T. Jefferson Parker: Congratulations on the new book. Or should I say books?
Alan Russell: You're right either way. Thomas & Mercer is bringing out my new novel Burning Man on the same day it is reissuing Multiple Wounds and Shame.
TJP: Why are they doing that?
AR: Don't good things come in threes?
TJP: That segues into Multiple Wounds, a novel where you feature a character that not only has multiple personalities, but personalities of Greek goddesses.
AR: I know that sounds fantastic, but many of those diagnosed with dissociative identity disorder do have larger than life personalities. For my character with DID, the emergence of those goddess alters was often a survival mechanism.
TJP: Did something inspire you to come up with such an extraordinary character?
AR: My brain started percolating when I read about this woman with DID who cried tears of blood when she became upset. That image propelled me, and the story built from there. Early in the book I knew my detective had to be confronted by this spectacle.
TJP: Men aren't good dealing with even ordinary crying. Do you like pushing the envelope of crime fiction?
AR: I do, but I should ask the same of you. Your Charlie Hood novels certainly aren't traditional mysteries, and in them you haven't felt the need to neatly tie up loose ends.
TJP: I've never been happy writing the same old, same old, and I know you aren't either. A few years back we did a library program together and you talked about a horrific incident you fictionalized in Multiple Wounds.
AR: I came home late one night and there were fire trucks and police everywhere. As it turned out there had been a double homicide of a mother and daughter on our street, and the murderer attempted a cover-up by setting a fire. The murderer even killed the family's two pugs. The only survivor was Rainbow the family cat.
TJP: A cat that you and your wife adopted.
AR: It was heartbreaking watching Rainbow going in and out of the ruins looking for her family the day after the murders. When we first took her in, she really smelled of smoke.
TJP: So you had your detective do the same thing in Multiple Wounds.
AR: For both of us, it was the only good thing to come out of a tragedy.
TJP: In the library talk you also mentioned that your working with San Diego Police Department helped you write your novel.
AR: I worked with Homicide Team IV where the sergeant called me to the scene of the homicide just like the rest of the team. Most of his calls came after midnight, and like the detectives I hurried to be there within half an hour of the call. I dressed the part with a blue blazer and tie. On a few occasions the media asked me to comment on the crime and I always referred them to “my sergeant.”
TJP: There’s nothing like getting that firsthand experience.
AR: It’s one thing writing about a murder, but another thing seeing a person that died through violence.
TJP: The book was nominated for a lot of big mystery awards.
AR: It ended up being a bridesmaid. I don't have a shelf of Edgars like you do! How about loaning me one?
TJP: I'm sorry. Our connection seems to be breaking up.

Holly, christened Helen Troy by her classicist father, has disassociative identity disorder, and Cheever has his hands full just juggling her multiple personalities: passive Holly, childlike Caitlin, angry male Cronos, sexy Eris, melancholy Eurydice, painfully empathic Hygeia, vengeful Nemesis, the wildly energetic Maenads, the intuitive Moirae, and Pandora, the gatekeeper and guide to all the others. (In one virtuoso scene, Cheever takes Holly out to lunch and watches as she orders, in rapid succession, an albacore melt, a rare steak, a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, lamb salad, chicken fajitas, and artichoke heart pizza.) Clearly Holly has armored herself with this impressive roster of alters in response to a harrowing trauma, and it's no criticism of Russell to say that just as the other suspects, with only one personality apiece, can't hope to compete with Holly's brilliantly evoked Greek Chorus, her troubled past steals the limelight from Bonnie's present-day murder. Another Masterpiece From Alan Russell

This is the second Russell book I've read. The second of what I hope will be many, many more. I find it difficult to find the right words to describe how much this book moved and entertained me. At the base of this book is a murder mystery. But in many respects I think of it more as a vehicle to move the human story that is the true focus of the book. A detective is faced with a potential witness or even suspect who suffers from dissociative identity disorder (multiple personalities). Though he knows little about this disorder, with the help of Helen's (the witness's) psychiatrist, he begins to learn the complexity of the disturbed and disturbing life that Helen lives. What is so moving and wonderful about this story is that the reader learns that all three (detective, psychiatrist, and witness) suffer from various wounds that they struggle with. Russell's ability to put the reader inside these personal and profound struggles is astonishing. I've seen a few movies about DID, Sybil and The Three Faces of Eve come to mind. But Russell's protrayal is, well, astonishing!!! I was so invested in these three characters and their struggles that I almost wanted to skim my way to the end, and yet wanted to read every word carefully because they are so skillfully woven on the page. The investigation is interesting, but more so because of how it pulls the characters to the story's conclusion. I HIGHLY, HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend this novel. And I'll be seeking my next Russell book!

Excellent mystery novel - guaranteed to become a classic.

Having read two of Alan Russell's books, including the Hotel Detective and the Fat Innkeeper, I was totally unprepared for this excellent novel. Although the sense of humor is still evident, Mr. Russell approaches the subject of multiple personalities much more seriously while providing the reader with a lesson in classical myths (read it and you will understand...) Exceptional read which will be enjoyed by those already familiar with Mr. Russell's work as well as new readers. This book should be in the Amazon top 50 list

A terrific read

I had read Mr. Russell's "Burning Man" and was already taken by his writing style, so I had high expectations for this book. I have to say I was not disappointed. I couldn't put this book down. It works so well on many levels - a mystery, thriller, love story, psychological study and a Greek mythology lesson. I have to disagree with the reader who said that you have to know Greek mythology to understand this book. There is enough explanation to know what is going on. I don't like to give plot summaries. You can get that when you look online at the book. Suffice it to say that it involves murder, a young woman with multiple personalities (all of them but one from Greek mythology), a smart detective, a charming psychiatrist, and a mysterious past, tangled up in a web of mythological characters. You get to care about each of the main characters, and can't wait for the final outcome. Bright readers might be able to guess part or most of the mysteries, but that doesn't matter. The writing is quite expert and I highly recommend this book.
