transformative ideas
By Todd B. Kashdan
To me, Barbara Fredrickson is one of the best psychological researchers around. She is bold, changing the way people think about positive emotions. She is creative, designing strategies for manipulating seemingly abstract concepts such as love, agile thinking, resilience, and personal growth in the laboratory. She is tuned into the real world, trying to unravel what human beings really care about. And so it comes to no surprise that this book is incredible. It will change the way people think about love. She alters the timescale of love. Instead of limiting love to a small number of profoundly intense relationships where our innermost sense of self feels cared for, accepted, and validated by another person, she defines love by those "micro-moments" when we feel connected to another human being with a sense of vitality, deep affection, and there is a mutual investment of attention and respect. This new conceptual model of love changes the way we think about social interactions and relationships. Love becomes a renewable, endless resource. We can tap into it at any time by changing the episodes in our daily life. Instead of viewing relationships as healthy or problematic, we can think about the proportion of time spent together where positivity resonates. A binary world is traded in for the dynamic, complex moments that are the building blocks of a pleasurable, meaningful life.

This new model of love is certain to be controversial and highly debated.
And that is the sign of an author who pushes boundaries.

Barbara shares the rigorous scientific research that led to her ideas about love.
She also offers a number of strategies for the reader to cultivate more frequent and intense loving episodes.

Yes, the title is horrendous. But ignore it because underneath the cover is a new perspective at viewing your life and relationships. In my dream world, all scientists are as innovative and lucid as Barbara....

cheers,
Todd

Love and health co-create each other
By Film Fan
This important and intriguing book inspired several of my professional coach friends and I to create an ad hoc book club just so we can discuss it. The book has also inspired me to conduct an experiment on myself using the book's concepts and exercises.

The most important ideas, based on scientific research, that I've gained from Love 2.0, are:

1. There is a critical relationship between "vagal tone" (which we can influence), and our health and experience of love.

2. Love literally makes people healthier.

3. Our brains broadcast everything we feel to every part of of us, creating health or illness and rendering us more or less equipped for love.

4. Loneliness = inflammation in the immune system.

5. Lack of love in your life is more damaging to your health than smoking, drinking too much alcohol or being obese.

6. We give health to others when we engage with them with "positivity resonance" so every interaction with others is an opportunity for both of us to thrive more.

The author provides many suggestions for exercises to increase your experience of "positivity resonance" (and thus health and well-being), some of which have been used in research her team has done. I can't wait to try these out myself and suggest them to my coaching clients, as well.

An impressive book for many reasons
By rlweaverii
Book review by Richard L. Weaver II, Ph.D.

This is an impressive book for a number of reasons. First, Fredrickson cites 228 footnotes in 192 pages of text--more than one per page. These are not lightweight sources. Most are from scholarly journals such as the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, the Journal of Marriage and Family, Cognition and Emotion, or American Psychologist---you get the picture.

A second reason why this is an impressive book has to do with the author's credentials. Fredrickson is the Kenan Distinguished Professor of Psychology and Director of the Positive Emotions and Psychophysiology Laboratory at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She earned her undergraduate degree from Carleton College and her Ph.D. from Stanford University. She is a leading scholar within social psychology, affective science, and positive psychology and has received more than 10 consecutive years of research funding from the National Institute of Mental Health. Her research and teaching have been recognized with numerous honors, including, in 2000, the American Psychological Association's Templeton Prize in Positive Psychology, and in 2008, the Society for Experimental Social Psychology's Career Trajectory Award. It is a very impressive vita and adds tremendous credibility to her ideas.

The third reason why this is an impressive book is the fact that you really get a close-up and personal look at the kind of research she and her colleagues do. If you enjoy reading books that are deeply entrenched in significant, worthwhile, and results-oriented research, this is an excellent one. Of course, when your book depends on research from your own lab, this would be a natural and expected outcome.

The fourth reason why this is an impressive book is Fredrickson's writing. She uses the language effectively, and writing for the general public, it is accessible and enjoyable. I will cite just one sentence (one that I just love!) to give you an example: "Through the mere act of ranking others [she is talking here about making social comparisons], greed slithers in to create a false social topography that utterly denies the inherent sameness and oneness across all people" (p. 140). Not just any author can put words together so effectively.

The fifth reason why I found this book impressive is her list of "Recommended Readings." Although there are only thirteen books listed, the choices are truly outstanding. I wish the list had been much longer. To suggest that readers read Barbara Ehrenreich's Bright-Sided: How the Relentless Promotion of Positive Thinking Has Undermined America (NY: Metropolitan Books, 2009) is an excellent one. I loved Ehrenreich's book, and you can read my review of it at Amazon.com.

There is a sixth reason I liked this book, too. It is the practical nature of her work. Many of the ideas Fredrickson writes about are subjective--often ephemeral--in nature. But she concretizes them for readers by providing specific, well-described, tangible methods to experience them, get in touch with them, analyze them, and evaluate them. At times, this book almost becomes as much a workbook as an idea book. Also, the numerous examples she uses throughout the book have the same effect; they bring her ideas down to reality and allow readers to relate directly to them.

A seventh reason why I liked this book may not relate at all to many who read this review. I am always on the lookout for information I can use (after gettsing permission, of course) in my college textbook, Communicating Effectively, 10e (McGraw-Hill, 2012). Let me offer you two examples of material I located in Fredrickson's book. The first has to do with the relationship of love to nonverbal communication:

"Love . . . is characterized by four distinct nonverbal cues. The first cue, not surprisingly, is how often you and the other person each smile at each other, in the genuine, eye-crinkling mannter. A second cue is the frequency with which you each use open and friendly hand gestures to refer to each other, like your outstretched palm. . . . A third cue is how often you each lean in toward each other, literally bringing your hearts closer together. The fourth cue is how often you each nod your head, a sign that you affirm and accept each other" (p. 69).

The second example of material I located in Fredrickson's book that I may use in the new edition of my college textbook is a description of what it means to be wise. Now I cannot write out the entire description because it is fairly lengthy for this review, but here are the first two sentences: "Imagine having at your fingertips all the knowledge and experience to allow you to properly discern which of the many paths ahead of you to take. Imagine how it would feel to so readily grasp just the right thing to do and the right way to do it" (p. 81). If you think of beginning college students reading this, you can see its relevancy.

There are other reasons why I liked this book, but you get the point. I have not read her previous book, Positivity (Three Rivers Press, 2009), but based on what I found here--the great treasure I discovered--I will look forward to reading it.

The Phantom Army of Alamein: The Men Who Hoodwinked Rommel, by Rick Stroud

In 1940 a group of artists, sculptors, film makers, theatre designers and set painters came together to form the Camouflage Unit. Led by Major Geoffrey Barkas and including among their number the internationally renowned stage magician Jasper Maskelyne, the unit's projects became a crucial battlefield weapon. At the siege of Tobruk the unit made a vital desalination plant appear to have been destroyed by enemy bombers; from then on they used their storytelling skills to weave intricate webs of deception, making things appear that weren't actually there, and things that were, disappear, to deceive the enemy. Their stage was the enormous, flat and almost featureless Western Desert.

The unit's schemes were so successful that in August 1942 the Unit was ordered by General Montgomery to come up with a way to hide the preparations for the Battle of Alamein, the biggest battle the 8th Army had ever fought. 'Operation Bertram' was born. In six short weeks two divisions, with armour, field guns and supporting vehicles, were conjured from the sand, while real tanks and lethal twenty-five pound field guns vanished from sight. Then, on the eve of the battle, the unit performed the biggest conjuring trick in military history. Right in front of the German's eyes they made 600 tanks disappear and reappear fifty miles away disguised as lorries. Rommel had been bamboozled by an army made of nothing but string and straw and bits of wood.

The Phantom Army of Alamein tells for the first time the full story of how some of Britain's most creative men put down their brushes, pencils and cameras to join the rest of the world in the fight against the Nazis and played a vital role in the winning of the war.

This is a wonderful book: charming, fascinating, crammed full of extraordinary nuggets of information, and containing a wide cast of largely unknown heroes and colourful characters, whose camouflaging feats scored a number of successes ... Stroud has interviewed survivors and scoured archives, leaving no stone unturned. The book is also beautifully illustrated, with original sketches and documents ... The result is a gem of a book and a classic of its kind James Holland, Literary Review In The Phantom Army of Alamein, Rick Stroud has illuminated the shadowy antics of this little-recognised outfit during the battle of El Alamein. Deception and Camouflage in the Western Desert
By James D. Crabtree
During WWII the campaign in North Africa saw German, Italian and British forces locked into a struggle along the Mediterranean coast. Both sides had limited resources in this fight and little space to maneuver. In this environment the British almost accidentally created and employed their own Camouflage Unit, an entity which would evolve throughout nearly two years of war.

The men of the Unit were artists, film makers, regular army solders and, in one case, a stage magician. They performed virtual miracles with very little: artillery positions, tanks and railheads were faked and on the other hand tanks were turned into trucks and airfields were turned into towns. The bohemians of the Camouflage Units had to not only create elaborate fake installations and to hide ships at Tobruk but they had to also integrate themselves into a hide-bound staff system and to figure out how to train the common Tommy on the importance of camouflage and how to do it. Stroud's book really does do the topic justice and makes what could be a very boring book a fascinating study, including as it does personal anecdotes of many of the camouflage experts. Well worth reading, especially if you are a student of the Desert War.

Illustrated with excellent reproduced sketches, photos and maps.

The B-26 Marauder was a formidable weapon in the campaign to defeat Hitler's armies, and, in the words of his first copilot, "Louis Rehr "was the best there was" flying it. This memoir, which benefits from forty years of research on the combat history of the B-26, contributions from comrades, and an extensive collection of rare photographs, describes Rehr's experiences, including five night-bombing missions he volunteered to fly in 1944 and accounts of attacks by Me-262 jets in late April of 1945. Rehr, a squadron commander with the 323rd Bombardment Group, earned 12 air medals, five battle stars, two Distinguished Flying Crosses, and the Croix de Guerre with Silver Star.

"Well written...recommend[ed]." --Air Power History

"Solid...Rehr's book certainly resonates with more restraint, responsibility, and vision than most pilot memoirs...the author, assisted by his wife, has turned in work as meritorious as his service in the skies over Europe in 1944-45. --Stone & Stone Second World War Books

"Rehr has a smooth writing style and manages to describe the interior of a Parisian brothel with the same candor as he does dodging Axis flak at 13,000 ft. Rehr does an excellent job of describing the devastating capabilities of Germany's Me-262 jet...excellent photographs...each image has been carefully chosen to punctuate the commentary leaving nothing to the imagination...a fast-paced read with excellent insights to the leadership personality and the performance of a thoroughbred medium bomber. Look for some great commentary on the Ardennes Offensive, D Day's aftermath, and Adolf Galland's JV 44." --Dave 'Prophet' Williams, The WWII Aviation Booklist

Great read. Couldn't put it down
By Terry G
I've read many books about WWII, but this one is different. The author engaged me with a very person down to earth story. No bragging or exaggeration. Simply told from a first person point of view. A straight forward account of a humble man who was also an exceptional pilot.

My only regret is I never had a chance to meet Lou Rehr

Enlightening: Letters 1946 - 1960, by Isaiah Berlin

'People are my landscape', Isaiah Berlin liked to say, and nowhere is the truth of this observation more evident than in his letters. He is a fascinated watcher of human beings in all their variety, and revels in describing them to his many correspondents. His letters combine ironic social comedy and a passionate concern for individual freedom. His interpretation of political events, historical and contemporary, and his views on how life should be lived, are always grounded in the personal, and his fiercest condemnation is reserved for purveyors of grand abstract theories that ignore what people are really like.

This second volume of Berlin's letters takes up the story when, after war service in the United States, he returns to life as an Oxford don. Against the background of post-war austerity, the letters chart years of academic frustration and self-doubt, the intellectual explosion when he moves from philosophy to the history of ideas, his growing national fame as broadcaster and lecturer, the publication of some of his best-known works, his election to a professorship, and his reaction to knighthood.

These are the years, too, of momentous developments in his private life: the bachelor don's loss of sexual innocence, the emotional turmoil of his father's death, his courtship of a married woman and transformation into husband and stepfather. Above all, these revealing letters vividly display Berlin's effervescent personality - often infuriating, but always irresistible.

Review

"He was one of the greatest talkers—lecturer, broadcaster, raconteur—who has ever lived. . . . Superbly edited and annotated . . . these extraordinary letters, transcribed with great difficulty and care, by those attuned in every sense to their author and accustomed to his ways, replicate to an extraordinary degree that torrential conversation with its preternatural mix of gossip, philosophy, and politics."  —Washington Times

About the Author
Isaiah Berlin (1909–1997) was a noted political philosopher and is widely regarded as one of the leading liberal thinkers of the 20th century. He was awarded the Erasmus, Lippincott, and Agnelli prizes for his contributions to philosophy.

A connoisseur of personalities
By John F. Leamons
Henry Hardy and Jennifer Holmes have done a fine job putting together this second volume of Isaiah Berlin's letters, covering the period 1946 to 1960. Apparently, they have published 20-25 percent of the material from this period. That must be about right, because (a) at about 850 pages the volume makes for a pleasant weekend's reading and (b) the weaker letters, of which there are not many, are only just worth including. The editorial material is informative, yet suitably sparse and unobtrusive. There are very few typos in this fat book.

Berlin belongs, with Plato, Leibniz and Hume, to that select group of philosophers one wouldn't mind meeting, were it possible to resurrect them. Of course, Berlin, unlike the other three, was by no means a great philosopher, if indeed he can be called a philosopher at all. What he was, without doubt, was a supremely gifted gossip, able, as Heine was, to gossip well about philosophers, both the living and the dead. He was interested in people and in how ideas made them better, or worse, than they otherwise might have been. He was in fact a connoisseur of personalities and could size one up almost at a glance. Meeting Nixon at a party in 1958, Berlin required no time at all to see what others needed decades to figure out, namely, that Nixon was "a most shifty, vulgar, dishonest and repellent human being." Because Berlin was not a proper philosopher himself, he wasn't much good at assessing the merits of philosophers as philosophers, as opposed to assessing the influence of their ideas on personalities. For example, he judged (at various times) that J.L. Austin was the cleverest man he had ever known (or the second cleverest, after Keynes). But Berlin knew Popper and Russell, and it is pretty easy to see that, in order of increasing cleverness, the correct sequence is Austin, Keynes, Popper and, enjoying a commanding lead, Russell.

These are entertaining letters. They reveal a great deal about the people Berlin knew, if one allows for Berlin's biases. And they reveal even more about Berlin himself, a very odd bird. His interests were confined almost exclusively to personalities. He appears to have been largely blind to the aesthetic qualities of the natural world and, for a clever man alive in a great age of natural science, astonishingly incurious about physical theory. As these letters show, Berlin was very close to his father, whom he claims to have regarded as a younger brother, and deeply attached to that truly outsized personality, Maurice Bowra. What they also show is that, in one respect at least, Berlin was miles beyond most philosophers: his appreciation for the great variety of human personalities enabled him to see that any attempt to press people into a "rational" society is bound to result in a great deal of breakage.

With luck we'll have the next volume of letters in two or three years.

More fascinating Isaiah Berlin letters
By Ronald H. Clark
This is the successor volume to the superb collection covering Berlin letters from 1928-1946.The editors, Henry Hardy and Jennifer Holmes, inform us that because of the heavier volume of letters IB wrote during the postwar period until his death in 1997, they are now projecting at least two more volumes to follow. The same extraordinary editorial dilgence manifested in the prior volume is demonstrated once again. Every letter is annotated with notes (placed fortunately at the base of the page) identifying individuals, publications, and activities referenced in the letter so that the reader knows exactly the context within which IB was writing. This volume is different in that the editors have not printed many letters due to the increased volume of correspondence. These letters tend to be longer than in the previous volume due to IB's discovery of the dictating machine. Some of them go on for 6 or more pages; but the letters now reflect much more how IB spoke (such as in the Jahanbegloo interviews), as well as some of his customary disorgnization when lecturing. IB's enormous range of interests is well represented: everything from weighty opinions on political theorists to music, Israel, Russian intellectual history and juicy Oxford gossip. His wide range of acquaintances also is evident: H.L.A. Hart, Felix Frankfurter, Ben Cohen, Katherine Graham of the Washington Post, Maurice Bowra, E.H. Carr, Joseph Alsop, and Irving Kristol to name just a few. We also learn why IB published relatively little during his lifetime: for him to sit down and write was virtually an ordeal, intensified by his perpetual disorganization and practice of overcommitment to engagements. His lectures, according to him, were often disasters, an opinion not frequently shared by his audience, although his inability to maintain eye contact with anyone other that the back wall of the lecture hall must have been difficult to accept.

The book is organized chronologically with sections keyed to where IB was during a particular period (Oxford [New College and All Souls]; visits to Harvard, Chicago and New York), or significant events in his life such as his marriage, designation as Chichele Professor, and knighthood. Much of his substantive intellectual history interests are reflected in the letters, which adds context to his published work on these topics. When he is critical of someone, he lays out his reasons (e.g., Isaac Deutscher, G.D.H. Cole, Rowse, Mortimer Adler, Hannah Arendt, and Dean Acheson). He also explains why he likes certain folks such as Edmund Wilson, B. Berenson, and Trevor-Roper. These letters were not meant for publication so they are extremely candid and open; historians of the future will decry the introduction of email and the telephone which will probably largely extinguish the existence of correspondence as a research source.

While extremely lengthy (700 or so pages), and sometimes a bit repetitive, the letters have an unique ability to place the reader into the context during which IB was writing. We learn also some of IB's feet of clay: his proclivity for affairs with married women (Jenifer Hart and his wife being the prime examples), that he sometimes lied in his letters, and that he was somewhat insecure as surprising as that may appear. The letters are supported by four interesting appendices; 42 photographic plates and other illustrations; a biographical glossary of the leading individuals who appear in the letters; an index to the sources of the correspondence and a 37 page index. Also of extreme value is a 17-page chronology of Berlin's activities between 1946 and 1960. The editors have scored two out of two bull's eyes with the first two volumes; the prospect of at least two more tasty morsils is enticing.

The information is presented in a concise and easily accessible manner
By Madlien
The information is presented in a concise and easily accessible manner. This book was suggested reading at the Army Trauma Training Course at Ryder in Miami. I found it to be a perfect reference and easily carried overseas during deployment. I also use it as a reference in my civilian trauma practice.

Lucretia and the Kroons (Kindle Single), by Victor LaValle

From one of the most acclaimed young writers of fiction in America today comes a fast-paced and fantastical novella about a young girl’s journey into a dark netherworld to find her missing best friend. This eBook edition contains an exclusive excerpt from Victor LaValle’s new novel The Devil in Silver, about which Gary Shteyngart raves, “Literary horror just found a new master.”

Lucretia’s best friend and upstairs neighbor Sunny—a sweet pitbull of a kid, even as she struggles with a mysterious illness—has gone missing. The only way to get her back is for Lucretia to climb the rickety fire escape of their Queens tenement and crawl through the window of apartment 6D, portal to a vast shadowland of missing kids ruled by a nightmarish family of mutants whose designs on the children are unknown. Her search for Sunny takes Lucretia through a dark fantasyland where she finds lush forests growing from concrete, pigeon-winged rodents, and haunted playgrounds. Her quest ultimately forces her to confront the most frightening specter of all: losing, forever, the thing you love the most.

Lucretia and the Kroons is a dazzlingly imaginative adventure story and a moving exploration of the power of friendship and the terror of loss. This all-new novella serves as the perfect companion piece to The Devil in Silver, a thrillingly suspenseful work of literary horror that continues the story of Lucretia.

Advance praise for The Devil in Silver

“The Devil in Silver is the rare work that takes seemingly disparate parts and brings them together seamlessly into something entirely original. There is madness here, and it is infused with brilliance, and the result is a story that is as illuminating as it is entertaining.”—Mat Johnson, author of Pym

Amazon.com Review
"Being young doesn't protect you. Horrors come for kids, too" is a lesson Lucretia "Loochie" Gardner learns the hard way in this gripping novella. Loochie is a plucky 12-year-old from Queens living in an apartment complex rife with rumored creatures from the underworld. She struggles to come to terms with her best friend Sunny's ongoing battle with cancer, as the two have been inseparable for years. When Sunny returns home from her latest round of treatment, the girls make a plan to hang out at Loochie's--without parental supervision. But Sunny doesn't show, and Loochie dives into twisted waters in her quest to find her best friend. This fantastical tale by widely-praised novelist Victor LaValle is about children, but markedly for grownups. The author writes as though he too has faced the sobering horrors that childhood can contain. LaValle allows Loochie's heroism real complexity. Encounters with demented crackheads, winged rats and haunted playgrounds push Loochie to confront her many fears, but none are quite as scary as knowing she may lose Sunny forever. --Raya Jalabi

Well-Written and Emotional
By Jaidis Shaw
Lucretia "Loochie" Gardner is your average twelve-year-old living in Queens. While her best friend Sunny is away receiving treatments for her illness, Loochie is left feeling alienated and alone. She struggles with issues that all young girls go through: fitting in at school, puberty, appearances. So when Sunny finally returns home, Loochie is determined to have fun to make up for their lost time together. That is, until Sunny goes missing and Loochie must find the courage to face the Kroons in apartment 6D and rescue her friend.

Once Loochie enters apartment 6D, she finds herself face-to-face with one of the Kroons. Monsters that are notorious for taking children and burning them. Freeing herself, she runs deeper into the apartment only to find herself in a park, complete with grass, tall trees and even a playground. Running for her life and trying to make sense of her surroundings, Loochie is focused on finding Sunny who she knows is far to weak from her treatments to survive. Imagine Loochie's surprise when Sunny is the one to find her with the help of an unexpected friend.

Lucretia and the Kroons is a well-written short story that is ultimately a story about love and learning to deal with loss. Victor LaValle does a wonderful job showing the reader the emotions Loochie is going through and the ways that she learns to deal with her loss.

This story is listed as a horror but I would personally classify it as a dark fantasy instead because I found the dark elements rather tame to be a horror.

I received a copy of Lucretia and the Kroons via NetGalley when asked by Random House Publishing for an honest review.

A fine balance of creepiness and honest emotion
By TChris
Consider, if you will, Lucretia Gardner. (I begin with these words because I was hearing Rod Serling's narrative voice while I read this novella.) Lucretia lives in Queens. She just turned twelve. She wants to spend time with her best (and only) friend, Sunny, a girl who is dying of cancer. Apartment 6D (according to Lucretia's older brother) is occupied by the remnants of a deformed and rotting family of crack-addicted child snatchers called the Kroons. Are the Kroons the invention of an older brother who wants to scare his sister, or do they exist? Lucretia learns the answer to that question when her mother and brother leave her alone to spend some time with Sunny.

Victor LaValle writes twisted, nontraditional versions of horror stories. His monsters often behave in surprisingly human ways. Despite the monstrous appearance of the Kroons, there's a sweetness to the story and a large dose of gentle humor (including the suggestion that Shea Stadium is actually Heaven). This might be the only story you'll read in which children smoking cigarettes is a good thing.

As LaValle demonstrated in The Devil in Silver, true horror lies not in the supernatural but in the tangible world. In Lucretia and the Kroons, it is the horror of childhood cancer, of saying goodbye to a friend who will never grow up. While LaValle achieved a greater degree of poignancy in The Devil in Silver, this story offers another fine balance of creepiness and honest emotion, showcased by characters who are original and sympathetic.

Scary and Bizarre rolled into one.
By Kristin @Blood,Sweat and Books
Lucretia and the Kroons is a book I actually read last year. Due to its entirely bizarre plot and my feelings being in a state of confusion I chose to not review the book at the time. Recently however, I decided to reread this Novella and give it another shot. Here's my thoughts:

Lucretia and the Kroons can only be described as Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland meets Stephen King's insert book of choice. To put it bluntly this Novella will screw with your mind. I've read this twice now and I'm still not entirely sure if events happened the way I read or if I'm trying to somehow formulate some semblance of a story to cover my confusion. Of course thinking about it further this is probably the intent to begin with. Is Lucretia actually seeing these things and going through all these horrific experiences or is she just trying to come to grips with a reality that is less than ideal? If someone figures it out, please let me know.

One thing I will say that Lucretia and the Kroons has going for it is the Horror element. This book was scary and gory and satisfied my cravings for things that go bump in the night. As a Horror book I loved this story. The Kroons were terrifying and actually had me holding onto my throat in disgust at places. I also feel that the writing was good despite my misgivings about the story. I'm tempted to read the companion to this book The Devil In Silver but don't know if I can handle another trip down the rabbit hole aka the mind of Victor Lavelle.

Overall, Lucretia and the Kroons is a well written if not bizarre little horror tale. Like I said above I've read this twice and I'm still not sure what I read so maybe you'll take my recommendation to read this with a grain of salt. However, I urge you to at least give this Novella a shot even if you just borrow it from someone. The Horror in this story is superb and I really feel that the Authors creativeness with the world deserves recognition. With that being said, I will be rating Lucretia and the Kroons ★★★.

About the Author
Andrew Burke is an Australian poet who started out in the mid-sixties as a 'beat' poet in response to Kerouac, Ginsberg, Ferlinghetti, et al. Since then he has dabbled in a million styles, and written in many genre - short stories, plays, songs, literary journalism and criticism, etc. To this day he believes you can write poetry in all genre, not just verse. He has had six books published, and teaches at Edith Cowan University at times, where he is also writing a novel for his PhD. His former wife, three children, daughter-in-law and two grandchildren also feature in his work.

A significant step backwards from the previous edition, with less content and inferior maps
By Bryce
The 2012 version of this book is some 60 pages shorter than the previous 2008 version (368 pages as compared to 428 pages--a difference that is actually much larger than it appears when you strip away sections on culture, history, and language and only focus on the travel guide sections--276 pages of travel coverage in 2008 to 205 pages in the new version), and in many instances the loss in coverage is substantial.

Take the city of Qeshm, for example: in the 2008 version LP lists 7 hotels, 2 restaurants, and a money changer (very important as you get a 20% better rate than banks offer); in the 2012 version (page 271, viewable in Amazon's "look inside" feature), however, there is only one hotel, one restaurant, and no money changers or banks listed. The rest of the information on Qeshm island is clearly based almost exclusively on tourism information provided by a local tourist/development organization (the Avaye Tabiate Paydar Institute), which may be very helpful but doesn't really meet the standard of truly unbiased, honest, and independently-researched advice I expect from LP. This is a major downgrade, but rather typical. The story in nearby Bandar-Abbas is similar: there is no information on where the inter-city bus station is located, and no notation on the map as to where it might be... even though the 2008 edition clearly showed this information. Arriving at a bus station at 6 in the morning and having no idea where the station is relative to the rest of the city is not fun, but it's especially frustrating when you later discover having the previous edition of the guidebook would have solved this problem. These examples are quite typical, and the removal of such important information is difficult to justify.

In other instances, the information just completely misses the mark. An example of this would be the walking tour in Yazd. While it seems like a great idea, the map and the locations marked are not accurate, and actually trying to follow the walking directions or route will lead to frustration as things are not where they are claimed.

A significant part of the problem is that there has been a major change in authors between the two versions: Mark Elliot was responsible for the chapters on Western and Northeastern Iran in 2008, and Andrew Burke covered the rest; in the 2012 version Mark Elliot is out, and new authors Virginia Maxwell (Central Iran and the Persian Gulf) and Iain Shearer (Western and Northeastern Iran) have taken over all coverage outside of Tehran and Southeastern Iran. This has led to not only a dip in quantity, but also a dip in quality: much of the 'new' content appears to be little more than regurgitations of tours offered by local tour agencies. This is unfortunate, but probably an unavoidable trend in guidebook writing. The decrease in quality is so severe that even a Iranian hotelier who is prominently featured in LP--and is thanked in the credit--wholeheartedly agreed that the previous edition was superior. Apparently the coordinating author (Mr. Burke) wasn't able to spend more than a few weeks in the country for this edition, and the contributing authors were essentially parachuted in to provide quick coverage of the country. While this explains the shoddy coverage and the tendency for the book to mimic tours that local agencies and guesthouses offer, it is pretty dreadful.

It is also quite interesting that despite the author change, much of the text remains word-for-word identical to the 2008 text, even in the sections that supposedly have completely different authors and/or were previously penned by Mark Elliot. I'm not sure how it possible, either morally or legally, for the exact same text to be attributed to two different people, but apparently that is what LP would have us believe.

------------COSTS, PRICES, AND DEVALUATION OF THE RIAL----------------
As others have noted, the Rial has crashed in the aftermath of Western sanctions, resulting in prices being around one-third of what they used to be. This makes the Lonely Planet prices way out of whack, as they decided to price everything in US dollars and not Rials in this edition (they made this decision because US dollar pricing was seen as less susceptible to inflation, which typically was 20% or more per year). So in order to figure out what things should cost, you have to convert from LP's US-dollar prices to Rials using the exchange rate LP uses, and then maybe add a little bit for inflation. The net result is that things cost about one-third as many US dollars as LP quotes. Unfortunately, a few unscrupulous businessmen (I'm looking at you, Vali) have decided to use LP's US-dollar pricing, which means that they charge about three times what they used to charge before the devaluation (e.g., the LP quotes $10, which used to be maybe 120,000 Rials, but now they charge 360,000 rials, which is still $10). Anyway, things should be much cheaper than they appear in LP. If they are the same price as LP lists, then you are almost certainly being taken advantage of.

Be careful
By Xu Nuo
I have just come back from my two weeks trip in IRAN. This is the worst lonely planet I have used, and I cannot refrain from making some complaints. This book is abusing the legacy of lonely planet.
- Too much mistaken information. I have encountered a dozen of mistakes during my short trip. For example, this book said Tochal telecabin closed on Mondays, but actually it is Sundays; it said Vank cathedral closed on Friday mornings, but it is Friday afternoons; it said Shiraz to Kerman took 12 hours bus, but it is 8 hours. Indeed, Iran is a changing country for travelers, such as in tickets price, but I checked with local people, many points in this guide have been wrong since 2011.
- There are minor mistakes in editing and grammar, which I have not seen in any other lonely planet guides before. For example, on the same page, Khomeini has two different dates of death: 3 June and 4 June. Much information is only copied and pasted from earlier version, but has not been kept consistent with the latest update.
- USD labeling simply inflates the price of everything. Despite IRR depreciation, many hotels recommended by this guide use the USD price consistent with this book, while inflation in Iran has not been so significant. You can find many low key accommodations and restaurants at much lower price, as long as they are not recommended by lonely planet.
- Its country insight and background information are very fluffy. It does not look into the reality of Iran and somehow worsen the misunderstanding. Neither have I found any interesting articles and columns as I have found in other lonely country guides. I think Wikipedia and wikitravel work much better.

If you are making a trip in Iran, I hope you can exercise some caution in using this book. Also, Iranians are among the most friendly on earth, if you need more accurate information, check with the locals.

Good hints, bad maps
By HansBlog
Where does the bazaari take lunch? Where do the locals buy ice cream and rice cream (bastani and faludeh)? What's the best time of day to see the stained-glass windows at the mosque? These and thousands of other questions are reliably answered in the Lonely Planet Iran. The book opens up the country to the independent traveler and helps enormously in exploring Iran without tour groups or guides. It has good hints for visa extensions, means of transport, and I also liked the suggestions for hotels and restaurants. For these parts the book easily earns five stars, especially as the Bradt Guide, by comparison, disappoints thoroughly. But the Lonely Planets gathers weak points as well:

The new 2012 graphic design in the introductory part looks more magazine-like, more colourful - and certainly less organized. The newly designed city maps are a desaster: Earlier Lonely Planet guides had city maps that gave you easy orientation in any city you arrived; the new maps remind of conductor paths drawn with a trembling hand; you can't even guess the exact location of hotels or sights. The map for Yazd is unusable, for instance, but other maps aren't much better. Nobody at the publisher ever considered the re-designed maps with a practical traveler's eye. I suggest using offline maps in your mobile phone or using the online maps service by Iranian mobile phone companies - and you'll never get lost again, not even when stumbling out of the Bazar-e Bozorg at a gate you've never seen before.

Very unusual: Because of the Iranian currency's drastic decline, most prices in the country are considerably lower than quoted in the guide book. At least for Central Iran the authors describe public transport with high detail (" three blocks with the shared taxi, then three blocks walking in northern direction, then at the gas station...") - but if you earn your money outside of Iran, a privately chartered taxi "dar baste" is now almost as cheap as a shared taxi used to be.

The "Farsi" language guide from the same publisher is a good, but not flawless, companion to the guide book.

UPDATE:

In May 2014, i went for another tourist trip to Iran, this time to other regions. I still had to use the 2012 LP, because an update is only planned for 2016 (but there will be a 2014 LP about Middle East including Iran).

But even in 2014, the 2012 LP guide worked mostly very well, almost no entry was outdated. This time i also successfully used some LP maps (even though i loathe them in my main review above). Some hotels in NW-Iran do get way too much praise from LP though - best to avoid any high expectations.

The previously abysmal Bradt guide has been updated in January 2014, so i took this book to Iran too. But still the Bradt has much less practical information than the LP (especially restaurant and hotel recommendations) and the long, academic paragraphs tired me. It wasn't very helpful for my journey.

Curious: In NW-Iran, the LP shows a wrong phone number for a hotel, that's very rare. But when i called that phone number, i reached a perfectly anglophone Iranian who swiftly provided me with the correct number - it was some of the most efficient communication i'd had in Iran, and i didn't have to drink tea first.
