events; he is convinced that he can do business whatever the political system in Vietnam. Yet, there is a kinder and gentler man underneath it all and this side of Percival is endearing and attracts sympathy when endangered. Lam touches on this side of Chen on and off in the earlier parts of the novel. Eventually it comes fully to light with the unexpected love for a beautiful woman and all that develops from then on in his life...

Vincent Lam's novel is written mostly in a detached tone, his protagonist's story told in the third person. The author also takes some time in the beginning, for some readers maybe too much, to carefully build his central characters and to describe the context in which Chen and they operate in Saigon. But once the scenarios are set and the primary characters have been fully introduced, the narrative tension rises and rises towards some extraordinary drama that remains unforgettable. I find it important not to even hint at some of its elements... other than to say, the patience in the beginning is richly rewarded as the story unfolds and moves towards a conclusion that is as logical within the story as it is likely surprising for the reader. The best book I've read all summer!
By Susan Blumberg-Kason
This is an amazing novel and one I'm not going to forget. Vincent Lam is a fabulous storyteller and an emergency room physician when he's not writing. The headmaster is Percival Chen, an overseas Chinese who settles in Saigon's Cholon (Chinatown) district with his Hong Kong-born wife. The two have a child, Dai Jai, who is eight when they divorce.

Percival gambles, drinks, and visits brothels. At his side is his trusted friend and colleague, Mr. Mak. It's Mak who convinces Percival to open an English language institute. One night, while trying to win back his debt at a high stakes mahjong game, Percival bets on a wager that will alter the course of his and his family's lives.

I love how Vincent Lam weaves both Vietnamese and Chinese history into this novel. He also elegantly incorporates the backstory of Percival's early years in Shantou, his high school years in Hong Kong, and his father's rags to riches story in Vietnam. The story is thrilling to the very last word. Although many of the characters are flawed (aren't we all?), I sympathized with most of them, especially Mak. I can't wait to read more from Vincent Lam!!

Vietnam revisited.
By Vital Spark
I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. Set in South Vietnam during the war, it tells the story of a Chinese man, the headmaster of a private "English Academy" attended by the children of wealthy parents who want their kids to get jobs as translators with the U.S. forces.

Percival, the headmaster, is not without his faults, and, when presented with a choice, he invariably makes the wrong one.For instance, he is so busy making money, that he chooses to ignore the war until it is too late for him and his loved ones.

The novel is extremely well written and presents the tragedy of Vietnam from a fresh and different point of view. It is not a depressing novel. It may seem unlikely that a positive, life-affirming message could emerge from this story, but one does , one which I found deeply moving.Highly recommended.
