The Oxford History of the British Empire: Volume IV: The Twentieth Century: 004From OUP Oxford

The Oxford History of the British Empire is a major new assessment of the Empire in the light of recent scholarship and the progressive opening of historical records. From the founding of colonies in North America and the West Indies in the seventeenth century to the reversion of Hong Kong to China at the end of the twentieth, British imperialism was a catalyst for far-reaching change. The Oxford History of the British Empire as a comprehensive
study allows us to understand the end of Empire in relation to its beginnings, the meaning of British imperialism for the ruled as well as the rulers, and the significance of the British Empire as a theme in world history.

Volume IV considers many aspects of the 'imperial experience' in the final years of the British Empire, culminating in the mid-century's rapid processes of decolonization. It seeks to understand the men who managed the empire, their priorities and vision, and the mechanisms of control and connection which held the empire together. There are chapters on imperial centres, on the geographical 'periphery' of empire, and on all its connecting mechanisms, including institutions and the flow of
people, money, goods, and services. The volume also explores the experience of 'imperial subjects' - in terms of culture, politics, and economics; an experience which culminated in the growth of vibrant, often new, national identities and movements and, ultimately, new nation-states. It concludes with the
processes of decolonization which reshaped the political map of the late twentieth-century world.

Review

"Magnificent...Taken together, these books constitute an extraordinary feat of organization and scholarship, and they provide the authoritative history of the British Empire for our generation, and the essential starting point of the re-writing of that history which will take place in the next generation. Opinions differ about the British Empire; there can be no disagreement about this superb history of it." --David Cannadine in The Times Literary Supplement

"The Oxford History of the British Empire will take many years to be digested. In the meantime, its five volumes will gather little dust on library shelves. Those fortunate enough to have these books in their own library will possess a valuable publication that recommends new approaches and raises new questions about one of the greatest cultural and technological transfers that has taken place in the world during the past half millennium." --The Historian

The best overview of Empire in the 20th Century
By Lehigh History Student
The Oxford History of the British Empire edited by WM Roger Louis is an excellent compilation of top scholarship related to all aspects of the British Empire. Various authors contributed well written chapters to create an understanding of the Empire by century. Volume four is an understanding of the twentieth century and looks at the fall of the empire. The Empires performance in World War 1 and 2 are assessed in the first half and the myth of the unified empire is explored. The British Empire in World War 2 was able to harness the power of all the countries to move as a unified force but the myth of British invincibility was shattered. The promises of freedom that the allies fought for was transformed into a reality as the Dominions and Commonwealth argued for independence after the war. Some areas were granted independence very quickly after the war and British trusteeship proved unable to combat the flaring ethnic and racial tensions appearing around the world. In Asia the myth of British invincibility was destroyed by the fall of Singapore and proved that Britain as a paper tiger in the east. The empire went into severe decline with the Suez Crises and Britain's miscalculations of their position as a world power. The book does an excellent job of tying together a wide range of sources and giving a great perspective on the British Empire as a whole. It covers the areas of the globe relevant to the Empire and is very focused on the information presented. If you want to learn about any aspect of the Empire in the 20th century this is a great place to start.

From Booklist
Readers who devoured Wake (2012) will jump right into the second novel in the Watersong series as it picks up and runs. Harper is determined to find Gemma, who is realizing that being a siren is more dangerous than she imagined. The alternating narration builds suspense and allows the sisters’ individual stories and characters to develop. Harper is the levelheaded, determined older sister, while Gemma struggles with impulses and consequences. When she finally gives in to her hunger, feeding on a human heart, Gemma is horrified with herself and determined to break free, despite being overcome by her feast’s druglike positive effects (her hair, skin, and voice become even lovelier). Harper brings Gemma back to Capri, where Alex and Daniel prove to be an enticing challenge, unlike the men the sirens have encountered before. Pithy banter and humor interwoven with suspenseful supernatural and sweetly romantic elements will satisfy fans of this quick-moving, easy-to-read series. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: Hocking’s history as a self-publishing phenom made her name well-known and St. Martin’s hopes to keep it that way—massive marketing campaigns are expected. Grades 6-9. --Heather Booth

Live To Read
By Chels
Gemma is now a full-on mermaid, and she’s trying to stop her siren ways. Life is very difficult for her, but she’s moving forward at a good pace. Her sister Harper, with the trusty sidekick Daniel, is trying to find out where the other mermaids have taken her.

This is the second book to the Watersong story, and it was better than the first. In Wake, I was really bored and skipped many parts, but in Lullaby I only did some of the time. It still didn’t captivate me; I said to myself “get on with it”, but the characters made the ride enjoyable. Gemma is strong willed and a great lead. In the first book, I looked past her. She was annoying to me. In this book she has backbone and really stands up for what she believes in. That’s the type of character I like: someone who can overcome problems to the best of their ability while learning in the process! Harper and Daniel were good to read too, but those were the parts I skipped over. I wanted to learn more about Gemma and mermaids; I’m glad my questions were answered. If I don’t like a plot, the characters have to keep me going; that’s what Hocking did. I stayed to the end of the book because I wanted to know what will happen to Gemma. She really grew on me and I rooted for her throughout the whole book. Again, it was a little slow, but with a tad bit of skimming - it was good for me. If you’re wishy-washy about Wake, I say give this book a try. It’s definitely a step up, and I recommend it.

Better, but some mindless actions and flat characters frustrate
By titania86
Gemma has abandoned her family to run off with sirens Penn, Lexie, and Thea in order to keep her family safe and stay alive. She wants nothing to do with them, but doesn't want to put her family in danger. Avowed to punish herself, Gemma refuses to give in to her siren desires and becomes weak and starved. Her deep and strong urges become harder to ignore as she becomes more and more weak. Over time, she changes from the girl she was at home, hard at work and innocent. Harper is frantic to find Gemma and take care of her father. She picks up the pieces Gemma left behind: Alex, her and Gemma's dad, and dealing with the death of a close family friend. If Harper finds her, will Gemma still be the same girl that left? Or has she changed drastically because of the evil nature of the mythological creature she is now?

Wake, the first book in the series, was ok, but it definitely had its flaws. Lullaby is a slight improvement. Gemma is slightly less annoying. The first book had her acting quite childishly and annoying, making me relate to her more mature sister Harper. This installment has her coming to grips with her new state as a siren and trying to abstain from the pleasurable aspects and the more monstrous aspects of siren nature. She pushes the limits of what her body can take to keep her sense of morality, even if her nature tends towards evil. The other sirens are more fleshed out than the last book. Penn views humans as toys to be used and discarded or as food. She is incredibly manipulative, jealous, and vindictive. Lexie proves to be the nicest, extending advice and help to Gemma. I find her the most interesting because despite her evil nature, she manages to still be good, giving some shades of grey to the previously black and white world. Harper is an awesome character, even if she isn't mystical or mythical. She stays home to pick up the pieces Gemma left behind and works relentlessly to find Gemma. The only annoying thing is that she keeps trying to push Daniel away because of what she perceives to be what is right. I'm fairly certain they will end up together, so this predictable back and forth is unnecessary.

I really enjoyed the horror aspects of this book. For a romantic and mythical story, there is a surprising amount of blood and gore. I would have thought this would put the target audience off, but the reception for the first book was pretty positive The stilted conversations that annoyed me in the first novel are much improved here. They flow more naturally and made the book more engaging and made me want to read it. There was one point in the book where the the characters act without thinking about the ramifications and then just sit around doing nothing. Very frustrating, but it was the only glaring flaw in an otherwise enjoyable narrative.

Lullaby is a decided improvement over Wake. I enjoyed the story and the deeper, more complex characters. I am interested to see what happens in the next book, Tidal.

Lullaby Sucks You Under and Never Let's Go
By Amazon Customer
I really enjoyed this sequel to Wake. This book picks up right where we left off. Gemma has gone with the sirens, while Harper, Alex, and Daniel are left to face with the aftermath and finding Gemma. While most authors can't effectively do third person POV with alternating perspectives, Amanda Hocking handles it extremely well, and the story flows very nicely. There was never a time where I was confused or bored with the story. What I find even more amazing is that Ms. Hocking has created each character with a unique voice and personality. Sometimes when an author writes alternating POV's, the voices sound the same, but that is not the case in this book.

In Wake, I never felt that true connection to Harper, Alex, or Daniel, but that completely disappeared in this novel. Harper and Alex work extremely hard to find Gemma, and it was refreshing to see the characters develop into strong leads. There are a lot of tense moments in this novel, and the characters handle themselves in the way you would expect. None of the characters are these amazing, heroic people. They are ordinary characters faced with an unbelievable task, and that is what makes them extraordinary. My one complaint...there wasn't nearly enough Daniel. Even though Daniel wasn't very prominent in the last book either, I still fell in love with him. However, he isn't in this book nearly as much as he should in my opinion. Nevertheless, the scenes he is in, well let's just say they don't disappoint. He is even sweeter and more charming, if that's even possible. One of the other stand out characters...Marcy. I love this girl! In Wake, I barely registered her, but boy does she impress in this book. I particularly loved the scene where she and Harper (mainly Marcy) were discussing the T. Rex. Here's a taste...

"'My point is that nothing is unstoppable, and the T. rex wasn't as great as he thought he was. I mean, what were those little arms for?' Marcy pulled her arms back into her sleeves, so her hands made short imitation T. rex arms, and she wiggled them back and forth. 'What an idiot.'"

This just had me laughing hysterically (and she kinda has a point too).

However, this is ultimately Gemma's story, and Gemma's character grows so much in this book. Gemma is facing a constant struggle to give in to her siren nature, but she also becomes that much stronger. I loved every time she stood up to Penn, and her bonding with Thea.

The stand out part of this novel though lies in the mythology that Amanda Hocking has incorporated. I'm a sucker for any type of mythology, and Ms. Hocking just sucked me into the story with more about the siren curse and other such things.

While I really enjoyed reading this novel, there was still something missing to me. I can't quite put my finger on it, but there's just something not there. I can't wait to read the next in the series, Tidal because I love this series, and Amanda Hocking is one of my favorite authors. There are still a lot of questions that need to be answered, and I look forward to what Ms. Hocking has in store for us.

Arator, by John of Caroline Taylor

It deserves to rank among the two or three really historic contributions to political science in the United States.

—James A. Beard

This discussion of the social order of an agricultural republic is Taylor's most popular and influential work. It includes materials on the relation of agriculture to the American economy, on agriculture and politics, and on the enemies of the agrarian republic. Both statesman and farmer, Taylor is often considered the deepest thinker of all the early Virginians.

M. E. Bradford was Professor of English at the University of Dallas until his death in 1993.

Politics and farming: Old South Style
By S. H. Wells
Arator is a series of essays that link farming and American politcs. Taylor's use of farming as a vehicle to discuss politics predates a similar move made 100 years later by the Nashville Agrarians (see I'll Take My Stand). I agree with other reviewers who state that Arator no longer gives practical advice on farming. But the sections on *why* farming is important should still be read. Students of Haiti/Haitian history should also read Arator. Taylor's discussion of slavery hinges on his perceptions about the Haitian revolution. It should be noted that the essays in Arator were serially published the same year Haitians defeated the French. And Arator was first collected into book form (widely read and went through many printing runs) at approximately the same time Haiti was becoming a united nation. So students of politics, of history, of the South, and of Haiti will find something valuable between the covers.

The republican and agrarian thought of Virginia's Cato
By R. Setliff
~Arator~ is very much a distinctive "series of agricultural essays-political and practical" written by Virginia statesman and planter of the Old Republic which was first published in 1813. John Taylor, also deemed the Sage of Hazelwood, dedicates a considerable portion of this book reflecting upon the socio-economic and political order of an agrarian republic which he sought to defend. In his book Arator, John Taylor speaks to a multitude of subjects and issues. He also offers practical and perhaps dated advice on farming (i.e. manuring, livestock, draining, etc.) as well which though extraneous may be a historical curiosity to some modern readers.

To sketch a brief biography of the man, John Taylor of Caroline, in the words of M.E. Bradford, "became the classic figure of `old republican' theory: the exemplar of an almost Roman virtus, the Virginia Cato, who soldiers, enforces the law, writes in its defense and of the life it secures, and serves the state well when called to office because he has something better to do-because there are lands and people of whose good is a faithful steward." He rose to the rank of lieutenant-colonel serving in both the Continental Army and Virginia militia. He adopted the profession of his stepfather, and became an accomplished attorney. He turned his oratory abilities to the task of statesmanship and became a legislator in the Virginia House of Delegates and the United States Senate. He grew restless in the practice of law and politics and eventually retired to his plantation where he farmed. Though, he was not aloof from political concerns and discourse, as he wrote a number of books and political tracts.

John Taylor of Caroline dedicated much of his political life in defense of the Constitution as a strict constructionist and a principled republican. Likewise, he fought against the perceived depredations of the artificial aristocracy of "paper and patronage" that was wrapping itself around the edifice of the federal government like some sly serpent. He assailed the corrupting mercantilist system of patronage and privilege that the centralising nationalists sought to import from England. According to Taylor, if this moneyed oligarchy thoroughly entrenched itself than the inevitable dire results would be consolidation, empire, monopoly, special privilege, jobbery, patronage, legal plunder and theft by taxation. Taylor no doubt had nothing but disdain for Hamilton's scheming to conscript legions of children and women to work factories. He felt strongly that either imperial consolidation or disunion would be the end result, and in any case, it entailed the ruin of the republic. Taylor minced no words in his vehement denunciations of the "paper aristocracy." Taylor saw this mercantilist class committed to plundering the productive agricultural, mechanical and labour interests so as to endow opulence upon the manufacturers, financiers, speculators and stock-jobbers. This scheming oligarchy driven by material avarice was hardly averse to the creation of legal monopolies and the spoliation of the taxpayers so long as they were enriched through bounties, subsidies and interest from government debt. "Monarchies and aristocracies, being founded in the principle of distributing wealth by law, can only subsist by frauds and deceptions to dupe ignorance for its benefit; but in genuine republics, founded on the principle of leaving wealth to be distributed by merit and industry, these treacheries of government are treasons against nations" [p. 94]. Taylor remained a principled republican and resisted the temptation to mount a campaign of counter-plunder for the benefit of the agricultural class. Taylor surmised, "If a scheme could be contrived in favour of agriculture, similar to the protecting duty scheme in favour of manufacturers, it would enslave the farmers... The utmost favour which it is possible for a government to do for us farmers and mechanics is neither to help nor hurt us" [p. 95]. Thus, in his political capacity as a Senator who championed the agricultural and landed interests, he did fall prey to the philosophy of legal plunder, but preferred laissez-faire instead. Though, he recognised the need for a civil framework to protect property while prosecuting the twin depredations of force and fraud. He was eerily prophetic in surmising that the usurpations of this plundering class would ultimately led to civil war: "...it will begat new usurpations of internal power over persons and property, and these will begat dissolution of the union." Taylor committed his pen and oratory skills to confronting such despotism, and wrote a number of treatises, political tracts, and made some poignant filibuster speeches as a legislator.

History tends to vindicate Taylor's concerns in my humble opinion. Taylor though was a nimble Unionist, and saw it necessary to preserve the liberties of the people in their natural communities with the concert of thirteen separate commonwealths tethered together by friendship, mutual consent and the fraternal bonds cultivated during the Revolution. But just as the John Adams-the quintessential Yankee had spoken of States as being "nations," Taylor no less considered Virginia to be his country. One must surely be a Virginian, Marylander or Georgian as they are an American; and this was the understanding of patriotism that our forefathers embraced and espoused. In the early 1800s, John Taylor alongside John Randolph of Roanoke rose to become sectional leaders of the Tertium Quids (i.e. Latin for the Third Thing.) They represented the extreme conservative wing of the Jeffersonian Republicans. The Tertium Quids saw themselves as authentic expositors of classical republicanism, and their principles compelled them to oppose the artificial aristocracy and the compromises of both Jefferson and Madison, et al. within their own ranks. They were especially averse to the machinations of the High Federalists (i.e. the Essex Junto, Fisher Ames, Aaron Burr) who sought to disrupt and fragment the Union.

Taylor, the leader of the pastoral republicans looked to certain classical exemplars like Cato the Censor. Likewise, as an Old Whig he was no doubt influenced by Cato's De Agri Cultura and by Virgil's Georgics. These classical works connect virtue and the proper order of human life with the discipline of the farmer and husbandman. For this reason, Taylor tended to treat agriculture as a species of moral instruction. Moreover, agriculture represented a noble and honorable calling to Taylor. The landed farmer relied on prescriptive wisdom, experience, patience, hard work, and a profound sense of duty and reverence to the divine. Such a way of life cultivated independence which made for good solid citizens, or vir bonus-the plain good man. The Roman republic of hollowed antiquity called upon the independent freeholders-indeed farmers and yeoman-to provide for her defense. This militia consisted of citizen-soldiers which were always deemed preferable to standing armies or hired mercenaries. Taylor deemed the citizen-militia the "rock of our liberty." For Taylor, the classics offered a breadth of historical insight and wisdom, and he saw that the pursuit of empire undone the Romans. Taylor confronted the perils of slavery with surprisingly candid commentary, and like Jefferson, he saw the existence of that peculiar institution as a catalyst for sparking future conflict, and social strife. He was emboldened to admit that the continuity of slavery might very well kindle the judgment of God. "Virtue and vice are naturally and unavoidably coexistent... Perhaps the sight of slavery and its vices may inspire the mind with affection for liberty and its virtue" [p. 124]. The exploitation of slave labour by the landed interest, conversely reflected a subtle hypocrisy on the part of Taylor as he and other agrarians were so quick to condemn the spoliation and organised legal plunder perpetuated by the "paper aristocracy."

All things considered, this is a good window into John Taylor of Caroline's political thought which represents the "Old Country Whigs." His other books such as _Tyranny Unmasked_ and _New Views on the Constitution_ come highly recommended as well. If you're just looking for a cursory look at Taylor's political thought than I recommend that you check out New Views first. Historian W.A. Williams opined that Taylor made "the best case against empire as a way of life."

strictly of interest to the historian
By Eric Brown
John Taylor may be well worth studying, but this book is not the way to do it. I can't imagine why anyone would think of publishing this book again today. It was probably a great series of writings at the time, but it's long since outlived any usefulness, and it's hardly gained any historical intrigue.

Soil contamination...public lands...surface and groundwater pollution...coastal erosion...global warming. Have we reached the limits of this planet's ability to provide for us? If so, what can we do about it?

These vital questions are addressed by Jill Schneiderman in The Earth Around Us, a unique collection of thirty-one essays by a diverse array of today's foremost scientist-writers. Sharing an ability to communicate science in a clear and engaging fashion, the contributors explore Earth's history and processes--especially in relation to today's environmental issues--and show how we, as members of a global community, can help maintain a livable planet. The narratives in this collection are organized into seven parts that describe:

- Earth's time and history and the place of people in it

- Views of nature and the ethics behind our conduct on Earth

- Resources for the twenty-first century, such as public lands, healthy forests and soils, clean ground and surface waters, and fluctuating coastlines

- Ill-informed local manipulations of landscapes across the United States

- Innovative solutions to environmental problems that arise from knowledge of the interactions between living things and the Earth's air, water, and soil

- Natural and human-induced global scale perturbations to the earth system

- Our responsibility to people and all other organisms that live on Earth

Never before has such a widely experienced group of prominent earth scientists been brought together to help readers understand how earth systems function to produce our physical and biological environment. Driven by the belief that earth science is, and should be, an integral part of everyday life, The Earth Around Us empowers all of us to play a more educated and active part in the search for a sustainable future for people and other living things on our planet.

From Booklist
Roland March, on the verge of being cut loose from the Houston Police Department after suffering a personal tragedy that has affected his job performance, is given one last chance after he notices evidence of a missing female victim at a gang-related multiple-murder scene. March tries to connect the female victim with Hannah Mayhew, a teenager who performed outreach work for her church and who recently disappeared from a local mall; his superiors are unconvinced, but they agree to transfer March to the Hannah Mayhew task force. He continues to investigate the connection, working under the radar, with the help of a youth pastor, to prove his suspicions. In his personal life, March tries to reconnect with his wife, who is also suffering. Carefully drawn details of police work, well-delineated characters, multiple interesting cases, and a vivid Houston setting add to the strong mystery. --Sue OBrien

Review
"The narrative energy is relentless. The visual, cinematic style sticks to a single first-person viewpoint, a unity some contemporary thriller writers violate to their detriment. Present-tense narrative annoys some readers (including this one at times), but its sense of urgency and immediacy is effective in the March novels. Bertrand is a major crime-fiction talent--one of the best police procedural writers I've come upon in years ...." -- The Weekly Standard

From the Back Cover
A missing girl. A corrupt investigation. They thought they could get away with it, but they forgot one thing: Roland March is BACK ON MURDER

Houston homicide detective Roland March was once one of the best. Now he's disillusioned, cynical, and on his way out. His superiors farm him out on a variety of punishment details...until an unexpected break gives March one last chance to save his career. And his humanity.

All he has to do? Find the missing teenage daughter of a Houston evangelist that every cop in town is already looking for. But March has an inside track, a multiple murder nobody else thinks is connected. Battling a new partner, an old nemesis, and the demons of his past, getting to the truth could cost March everything. Even his life.

"A rogue homicide detective is assigned to a grisly murder case, and through this investigation discovers core life values that overturn his world. Bertrand's first novel is an astonishing and powerful mystery. Extremely well crafted. Highly recommended." -- Davis Bunn, bestselling author of Gold of Kings

"There's no way you're going to take your eyes off [Back on Murder] until it's finished. The story and writing is that good." -- Sigmund Brouwer, bestselling author of Broken Angel

"J. Mark Bertrand has captured the surreal world of homicide detectives with a realism and power rarely seen in fiction." -- Mark Mynheir, homicide detective and author of The Night Watchman

Back on Murder - Kindle Edition
By Craig Thompson
1. Technical: This is the kind of book the Kindle was made for. The built in dictionary allowed me to quickly understand terms such as cocobolo and the note/bookmark feature allowed me to note/review my speculations on plots and twists.

2. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and its characters. Oddly enough, I was drawn to the folks that surround him more than I was to the main character Roland March. Which shows author Bertrand's skill in creating him. Detective March seems to be a real person (another piece of lettuce trying to get through this world as georgecarlinmighthavephrasedit): petty lustful mean sad caring clueless noble brave . . . real not a cardboard cutout stereotyped action/detective hero/antihero. And in the real world, we don't like everyone. And I don't care for March. But I do like the story, I do like the writing, and I would buy another Roland March book if one shows up.

(2013 update: since I wrote this review, I've purchased and read the next two in the series. Loved them and eagerly awaiting the 4th)

Back on Murder - A most excellent Crime Novel
By SuzanR
An intelligent, powerful, gritty mystery with brilliant prose and an eye for vivid detail. The complex but appealing protagonist, Houston Police Detective Roland March is a man haunted by former triumphs and tragedies. In his attempt to solve both a murder and a missing persons case that may be connected, March is pitted against both the bad guys and his fellow police officers, and he tenaciously fights for his survival. Boasting a rich cast of compelling characters, the author weaves a complex plot and intricate subplots, exploring the depths of evil, corruption, forgiveness, and love. I eagerly await the next Roland March mystery. No serious reader of crime novels should miss this one, especially fans of authors James Lee Burke and Michael Connelly. Well done.

A pleasure to read
By Ella Ella
I got this Kindle book on a whim when it was free, and I'm now excited to buy or rent the next installment. It's not your typical murder mystery--it's more of a character study than anything else. However, the characters are interesting enough, as is the storytelling, that I didn't mind the lack of surprises or twists. I had a near 100% success rate on guessing what the reveals would be as the story went along, but that still didn't mean I had all my questions answered or knew *how* everything happened, so I still never felt cheated.

If you are an atheist or non-religious person like myself, don't let the reviews calling the book excellent Christian fiction put you off. It would have given me pause had I known the genre association before reading it, but I honestly do not see this as a Christian book at all--it's a compelling little mystery that happens to have some Christian characters and themes in it. It's a book set in Houston, Texas. It would be inauthentic and silly not to, in my opinion. At any rate, it's definitely not preachy and the main character, at least in this installment, isn't even religious. I can't speak for the rest of the series, but at least in this one, you won't be rolling your eyes nearly as much as March himself!

Delightful
By William Grimm
This is not for the jaded and cynical. However, Christmas itself is lost on those.
Be open to the heart string tugging short story and you will find this book most satisfying.
It is a collection of short stories published in newspapers and church bulletins from the last century.
I especially liked "Echo Serenade" a story of a random act of kindness, one musician to another.

Enjoyable, but loses some of the momentum of the first novel
By Amazon Customer
Overall Mel Odom continues to do a good job with this saga that touches on an area that no Realms novel has ever dealt with before. He deserves much credit for being the first author to work in this virgin territory, creating detailed pictures of the cultures and creatures that make their lives under the waves. In this second installment of the trilogy he continues to add color and depth to his characters as well as introduce a few new ones. My only regrets which keep this a 4 star review, are the few moments when I had to suspend my disbelief. For example, Jherek with the help of his new found friend the paladin launch a clumsy, hopeless attack on the HQ of a pirate, and are only saved by the good samaritan actions of another pirate. Not too believable. Jherek's sense of honor also gets a bit annoying, mainly during combat. In the naval attack on Baldurs Gate he passes up oppurtunities to strike his sauhagin foes in the back, and he shudders at the tactics his fellows use in combat because they seem "unfair" to him. In all probability Jherek should have gotten himself killed fighting the way he does. However, towards the end of book Jherek's sense of himself receives a serious blow, and he needs the help of a friend to get himself centered again. So in a sense his character retains some realism and becomes believeable. The book's pace doesn't quite match the first, but I still enjoyed reading it and look forward to the final novel.

An Admirable Job
By James Stubbs
While I can't agree with the reviewer below that Odom is better than Salvatore - he is certainly making a grab for fame. Mr. Odom has managed to make an aquatic setting actually interesting (no mean feat) and (what I imagine inspired the below review) you can actually care about the characters while most of the AD&D novel characters are complete throw-aways. I can't wait for the next one! The next Salvatore? Maybe. ... but a very fine novel in the meantime.

flat out awesome!

Just read this series -- that's all I have to say -- you MUST read this series! IMO Odom has passed Salvatore as the FR bard par excellence! This book is so rich in detail and characterization -- plus action, action, action -- and draws all the best from AD&D and the FR setting--WOW!

Realizing Utopia: The Future of International Law, by The Late Antonio Cassese

Realizing Utopia is a collection of essays by a group of innovative international jurists. Its contributors reflect on some of the major legal problems facing the international community and analyse the inconsistencies or inadequacies of current law. They highlight the elements - even if minor, hidden, or emerging - that are likely to lead to future changes or improvements. Finally, they suggest how these elements can be developed, enhanced, and brought to
fruition in the next two or three decades, with a view to achieving an improved architecture of world society or, at a minimum, to reshaping some major aspects of international dealings. Contributions to the book thus try to discern the potential, in the present legal construct of world society, that might one
day be brought to light in a better world.

As the impact of international law on national legal orders continues to increase, this volume takes stock of how far international law has come and how it should continue to develop. The work features an impressive list of contributors, including many of the leading authorities on international law and several judges of the International Court of Justice.

Review

"Realizing Utopia is a fitting memorial to Cassese. He and the other authors present a clear vision of a utopian international legal order that does full justice to the ideals and values that Cassese sought to implement in his writings and judicial decisions. This book restores idealism to a central place in the debate about the future of international law. It is essential reading for all concerned about the direction that international law will take in the twenty-first century."
-- John Dugard, The American Journal of International Law

France in Centrafrique: From Bokassa and Operation Barracude to the Days of EUFOR, by Peter Baxter

France in Centrafrique explores the pre- and post-colonial history of the Republic of Central Africa as well as giving the reader a taste of the country's involvement in WWII itself. The main focus of this volume is on Central Africa's independence and the rise to power of Jean Bedel Bokassa including the Focard network and Françafrique connections, France's military links with RCA (defense agreements), the republic's post independence military, its politics and Bokassa's coup. It takes a staggering look at Central Africa under Bokassa's leadership and the ensuing break down in its relationship with France. Operation Baracuda was the natural culmination of that soured relationship and in this book de Cherisey examines "France's last colonial expedition", the planning of the operation, its players, a step-by-step breakdown and its outcome.

To bring the reader up to speed with the RCA de Cherisey discusses the years after Bokassa, a new political rule, the effects on the army and the relationship with France all the way to Operation Almandin I, II and III. France's involvement in the RCA is deep-seated and ongoing. This book concludes with a look at Operation Boali, Bozizé's coup and the international fallout in terms of further intervention both from France and the EUFOR.

A fine overview
By B. Fairbank
I know author Peter Baxter well, and felt I had to respond to the inaccurate information in a previous review. Peter researched this book widely - to imply it was copy and pasted from Wikipedia is, frankly, libellous. The photos were sourced widely, including a number of previously unpublished images from well-known and respected photographer Yves Debay. The idea of this series is not, as some folk seem to misunderstand, to provide in-depth histories - they are short, concise and 72 pages, intended to act as well-researched, well-written and well-illustrated primers on their respective subject. Within that remit, this book packs a lot of info into its pages, combining political, social and military history to blend into a focused and tightly-organised narrative. Well done Peter!

A fine book for those looking for a jumping off point on the subject
By Mike V.
This title by Peter Baxter covers French political and military involvement in the Central African Republic from the colonial days (albeit briefly) roughly up to the present. It primarily focuses on the post-independence era from Bokassa's reign up to the EUFOR involvement.

The book is well-laid out, edited, and written, and there are plenty of illustrations. The quality is very much on par with an Osprey title, and much heavier on actual content than a typical Osprey booklet. The text is supplemented by a number of pictures, though they do seem to rely heavily on public domain contact to fill in the edges. It is by no means a bad thing, but some of the illustrations as a result are not always totally germane to the content. The pictures also tend to precede the text that they correspond with to a degree. Both of these really are minor issues, however, and by-and-large, the pictures are clearly reproduced and enhance the book's value.

The book is also a near perfect length at 80 pages (though the text is quite small). It covers relatively new territory in the world of African history but feels neither too short nor overstays its welcome. I have a feeling that were the book be longer it might lose some readers or simply run out of relevant information to cover. As it is, however, this is worth a read for African military history buffs, those interested in French involvement in Africa, or recent Central African Republic history.

Developments in the CAR written in a refreshing way.
By F.A.M. van Putten
There are dozens of French books on the history of the CAR. What is different from most (French) books on the CAR, is that the author also briefly discusses what's now the CAR in the period before the French colonisation. The red line is more or less the french influence during the colonial period and what's more important the influence during the " independence" of the CAR. (The French- Afrique of mr. Rocard).
It's refreshing to read a story written by a non Frenchman.
The book gives a rather complete summary of the political history of the CAR.
(The format of the book is different form what you would expect: it is on A4 format and has some 60 pages)
