Jane Austen anti-Modern Library consipiracy??

There are two similar in tone if not identical reviews on amazon.com and amazon.ca warning people away from this edition because it's not "complete".

Clearly, they didn't read the title past "Complete Novels" to the "Volume I" part which specified pretty precisely which of the six complete novels were part of this volume.

I'm mystified. Surely anyone who's willing and eager (let alone able) to read Austen could understand it would take two volumes to publish the complete works? Come on, they average 300 pages apiece!

So I think the two correspondents are agents of Penguin or Oxford World's Classics or somebody who has an interest in turning people away from the Modern Library editions.

Oh yeah, a review: the Modern Library editions are excellent. They're complete (so you have to buy TWO books!), they're affordable, and they're durable.

Jane Austen. Her name is practically synonymous with classic, understated romance, as well as comedies of manners with a subtle, sly sense of humor. "The Complete Novels of Jane Austen, Vol. 2" brings together three more of Austen's works -- and while these are somewhat lesser known than Volume 1's novels, they are still charming and insightful.

"Emma" is a frothy romantic comedy about a rich, somewhat spoiled young lady named Emma Wodehouse, who has paired up a widower with her beloved governess. Fresh off her success, Emma tries to arrange the lives of people around her so that everyone is happy, particularly a sweet, earnest friend of hers. The problem is, life isn't that simple -- and neither is love.

"Northanger Abbey" is a fitting location for Austen's spoof on gothic romances. Hyperimaginative Catherine Moreland has always loved gothic romances. When a family friend takes her to Bath, she is taken under the wing of the Tilney family, and especially handsome Henry -- but soon she learns a lesson about the difference between fantasy and reality.

And in "Persuasion," Anne Elliott's family is forced to rent out their family estate... only for the new tenants to be relatives of Anne's ex-fiance, Captain Wentworth. Long ago, she was persuaded to dump the then-penniless sailor, but she has never stopped loving him. And as a charming cousin begins to show interest in her, Anne must figure out if her former boyfriend still loves her.

Jane Austen had a rare talent for depicting human nature, and creating a sense of drama and tension without becoming melodramatic. Each story is a love story, tempered with some clever commentary on the society of Austen's day (example: entailment, which plays a part in one of the plots; illegitimacy, for another), and a biting, sharp-edged wit.

Despite the formal stuffiness of the time, Austen painted her stories vividly -- powerful emotions and vivid splashes of prose, as well as some really delicious dialogue ("Silly things do cease to be silly if they are done by sensible people in an impudent way"). And she also weaves in some intensely romantic moments as well ("I am half agony, half hope. Tell me not that I am too late, that such precious feelings are gone for ever").

And we get a great range of heroines here. Emma Wodehouse is immature but good-hearted, bumbling through affairs of the heart and messing things up; Catherine is similarly naive and wide-eyed, not yet realizing that real life's drama isn't as cool as it is in books. And Anne Elliott is a heroine clearly penned in Austen's maturity -- she's quiet but strong, regretting her mistakes even as she slowly works to fix them.

"The Complete Novels of Jane Austen, Vol. 2 (Emma / Northanger Abbey / Persuasion)" brings together three of these romantic, often biting classics. They're not quite as well-known as "Pride and Prejudice," but still very romantic and funny.

Well-Made Book

This book is very well-made. The cover, under the jacket, is nice. The binding is solid. The pages are thick enough to stand up to many years of use. The print is pretty and centered correctly (an issue I've noticed among other publishing companies). It just seems like a great collection item, perfect for that special Austen-lover on your holiday shopping list!

About the Author

Diego Cantor is a software engineer with experience in government, education, finance, enterprise resource planning (ERP) and data warehouse (DWH) projects. He has also been appointed as instructor at the Faculty of Engineering at the Universidad de los Andes (Colombia) in the department of Systems Engineering.

He did an internship at the CREATIS lab in Lyon, France. During that internship he implemented a component model based on the OSGi standards for medical imaging applications. After that, he did an internship at the Australian e-Health Research Centre in Brisbane, Australia, working on imaging analysis techniques and applying them to the study of Alzheimer's disease.

During his graduate studies, Diego worked on the processing of medical images (MRI) in 3D. This work led him to work with VTK and ITK and later on to research on technologies to improve state of the art medical imaging visualization and medical simulation systems.

Currently he is a PhD student at the University of Western Ontario in Canada. There, he works on computational methods to correlate MRI to digital histology imaging.

Diego speaks English, Spanish, and French.

Brandon Jones has been developing WebGL demos since the technology first began appearing in browsers in early 2010. He finds that it's the perfect combination of two aspects of programming that he loves, allowing him to combine eight years of web development experience and a life-long passion for real-time graphics.

Brandon currently works with cutting-edge HTML5 development at Motorola Mobility.

Somewhat vague

The book is somewhat vague about giving important details in the beginning. I believe the author had good intentions, but found the book to be somewhat dry and boring to read. Sample code was provided by a 3rd party, which is great, but after reading several chapters and working with the sample code, I still found myself asking questions. I'm one that needs brief answers and a step by step approach without allot of fluff to read. In other words, I wanted the book to get to the point quickly.

Get started using WebGL, load and display objects using shaders!

If you have wanted to start learning any kind of OpenGL, WebGL is a great way to start learning. This book provides a lot of information about using WebGL, from just introducing the canvas tag, to actually loading models from Blender in obj format, picking geometry using the mouse and ray tracing, and even using shaders in your WebGL application.

If you have used OpenGL or OpenGL ES before, a lot of the techniques will be very familiar. If you haven't he starts off at the beginning, explaining everything thoroughly, and as long as you have programmed before, and hopefully have used Javascript, you will be able to start creating WebGL apps using modern techniques. The advantages of using WebGL include not needing to compile anything, so any text editor is all you really need(although I would recomend at least using notepad++), it uses Javascript, so has a relatively low barrier of entry for more novice programmers, and it's viewable on the web- so you could upload it to your website for everyone to be able to check out.

If you know some Javascript, and are interested in adding anywhere from simple 3d, up to enough to create a small 3d game, this book would be able to get you started, and confident with using WebGL.

Most software books are useless ... WebGL is tricky because it's not just a small step from OpenGL ... it's all shader-based and thus actually warrants a book of this type. I wish I had more time to devote to it.

A Good Overview of Soteriology

Having just finished this book,I can say that it is mainly focused upon Jesus as means of salvation, our 'human need' for such salvation and lastly God as overall image of Jesus' life in Judea and his message of repention that O'Collins is overly concentrating on. Whilst being somewhat brief in the historical arguments surrounding his storyline, O'Collins is fair to both sides of the various debates, choosing to portray one main thesis, (eg. St Augustine), against a critic and moving along with a peppering of Biblical quotes proving somewhat tedious as the book develops, (I suggest an appendix is needed). His inclusion of recent films like Mel Gibson's 'Passion' and New Zealands Peter Jackson interpretation of L.O.T.R.- to describe human sin, (the one ring analogy, p127) is very well linked into the whole explanation of humanity as fallen and in need of 'healing'. Apart from that, it is overall well worth investing in and adding to any Theological collection.

A Wonderful Book- very readable!!

I have just discovered this wonderful writer, Gerald O'Collins, S.J. - see also his "Christology". This book, "Jesus Our Redeemer",is expanding my knowledge and understanding tremendously. I can pick it up at any page and find it hard to put down. It leads me to pray as I read. I hope that many others will find the joy in it that I am finding. Glad it is on kindle also. My goal is to realize a mature Biblical Spirituality in my own life. "Jesus our Redeemer" is a giant step toward that. Doreen Casey

First I laughed then the steam came out of my ears

One of the founders of my organization(The Leapfrog Group) recommended this book so I bought it expecting to plow through a dense analysis on measuring health outcomes. Okay, this is my field, but I expected the book to be work not entertainment. I was wrong. My 5 year old wanted a turn reading the book because every time I picked it up I was truly LOL. Honestly this guy is every bit as funny as Dave Barry!

Once the laughter subsided though I reread the book to figure out what the point was, and that is when I realized how important this is to health care, particularly for employers investing in health benefits, including taxpayers. Many programs in wellness and disease management are not working as advertised, and Al Lewis shows us how we got snowed to think they were. What makes me mad is to think of the money wasted on all this. We do not have extra money for fruitless adventures in health care!

So this is a terrific read and game changing.

Wish I had this book ten years ago!

Why Nobody Believes The Numbers is an excellent book that I wish I had ten years ago when I was the Chief Medical Officer of UnitedHealthcare and trying to calculate the ROI of disease management programs. Looking back, demanding this logical methodology/approach from ourselves and from our vendors would have quickly identified whether we were making a difference in the cost and care of patients. And, ultimately, we could have saved insurers and employers LOTS of money since most programs don't generate an ROI and we would have either not implemented them at all or quickly shut them down. Instead, we maintained them with the false hope that they were decreasing medical costs. Thank goodness this book is so darn funny...or else I'd cry at all the time and money we wasted.

Also, the principles in this book ALSO apply to the ROI analysis of other health management services: apps/games, wellness/prevention programs services, ACOs/Patient Centered Medical Homes, etc etc. The title (....Distinguishing Fact from Fiction in Population Health Management) is too limited...maybe he can edit that in the 2nd edition.

Bottom line: This book should be required reading for investors, employers, health care executives, insurers, and entrepreneurs....or at least for the smart ones that aren't afraid of intellectual integrity and value truth.

Many important lessons

Al Lewis managed to squeeze several categories of lessons into this book, all of which make it worth reading. Other reviews have extolled the virtues of Al's dive into wellness and DM so I'm going to focus on three benefits that I got from reading it, all of which are likely good reasons for you to read it.
First, he forced me to realize that my statistical thinking had become very lazy. It wasn't that I was falling for statistics that could not pass a plausibility test but I had stopped thinking about why they didn't pass. A few chapters into this and I felt like my edge had been reset.
Second, the book teaches a very simple lesson in business and life: it is not easy to deliver great results. The claims made by some of the DM companies are humorous but no more humorous than claims made by many companies in many industries. Let this be a lesson on similar chicanery going on all around us. The claims are similar to promises that led to truth in advertising yet we probably miss it more often than we see it.
Finally, results do not happen overnight. Change takes time. It needs to be thought through, It costs money. It has to accommodate human behavior and differences. The Highmark, BlackBox and Quantum examples all support that simple conclusion but it is a conclusion that we often skip in favor of a 350% cost improvement in Year 1.
I enjoyed the book and will recommend it within healthcare to make smarter buyers and users and outside of healthcare to give others an example of the kinds of examples they should be watching for in their own industries.

Solid police British police procedural

On the night of a bad storm, farmer Ned Barton goes outside to investigate a banging barn door. What he finds horrifies him: the naked body of a woman lying on hay bales in a sacrificial pose. She is the wife of the owner of the farm. Police go to the house to break the dreadful news and discover the bodies of her husband and two little girls. At first it's believed that the family of four is wiped out, but one of the girls isn't a family member. Their sixteen-year old son Daniel is missing.

Superintendent Mike Yeadings has to piece together what has happened. The first question that needs answering is the whereabouts of Daniel. Is he responsible for this carnage? Or is he out there somewhere, perhaps dead or injured. They make contact with the only relative, Daniel's maternal grandmother, Anna Plumley.

Anna is a retired air-force officer, a practical, no-nonsense woman. Naturally she is one of the suspects but Detective Sergeant Rosemary Zynzynski (known as "Z" - it's easier than buying a vowel!) finds it difficult to believe she can be responsible. Anna is estranged from her murdered daughter. Jennifer always was a wild child and Anna has long since despaired of her.

THE EDGE has all the hallmarks of a police procedural. We have a ranking officer who co-ordinates the investigation and assigns officers to follow leads. The team, consisting of "Z", Detective Sergeant Beaumont and the dyspeptic acting Detective Chief Inspector Salmon all have their own distinct personalities. Where it does differ from most novels of this genre is the involvement of one of the suspects, Anna Plumley. Anna's career has equipped her well for a police investigation and she is able to provide history and insights into the family that may assist in finding the identity of the killer or killers. Of course there is the ever-present question. Is Anna all she appears to be and is her apparent desire to help hiding a darker motive?

An author doesn't successfully write twenty books in a series without getting a few things right. THE EDGE presents the crime, lines up some suspects and then adds red-herrings and dead ends to the mix. Along the way suspects are eliminated and new ones emerge as the police try to fathom out exactly what has happened. In short, THE EDGE is in many ways classic crime fiction. I hadn't read anything written by Clare Curzon before and I won't hesitate to read more.

As well as the twenty Mike Yeadings books, Clare Curzon has also written about twenty other novels, some under pseudonyms.

A British mystery to enjoy

After Connie Barton heard a sound during a stormy night, she couldn't get back to sleep. She convinced her husband, Ned (farm manager for the Hoad family) to investigate. The sound was from a banging barn door. Inside the dark barn, Ned discovered the naked body of Mrs. Hoad, spread-eagle over some bales of hay.

Superintendent Mike Yeadings is called out on the case. The disturbing news is that the woman is not the only one killed. Inside the house are the bodies of Mr. Hoad, his daughter and the daughter's friend. The Hoad's teenage son is not to be found.

Mike Yeadings and the police must find the killer. Is it the son? Or could he have been a victim? As Superintendent Yeadings, helped by DS Rosemary Zyczynski, follows the clues, they learn that there are many hidden secrets and the people involved with the Hoad family are not always what the seem to be.

If you enjoy British mysteries, The Edge is a disturbing yet interesting novel that will keep you turning the pages. As an American, I experienced some confusion as I wasn't familiar with some of the British police terms.

This is my first book by Clare Curzon, but I'd gladly pick up another Superintendent Yeadings story.

fabulous Thames Valley police procedural

In spite of the fury and noise of the horrific gale, farmer's wife Connie Barton hears what she assumes is something blown loose by the storm. She wakes up her husband Ned who grumpily listens and says it is Mr. Frederick Hoad's stable door. Knowing she will not allow him to go back to sleep, he grumblingly steps out into the torrent to simply shut the door tight. Instead of finding a bar to shut the door, he finds the naked body of Jennifer Hoad. The Bartons call the police who also find Frederick, their ten years old daughter Angela and an unknown school friend dead in the manor house. Their sixteen years old son Daniel is missing.

Superintendent Mike Yeadings of Thames Valley leads the investigation. The police contact the only known living relative the teen's maternal grandmother, retired air force officer Anna Plumley, who was estranged from her daughter Jennifer. Although Anna is a suspect, she offers much insight into the Hoad and Plumley families. Her forthright responses leads Detective Sergeant Rosemary "Z" Zynzynski to believe the veteran is not involved in the killings, but Detective Sergeant Beaumont and Detective Chief Inspector Salmon refuse to rule her out as no one except perhaps the missing adolescent or the away housekeeper seem likely.

THE EDGE is a fabulous Thames Valley police procedural as the prime police players are fully developed so that newcomers will understand what makes each tick while veterans will nod as each remains consistent. The extra strength to the whodunit is brought by an excellent key cast member, Anna who understands official investigations from her military days; readers will wonder if she is killer or a grieving relative seeking justice as her cooperation may be to throw the police off the trail or help them hone in on the culprit. Clare Curzon provides a terrific entry in her long running series with the freshness caused by Anna.

Good overview

This reference provides an easy to read overview of viruses. It starts with a chapter describing cells and the steps a virus must accomplish in its replicative cycle. Chapters then follow on bacteriophages and their contribution to our understanding of molecular biology, the defenses of cells against viruses, herpesviruses, DNA tumor viruses, retroviruses, influenza A viruses, and hepatitis viruses. The last chapter then considers the origins and evolution of viruses.

This is a very fascinating book for anyone who has an interest in the way viruses work and how they cause disease. It is mildly to moderately technical. The book is dated in that much has been discovered since it was written in the early 90s, but it is still has much useful information.

About the Author
Rick Bass, a native southerner, made his home in the Yaak Valley region of northern Montana with his wife and two children. He was one of three children born to C. R. Bass, a geologist, and Lucy Bass, an English teacher. Educated at Utah State University, he received a B.S. in petroleum geology in 1979. He worked for several years in Mississippi as a petroleum geologist before developing his career as a writer.

Ben O. Williams is a noted photographer, author, bird hunter, and dog breeder. He is the author and photographer of American Wingshooting and Hunting The Quails of North America.

His photography and writing have appeared in many prominent sporting magazines including Grays' Sporting Journal, Retreiver Journal, Pointing Dog Journal (for which he is a columnist), and Shooting Sportsman.

He lives along the Yellowstone River outside of Livingston, Montana, with his wife Bobbi, fourteen Brittany spaniels, and two English pointers.

Not a "How to book"

I read several critics reviews before making the purchase and was very excited about an instinctive method book. I read it from cover to cover over a weekend. I then went out Monday evening, full of warm and fuzzy feelings about dog training, to apply what I thought I learned and found myself staring at the dog not knowing where to start. I understand that the books overall theme was not just about yard work but I found the book more philosophical about the method and fell short where the rubber meets the road. I did use some of the material to tweak others teachers methods (Tarrant, Long or Smith). The book reads like a compilation of magazine articles that are loosely related and rambles a little to much for my taste(side bar information about his favorite dogs). It is a good winter fire side read and I highly recommend it as that, but not as an owners first hands on training reference.

Nice addition to dog training library

Ben Williams is an excellent author and story teller. He passes along his 40+ years of experience of training, hunting and generally living around bird dogs. His insight into bird dog behavior and their various personalities is invaluable.

However, this book is not a how-to guide for the common bird dog owner. Mr Williams has a large kennel, ample training area and hunts 100+ days a year. I need training advice and tips for a single dog owner hunting and trialing about 30 days a year.

Excellant Bird Dog Training Book

This book is a great read for anyone who enjoys training bird dogs and wingshooting. Mr. Williams knows bird dogs and how to train them. He never sweats the small things or mistakes dogs make. He is very patient and kind. Once I started to read this book, I couldn't put it down. Thanks for the wisdom.
