Perfect for the Single Vegan!

This wonderful cookbook is perfect for the single vegan. For each week, the book contains a shopping list of all ingredients needed for that week's recipes. No running to the supermarket to pick up additional food and no waste! I really like no longer having to divide the ingredients in recipes by four or six -- these recipes are made for one person. The shopping list is a great idea -- I appreciate not being left at the end of the week with 1/2 can of beans, for example.
I have cooked every single recipe in the book, with the exception of some of the desserts. The recipes are varied, both in type of food and in ingredients used. I have rarely come across a cookbook with as high a proportion of the recipes ones I would definitely cook again. As with any cookbook, there are a few nits:
(1) For a very few weeks, ingredients are missing on the shopping list. (Usually, it's only a carrot or an extra onion.)
(2) Only one recipe did not seem to work at all -- the dumpling recipe. This may be due more to my technique than the recipe.
(3) There are very few ingredients that can't be found in a typical supermarket -- I have been able to find everything at my local natural foods grocer.
This book has become the backbone of my food plan. I look forward to coming home to varied, easy-to-prepare meals -- often with enough left over for breakfast!

The best vegan cookbook you will ever own...

I have recently become vegan and this is the first cookbook I bought. It has incredible recipies that are so easy to follow, and incredibly delicious. To counter the previous review, I either use a non-stick pan or use cooking spray when oil is asked for. What I don't like about other cookbooks is that it is hard to reduce servings from 4-6 servings to 1 or 2, rather, it is much easier to double or triple one when you have company. I also love that the author has a no waste attitude, meaning what you buy on the shopping list each week is used up THAT week. I hate that normal cookbooks will ask for a teaspoon of something you will end up throwing away when it goes bad in the fridge. My boyfriend loves this cookbook so much, he claims that what I cook is above restaurant quality, and there is such variety in the book of tastes and styles of cooking. I recommend this cookbook to any vegan, whether newly vegan or someone who wants a little more variety. Try the indonesian noodles with peanut sauce or the tofu with cashews and vegetables to start, you will be hooked.

Excellent seasonal vegan cooking for one person

This book has includes dinner (and lunches on the weekends) for cooking for one vegan. Once a week desserts (fruit based) are also given. Each week comes with a shopping list for the meals you'll be cooking so you can easily shop for groceries. In addition, the book is separated into spring/summer and fall/winter recipes so you can cook with whichever vegetables are cheap and abundant.

On the negative side, there are not many seasonings used and most of the recipes come out on the bland side. That said, the amounts these recipes yield are quite large and sometimes I am unable to eat the whole batch! Overall, I give this book five stars because it has a great variety in the recipes it offers so you'll not get bored easily. Ingredients are easily obtained from any grocery store (a few items are specialized and are available at natural food markets).

This is the most used cookbook in my collection because the recipes are simple, quick and often use the staples of every kitchen. It really helped my transitioning to vegan diet. I highly recommend it for new vegans or those considering adopting the diet.

The First Great Awakening was a time of heightened religious activity in the colonial New England. Among those whom the English settlers tried to convert to Christianity were the region's native peoples. In this book, Linford Fisher tells the gripping story of American Indians' attempts to wrestle with the ongoing realities of colonialism between the 1670s and 1820. In particular, he looks at how some members of previously unevangelized Indian communities in Connecticut, Rhode Island, western Massachusetts, and Long Island adopted Christian practices, often joining local Congregational churches and receiving baptism. Far from passively sliding into the cultural and physical landscape after King Philip's War, he argues, Native individuals and communities actively tapped into transatlantic structures of power to protect their land rights, welcomed educational opportunities for their children, and joined local white churches. Religion repeatedly stood at the center of these points of cultural engagement, often in hotly contested ways. Although these Native groups had successfully resisted evangelization in the seventeenth century, by the eighteenth century they showed an increasing interest in education and religion. Their sporadic participation in the First Great Awakening marked a continuation of prior forms of cultural engagement. More surprisingly, however, in the decades after the Awakening, Native individuals and sub-groups asserted their religious and cultural autonomy to even greater degrees by leaving English churches and forming their own Indian Separate churches. In the realm of education, too, Natives increasingly took control, preferring local reservation schools and demanding Indian teachers whenever possible. In the 1780s, two small groups of Christian Indians moved to New York and founded new Christian Indian settlements. But the majority of New England Natives-even those who affiliated with Christianity-chose to remain in New England, continuing to assert their own autonomous existence through leasing land, farming, and working on and off the reservations.

While Indian involvement in the Great Awakening has often been seen as total and complete conversion, Fisher's analysis of church records, court documents, and correspondence reveals a more complex reality. Placing the Awakening in context of land loss and the ongoing struggle for cultural autonomy in the eighteenth century casts it as another step in the ongoing, tentative engagement of native peoples with Christian ideas and institutions in the colonial world. Charting this untold story of the Great Awakening and the resultant rise of an Indian Separatism and its effects on Indian cultures as a whole, this gracefully written book challenges long-held notions about religion and Native-Anglo-American interaction

The Indian Great Awakening

This book is an excellent source for information about the Christian missionary movements in New England among the Indians. It has great coverage of the Native ministers and their work with the people. I liked the way he covered each issue and mentioned the ways Native people chose to continue to express their culture. It is a good read even if you are not a historian or anthropoligist. Wonderfully researched and pulled together into a narrative. Look forward to the next offering from this author.

After the Storm by Sangeeta Bhargava is a lovely novel set in India during the time of the Freedom Fighters uprising led by Gandhi against the British Raj in 1941. Princess Malvika Singh, who attends a boarding school and meets new friends but is known as being mischievous and spoilt. But tragedy strikes close to home and is a very sobering experience for all the girls at the school, especially the Princess, who is forced to become responsible and independent. Of course, in every good novel there must be unrequited love and its yearning, which we follow through the eyes of Raven, the teacher whom she trusts. The tumultous times are the setting and violence makes love blossom and the reader learns about this period of Indian history. An enjoyable read for romantics and history buffs.

SANGEETA BHARGAVA was born in a remote corner of the Maharashtra region of India and studied in Lucknow. Although she has an MBA in Finance, she soon realized that the business world was not for her and decided to go back to her first love: writing. She is the author of Letters to my Baby, a book on pregnancy and baby care. The World Beyond is her debut novel. She now lives in London with her husband, two children, 10,000 books and a temperamental laptop.

After the Storm is an amazing cross section of post-WWII Indian turmoil. The author, of Indian heritage herself, has a unique understanding of the trials, issues, and concerns of the peoples of the regions embroiled in working and fighting for independence from the British monarchy and rule. It takes place in 1947, a time of world-wide change, but it concentrates on the experiences of four young people, two girls in particular, and their teacher, a man of British decent with Indian sympathies. The story highlights how the native people of India had a difficult time under a foreign rule, affecting all of them, including the royal family.
Ms. Bhargava paints an interesting picture of a princess, Mili, sent to a boarding school with her best friend, Vicki. The two are very young and immature upon their arrival, but circumstances cause them to face adult situations, some of which no one should ever have to encounter. The book treats many of these events with a delicacy and diplomacy that allows the reader to become comfortable with the characters, but there is a jarring reality that is suddenly presented to the reader, causing a juxtaposition of emotions.
The first half of the text seemed to be aimed at teenagers or young adults, but the violent scenes quickly remind the audience of the somber nature of the times and place. There is a psychological dance between the genders, where trust must be earned, and sometimes is betrayed; however, the main focus is the romance between the protagonist and the antagonist. It is a very tantalizing hint of emotions throughout most of the book, but only after they have learned what is truly important in life do they understand what they want. Unfortunately, it may have been a realisation that comes too late for both.
After the Storm draws lines in the sand between rulers and ruled, male and female, royalty and subjects, and most importantly, between cruelty and compassion. The only thing that would give this book more impact would be a little more background on the times and struggle for independence. It is a unique situation, but many countries and cultures have and still do grapple with the desire for autonomy and freedom. Not all have accomplished it and a little more information on Gandhi and his followers would have been appreciated. A historical romance is what this book is, and the romance portion is very well done.
Ms. Bhargava weaves a wonderful tale about the friendship between two sets of young people, one male and one female. Her writing skills are superb and draw the reader into the interactions and culture of a very misunderstood (in the Western world) realm, making it a little less mysterious and unreachable. It is a book adults should read and then share with their teenage counterparts. Excellent read!

Seamless integration of history, romance and Nature!

Ms. Bhargava's second novel of its genre truly lives up to its expectations! She does a fantastic job of capturing the essence of the general public sentiment in India from that period while simultaneously weaving in the social fabric from that era- such as the plight of widows and women in society.

What I found most impressive was Ms. Bhargava's excellent skills in depicting (and integrating in her novel) the wonderful scenery and surroundings in the Uttarakhand region in India. While satiating the appetite of any history buff, the book also appeases to any nature-loving globetrotter looking for an excuse to visit India!
I was also impressed by how Ms. Bhargava is able to effortlessly integrate important turnkey events in the history of India from that time, into her novel.
The Jalianwala bagh incident, Gandhi's Non-cooperation movement, Netaji Shubash Chandra Bose... at times it felt less of a novel and more of a true story!

While I am not a big fan of romantic literature, this is by far one of the best exceptions I have read.
Would warmly recommend it for a nice lazy afternoon with a cuppa tea...maybe on the countryside on a slightly misty-rainy day!
...and the story is definitely prime candidate for a Bollywood production. Look out for the movie! :)

Good Romantic and Historical REad

After the Storm by Sangeeta Bhargava is a lovely novel set in India during the time of the Freedom Fighters uprising led by Gandhi against the British Raj in 1941. Princess Malvika Singh, who attends a boarding school and meets new friends but is known as being mischievous and spoilt. But tragedy strikes close to home and is a very sobering experience for all the girls at the school, especially the Princess, who is forced to become responsible and independent. Of course, in every good novel there must be unrequited love and its yearning, which we follow through the eyes of Raven, the teacher whom she trusts. The tumultous times are the setting and violence makes love blossom and the reader learns about this period of Indian history. An enjoyable read for romantics and history buffs.

Es un buen libro, pero consiste mayormente en darte palabras de estímulo que te impulsen, que en analizar las causas más profundas de las emociones tóxicas. En todo caso lo recomendaría pues te da pautas respecto a temas en los que debemos darnos el tiempo para pensar como se aplican a nosotros o como deberíamos aplicarlos en nuestra vida.

Al reprimir emociones que sentimos todos los días de nuestras vidas, corremos el riesgo de que estas degeneren en agentes tóxicos que al ser reconducidos a nuestros cuerpos y mentes convirtiéndose en dolencias somatizadas, en fobias, conductas antisociales, reacciones violentas o erráticas ante estímulos o sensaciones desagradables o no deseadas. En este libro el autor nos habla de la ansiedad, la angustia, la insatisfacción crónica, el apego, el enojo, la envidia, los miedos, la verguenza, la depresión, la frustración, el duelo, el llanto, las culpas, el rechazo y los celos como emociones ya intoxicadas y nos brinda algunas técnicas y estrategias para detectarlas, corregirlas, neutralizarlas o trabajarlas a profundis si fuese necesario para liberarnos de esas energías negativas que no solucionan nuestros problemas sino que muchas veces las agravan si no se les ataja a tiempo.
Un libro que nos lleva a explorar la parte consciente e inconsciente de nuestra mente con el propósito de ayudarnos a eliminar la ira, la tristeza, la rabia contenida, la dependencia física y emocional, las reacciones negativas y las fobias entre otras a la vez que vamos conociendo mejor nuestro yo interior, los puntos débiles de nuestra psiquis, personalidad, forma de ser y reaccionar ante situaciones desagradables o extremas. Con un lenguaje claro, sencillo y directo, es una obra que se lee fácil y se entiende mejor aunque si el lector cree que con esta simple lectura sus problemas se solucionaran está equivocado si no los trabaja a conciencia, los combate o pide ayudas a terceros, preferiblemente personal cualificado, si es necesario.

The show provokes a bevy of rich questions and discussion points, such as: What are the ethical issues surrounding drugs? What lessons about existentialism and fatalism does the show present? How does the show grapple with the concept of the end ‘justifying’ the means? Is Walt really free not to ‘break bad’? Can he be redeemed? What is the definition and nature of badness (or evil) itself? Contributors address these and other questions as they dissect the legacy of the show and discuss its contributions to philosophical conversations.

About the Author
Kevin S. Decker is Professor of Philosophy at Eastern Washington University, USA. He is the author of Who is Who? The Philosophy of Doctor Who and has written many chapters in books on philosophy and popular culture as well as journal articles on ethics, social theory, and political philosophy. 


David R. Koepsell has been a tenured associate professor of philosophy at the Delft University of Technology, Netherlands, and a Visiting Professor at UNAM, Instituto de Filosoficas and the Unidad Posgrado, Mexico. 

Robert Arp is the author of Scenario Visualization: An Evolutionary Account of Creative Problem Solving and co-author of Philosophy DeMYSTiFieD, Critical Thinking: An Introduction to Reasoning Well, 2nd Edition, and What's Good on TV? Teaching Ethics through Television. He is also editor of 1001 Ideas That Changed the Way We Think, South Park and Philosophy, Tattoos-Philosophy for Everyone: I Ink, Therefore I Am, Psych and Philosophy, Homeland and Philosophy, and The Devil and Philosophy.

Read.Think. Enjoy

Unless you are a failed philosopy major, aren't a Breaking Bad fan, or have a serious vendetta against Open Court, you can't help but enjoy this stimulating collection of essays. Used to be the word Philosophy would numb most laymen. How wonderful that philosophy has breached the ivory tower and is now a discipline accesible to all. Questions about choices, about health and mortal illness, about responsibility, about good and evil, all central issues in Breaking Bad are discussed and analyzed from different points of view and with some different conclusions. But each essay inspires us to really THINK instead of simply watch. The whole experience of reading this book and the other Philosophy and Popular culture series is that of having a great conversation at the end of a really good movie. Do people do that anymore? Well worth buying, reading and discussing.

Breaking Philosophy for the Masses

This latest entry in Open Court's 'Philosophy' series makes a fun and thought provoking companion piece to AMC's drug-fueled serial drama. Breaking Bad is a show that dwells in the muck and the murk of moral greyness and that continually asks hard questions about right and wrong, self-service and justifiability, and the choices that can lead any person to ends both good and evil...and Breaking Bad & Philosophy does an exceptional job of probing beyond the questions that lie on the show's surface and delving into issues even more deeply embedded in its DNA.

Essays like Anderson & Lopez's "Meth, Liberty, & the Pursuit of Happiness," Kimberly Baltzer-Jaray's "Finding Happiness in a Black Hat," and Denise Du Vernay's "Breaking Bonds" (a thoughtful deconstruction of the part that gender roles, sexual politics, and feminist philosophies play in the show's narrative) all take subject matter that is woven into the series' fabric and explore their chosen topics with care and concern, looking at the show through a variety of analytical prisms.

Not every included essay hits the same high notes, but there is enough substance and enough fun in these pages to warrant perusing. If you're already a fan of Breaking Bad, you'll enjoy the painstaking detail with which these authors have interpreted the show and its many pet themes.

And like the best entries in the Philosophy books, BB&P explores age old ideas in the light of our latest pop cultural obsessions, providing a read that relates complex issues to a contemporary audience who might not otherwise realize the depth and the breadth of the topics being dissected each week by their favorite Appointment TV Shows.

Du Vernay's "Breaking Bonds" is my personal favorite of all the book's chapters, but there are many standout pieces that make it well worth your time. Overall, a great summer read!

me encanto la historia es buenisima ,divertida me encantaron los personajes ,especialmente los malory tios de regina.disfrute muchisimo la historia y tambiem me enoje con lo terco y las aciones de nicolas.regina es bella tiene fortuna y muchos pretendientes pero teme que ninguno vaya a tener la aceptacion de sus tios.cuando por un error nicolas secuestra a la mujer equivocada y se da cuenta de su error ya es muy tarde .el escandalo lo lleva a comprometerse con regina rogando que ella de por terminado su compromiso porque el ha dado su palabra y el es un hombre de honor.nicolas hace todo lo posible porque ella rompa com el .nicolas no quiere casarse con ella ni con nadie.sus razones lo llevan a alejarla de el aunque ya se haygan casado.cuando el se da cuenta que no puede olvidarla volvera a pedirle perdon .regina se entregara incondicionalmente pero todo lo que el le ha hecho !podra regina perdonarlo !nicolas aprendera a confiar y amar pero antes tendra que enfrentar su pasado que esta en su presente y puede conprometer su futuro y es lo que lo ha mantenido separado de regina.una historia increiblemente buena y fascinante.la recomiendo ciento por ciento.

After reading the first story in this book, I thought this would be a very, very good collection. Alas, there were only a couple more that were as good as the first. Not a bad book overall, though.

A revised copy of the original 1959 publication, with new stories about working dogs and helpmates added (and a few of the old stories that came across as dated removed), Cold Noses and Warm Hearts: Beloved Dog Stories by Great Authors is an anthology of short stories and excerpts celebrating man's best friend by a wide variety of well-known writers, from E. B. White and John Steinbeck to Rudyard Kipling, P. G. Wodehouse, and many more. All tales have a common thread in their reverence for the bond between dog and master, whether told with a touch of humor or the underscore of deep emotion. A superb giftbook for dog lovers everywhere.

Be ready to shed a tear!

I've read Corey Fords' work, over the years. That's what first attracted me to this wonderful collection of laughs and sniffles. Well, that and, the cover looks exactly like my springer - Mackinac!! But really, a collection of work by such a diverse list of literary greats... something to be re-read, and quoted, often.

Bit of a non-entity

I "read" this book feeling like I had missed something. Roger is a bog standard employee, one imagines he is an escapee from Dilbert or similar, whose one notable feature is that he is always sans pants and trousers. And, unlike Dilbert, he's just not very funny.

Now I'm sure we can all identify with the "turning up at school/work/etc naked/half dressed" nightmare, but essentially the whole joke here is "Look! You can see his penis! HAHA isn't that hilarious?!" If that is your idea of a fun time then this book may make you howl with laughter, but for me 96 pages of puerile schoolboy humour was about 90 pages too long.

There were a couple of pages that just made zero sense, failing even to have the "HAHA SEE THE PENIS" humour (for a loose definition of the word humour...) of the rest of the book.

The one picture that did make me laugh was poor Roger having just slammed into a glass door, but even that, frankly, was funny because of the glass door, not because of the squashed penis.

This was free, so at least I wasted no money on this collection of rather weak genitalia jokes, and I did laugh once. For that, and for the fact that I didn't feel strongly enough about it to say that I "hated" it, it earns an extra star.

Jeremy Gerlis, the artist/author of the Roger series is a creative madman. What our world currently needs is more madmen like Jeremy. If you have any taste for the very clever and slightly risque, these books are a valuable addition to your coffee table. We gave them to friends (and anemies) as holiday gifts last year. Roger, a conventional British office employee, lives his life sans pants, and sans captions on the cartoons.
