After the Storm by Sangeeta Bhargava is a lovely novel set in India during the time of the Freedom Fighters uprising led by Gandhi against the British Raj in 1941. Princess Malvika Singh, who attends a boarding school and meets new friends but is known as being mischievous and spoilt. But tragedy strikes close to home and is a very sobering experience for all the girls at the school, especially the Princess, who is forced to become responsible and independent. Of course, in every good novel there must be unrequited love and its yearning, which we follow through the eyes of Raven, the teacher whom she trusts. The tumultous times are the setting and violence makes love blossom and the reader learns about this period of Indian history. An enjoyable read for romantics and history buffs.

About the Author
SANGEETA BHARGAVA was born in a remote corner of the Maharashtra region of India and studied in Lucknow. Although she has an MBA in Finance, she soon realized that the business world was not for her and decided to go back to her first love: writing. She is the author of Letters to my Baby, a book on pregnancy and baby care. The World Beyond is her debut novel. She now lives in London with her husband, two children, 10,000 books and a temperamental laptop.

Compelling Read

After the Storm by Sangeeta Bhargava
After the Storm is an amazing cross section of post-WWII Indian turmoil. The author, of Indian heritage herself, has a unique understanding of the trials, issues, and concerns of the peoples of the regions embroiled in working and fighting for independence from the British monarchy and rule. It takes place in 1947, a time of world-wide change, but it concentrates on the experiences of four young people, two girls in particular, and their teacher, a man of British decent with Indian sympathies. The story highlights how the native people of India had a difficult time under a foreign rule, affecting all of them, including the royal family.
Ms. Bhargava paints an interesting picture of a princess, Mili, sent to a boarding school with her best friend, Vicki. The two are very young and immature upon their arrival, but circumstances cause them to face adult situations, some of which no one should ever have to encounter. The book treats many of these events with a delicacy and diplomacy that allows the reader to become comfortable with the characters, but there is a jarring reality that is suddenly presented to the reader, causing a juxtaposition of emotions.
The first half of the text seemed to be aimed at teenagers or young adults, but the violent scenes quickly remind the audience of the somber nature of the times and place. There is a psychological dance between the genders, where trust must be earned, and sometimes is betrayed; however, the main focus is the romance between the protagonist and the antagonist. It is a very tantalizing hint of emotions throughout most of the book, but only after they have learned what is truly important in life do they understand what they want. Unfortunately, it may have been a realisation that comes too late for both.
After the Storm draws lines in the sand between rulers and ruled, male and female, royalty and subjects, and most importantly, between cruelty and compassion. The only thing that would give this book more impact would be a little more background on the times and struggle for independence. It is a unique situation, but many countries and cultures have and still do grapple with the desire for autonomy and freedom. Not all have accomplished it and a little more information on Gandhi and his followers would have been appreciated. A historical romance is what this book is, and the romance portion is very well done.
Ms. Bhargava weaves a wonderful tale about the friendship between two sets of young people, one male and one female. Her writing skills are superb and draw the reader into the interactions and culture of a very misunderstood (in the Western world) realm, making it a little less mysterious and unreachable. It is a book adults should read and then share with their teenage counterparts. Excellent read!

Seamless integration of history, romance and Nature!

Ms. Bhargava's second novel of its genre truly lives up to its expectations! She does a fantastic job of capturing the essence of the general public sentiment in India from that period while simultaneously weaving in the social fabric from that era- such as the plight of widows and women in society.
What I found most impressive was Ms. Bhargava's excellent skills in depicting (and integrating in her novel) the wonderful scenery and surroundings in the Uttarakhand region in India. While satiating the appetite of any history buff, the book also appeases to any nature-loving globetrotter looking for an excuse to visit India!
I was also impressed by how Ms. Bhargava is able to effortlessly integrate important turnkey events in the history of India from that time, into her novel.
The Jalianwala bagh incident, Gandhi's Non-cooperation movement, Netaji Shubash Chandra Bose... at times it felt less of a novel and more of a true story!
While I am not a big fan of romantic literature, this is by far one of the best exceptions I have read.
Would warmly recommend it for a nice lazy afternoon with a cuppa tea...maybe on the countryside on a slightly misty-rainy day!
...and the story is definitely prime candidate for a Bollywood production. Look out for the movie! :)
