Wrong title

If you were a research student looking to gain some insight into Indian business culture then you would be as disappointed as I was after reading this book. The back cover of the book suggests "Indian Business Culture addresses the cultural issues related to doing business in India" but the reader is left wondering 'where'? From the tilte of the book you would expect discussion about cultural issues in Indian business however this is not the case. The book is obviously wrongly titled. Its deals with socio-political history of India. The author has carelessly title the book. It also contains some errors such as Nehru's death is claimed to have occured in 1962 whereas he actually died in 1964. There are occasional gramamtical and spelling errors too.This book isnt worth £19.00.

Not much 'culture' to it

I was disappointed by this book -- I was looking for a book describing cultural assumptions of Indian businesses and how these contrast to the cultural assumptions of Western, especially American businesses. That's not what this book is about at all. This book is a very high level discussion of Indian national economic policy. I think a better title would have been "Indian Business Policy" rather than "Indian Business Culture" since the term 'culture' is inappropriately applied here.

China's environmental impact beyond its borders

Incredibly insightful and well-researched book that fills a niche in environmental reporting on China. China's economic rise and the ensuing environmental impact has become a hot topic in journalism, for more likely than not the future of the environmental debate will center upon China in the coming years. However, before reading Craig Simon's "The Devouring Dragon" I hadn't fully considered China's impact on the environment far beyond its borders. Breakneck "GDPism" at all cost has dire effects not just for Chinese citizens who drink poisoned water and choke on filthy air, it has negatively influenced biodiversity, air quality, and resource availability across the globe. Craig Simons takes his readers for a illuminating yet at times depressing ride through the jungles of remote New Guinea to our American backyard so we can see the extent of the danger reckless and resource-greedy development poses for the environment. China today is at an environmental turning point, and the entire world hangs in the balance.

Frightening and Time for positive action

The book was excellent at explaining the present dangers that the world experiences and the future action to take to avoid devastation of our Planet Earth. Devouring Dragon is the perfect title for the contents. The author's wide experience of visits to so many different places, his PCV experience, his work as a journalist, his avid interest in nature, his ability and energy to get to meet and discuss with so many different people, and his expertise in writing has made this book a great read to say the least. I really appreciate the positive attitude throughout the narrative and I also appreciate the candid truth that mentions that China is only following what America has already done. It is so essential that both the U.S. and China must work on the forefront to help people to realize the need to do even the smallest things in their daily lives to help the planet and stop harming it. Great book and kudos to the author!

Well-researched, well-written, and scary

I just finished this book this morning. At times it felt like a political thriller, and at other times it felt like investigative reporting and then shifted to personal travelogue. Simons' book is scary, eye-opening, well-researched, and well-written. He offers a unique perspective as a Westerner having lived in China for over a decade (and apparently now raising a family in Beijing). His hikes to the world's remote corners are worth the read alone, but how his travels to smalltown Colorado and Papua New Guinea connect with what's happening globally makes the book a more enriching read. The structure of the book, with its focus on water, animals, forests, and sky, is wonderful. A must-read for anyone who cares about the planet and how we consume what we consume. What to do about the emissions face-off between China and the US? Perhaps that will be Simons sequel.

Four environmentalists, before the term was invented

Dorman explores the origins of American conservation and environmentalism by studying four key men of the nineteenth century -- George Perkins Marsh (1801-1882), Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862), John Muir (1838-1914), and John Wesley Powell (1834-1902). Thoreau and Muir appear often in works of this kind, and Powell is occasionally added and is best known for his trip down the Colorado River and into the Grand Canyon. But what of Marsh? This Vermont lawyer, legislator, and industrialist published the book _Man and Nature_ in 1864. His travels to Europe and the Middle East were part of his enlightenment into the relationship between humans and Nature. He was one of the first individuals to admit that "all nature is linked together by invisible bonds" and to see man as a "destructive power" in the scenario. He recommended restoration efforts for the rampant deforestation in the northeastern America of the mid-1800s and suggested governmental control of such an endeavor, in spite of that institution's many failings. For the biography of Marsh alone, Dorman's book is worthwhile reading. But even if you think you already know the basics about the other three personalities, you'll learn something new here. Dorman doesn't just rehash old information; he provides a fresh interpretation of their contributions, illustrating the societal influences that formed their belief systems, and connecting each man to at least one of the other three at least once. A good addition to the 21st-century environmentalist's bookshelf.

Learning from Foreign Wars examines how the Russian army interpreted, and what lessons it learned from the wars in Europe between 1859 and 1871, and the American Civil War. This was a time marked by rapid change - political, social, economic and technological. By raising the question of learning from foreign wars the author attempts to fill a gap in the historiography of the Russian army.

The army was one of the pillars on which the Russian regime built its power, and it was crucial for the survival of the regime both in domestic and foreign affairs. The reactions and thinking of the military at a time of rapid social, political, economic, and technological change, therefore, tell a lot about the regime's ability to adjust, develop, and ultimately survive. Furthermore, the influence of foreign wars on Russian strategic war planning is analyzed with the use of the first Russian war plan of 1873 and the proceedings from the strategic conference, chaired by Alexander II, in 1873. The influence of foreign wars on the General Staff officer education is also investigated.

This book is largely based on extensive research in Russian archives. Special attention is given to the military attachés and, thus, the author fills a gap in the historiography of the Russian army. It uncovers the development of the military attaché institution with the use of new archival material. The Russian military attaché reports from the European Great Powers 1859-71 and the observer reports from the different theaters of war are also examined. In addition, extensive use has been made of the military press and contemporary military literature with regard to the wars.

Apart from the work’s interest to those who study the Russian Army and its post-Crimean reforms, the book has a wider value to those researching the origins of operational art and modern military theory, as well as general warfare in the mid-19th Century, very much a hinge period in its development. The book has a very extensive bibliography with details of Russian archival material and this is not the least of its strengths.... an interesting work of far wider interest than one would assume from its title. About the Author
Gudrun Persson is a lecturer at Stockholm University, specializing in Russian reform periods and focusing on military reforms. She received her Ph.D. at the London School of Economics and Political Science. She has published several books and articles on these subjects, "The Russian Military Attaches and the Wars of the 1860s - A Case for Reform." in Reforming the Tsar's Army, eds. David Schimmelpenninck van der Oye, Bruce W. Menning. Woodrow Wilson Center Press, 2004, Why did the Soviet Union Fall? SNS, Stockholm 2006 (in Swedish). "Russia - In Search for a Constitution" in Constitutions and Political Systems in Europe, the USA, and Asia, ed. Anders Mellbourn, Sekel forlag, 2009 (in Swedish). She is currently working on a history of the military as an element in Russian and Soviet history.

Good read, but not appropriate for young adults.

A well-written book set during the last day of World War I, Eleven Eleven tells the story of three young men pulled into the war while in their teens. Young, naïve and surrounded by death and violence, the three come together in the waning minutes of the war.
While this book is an accurate description of war during the time period, the violence and stark realities of the war portrayed in the book mean it is not appropriate for young adults – perhaps mature teens over the age of 16.
I’m glad I read the book as part of my plan to learn more about World War I. It was a quick, but difficult read. I recommend.

HAVING been in the VIET Nam conflict this brought back some memories some good and some bad. I felt like I was right there. It was a real good well told story. ONE could relate to the characters.

Paul Craig is Professor of English Law, MA, BCL FBA, QC (Hon). He has taught at Oxford throughout his academic career, initially at Worcester College, and now at St John's College, and has held visiting teaching positions in Canada and the USA. Good, although lenghthy and sometimes missing definitions

At first difficult to get through but once you manage to read the first chapters, you'll learn a lot. A bit lenghthy and repetitive at times, but how could one make such title exciting, right? You'll find a lot of information in it. Although sometimes I missed clear definitions of terms to make it more user friendly, sometimes I had to use google. All in all, it's a good text book and you'll most probably find what you're looking for in it.

Good cookbook, but for the slow cooker?

I was really excited about this book. I love Mexican food and I am a busy single parent that loves to use a crockpot. A match made in heaven, right?

Well...my issue is that the real bonus of a slow cooker is to be able to turn it on and go to work and have dinner when you get home. The vast majority of the recipes in this book are in the slow cooker for 4 hours or less or do not use the slow cooker at all! While I am sure that there are some good recipes, I already have my standard Mexican recipes and I don't see making a lot of these that are similar. Just not what I expected.

Delicious recipes, not simply slow cooked

Lets get it straight right off the bat; this book has great recipes.

If you are more than slow cooker adept in the kitchen you should be able to prepare most these in a short amount of time. If you need to drag them on, then follow the directions word for word. Be forewarned, however, these recipes are not simply set and forget. They involve care taking unlike what we tend to thing of as slow cooker recipes. That means that some times you will need to add suace, move meats, change temperatures, etc. The flavors you will get for being around while it cooks is way worth it.

The author definitely spent some time traveling, tasting, and getting it right. My best advice, especially for the average kitchen chemist like myself, is to avoid changing things too much. The biggest lesson from this book is that simple flavors, cooked properly, deliver the biggest flavors. Does that mean cooking in a crock pot is the only way? Definitely not. But even with the couple of times you'll have to move things or prepare a salsa at the end of cooking you will be rewarded with a cuisine as delicious as the pictures shown in the book.

Additionally, her flavors are right on point with Rick Bayless; she's definitely doing something right.

At last! authentic Mexican meals using fresh ingredients and a slow cooker

I am delighted with this addition to my slow cooker cookbooks; Mexican cuisine is a favorite of mine, and I have long wished that I had some authentic recipes that were adapted to the slow cooker. Usually after trying out recipes from a cookbook, I am able to do my own adaptations, but my experience has been that Mexican sauces, soups, and meat recipes were difficult to adapt. The few so-called "Mexican" recipes that I found in other slow cooker books were not at all what I was looking for; they tend to use tortillas layered in a slow cooker with canned ingredients (and sometimes meat) on top. The result is certainly not at all authentic, and the tortillas just fall apart with such long cooking.

This book is a completely different sort of slow cooker book than some cooks will be used to: some of the recipes require some prep work (at a minimum, the chili peppers need to be roasted, peeled, and chopped), and many of the recipes require 4-6 hours of cooking. Sometimes there are ingredients to add in the last hour of cooking. A few reviewers have complained that the time factor for these steps defeats the purpose of the slow cooker. Each cook will need to judge that issue for himself or herself, but my view is that the use of fresh ingredients and a few extra steps such as browning the meat and roasting the peppers for maximum flavor bring authentic and delicious results. The prep work can be done the night before if time is short. The author suggests using a programmable cooker too, so that after 6 hours of cooking on low, it will automatically move to a "warm" setting. This seems like a good compromise for cooks who need to be away all day; you can still come home to a fine Mexican meal that is kept at serving temperature.

There are 17 soup recipes in this book, and they are all worth making. Nearly all of them require at least 6 hours of cook time and little preparation. A few recipes in the book require up to 10 hours, such as the Lentil Soup with Longaniza sausage (p. 25). I loved the Pork Ribs in Chipotle-Tomatillo Salsa (p. 44), which also needs 6 hours and requires only 6 ingredients. It has no prep work at all; everything goes in at once, and the ribs are tender with a wonderful sauce.

Some reviewers felt that the inclusion of a few salsa, taco, and burrito recipes that don't use the slow cooker was not necessary. I am grateful to see them there, because the variety of salsas and other "extras," as well as the suggestions for dishes that pair well with the slow-cooked ones, enhance the whole experience of a Mexican meal.

For cooks who really can't get over the fact that some recipes require only 4 hours of cooking, I'd say why not make them on the week-end? You can still plan to leave the cooker on while you go out. With this book, you won't risk overcooking meats and sauces, and you will use fresh ingredients. There are no indications for hotness level in the recipes (apart from a brief mention occasionally), so cooks may need to adapt them to their own taste. For me, the recommended amounts are generally moderately hot--fine for me, but if I made them for guests, I would adjust them downward a bit.

This is a book packed with information, helpful hints about slow cooking, and extra suggestions for variations on each recipe. The results are full of deep flavor and present a broad sample of Mexican meals for which the slow cooker can be a great help.
