Some gems to be found

Had some real gems that I will take with me to the mat. But I struggled with the continual name-dropping and quoting of her own books. I also found her ranking of other women's gray-hairdos incredibly off putting. As someone who has worn her gray hair straight, long, and proud for years in complete disregard of current hair fashions, this judgmental tone and long discourse on the pros and cons of natural hair color was in sharp contrast to the author's claim to be letting go of this kind of judgmental attitude. More work for the path perhaps. I do applaud the author for sharing her story and her own internal dialogue -- not always the most comfortable reading but what pulled me through the whole book is that I did always feel her desire to be upfront and open -- that counts for a lot.

Really?

Despite relating to the notion of imperfect bodies can lead to years of unnecessary unhappiness for many women, I found no new insights in this book. In fact I cannot believe someone could write that many pages about how feeling fat made her so unhappy and so little about overcoming it. If you suffer from body acceptance this book will lead you to spending that much more time in that miserable state.

Not much depth

I read this book in two hours - it felt more like an overgrown magazine article than a book. Cyndi surely has wisdom and insight to share, but continual name dropping and her judgemental tone towards other women was off putting. I think the book could have benefitted from several more drafts before going to print - the end almost felt like a self-rightous attempt to prove she was morally superior to her husband. This is what happens when you record events too close to their unfolding. Again, several more drafts would have greatly improved this book.

About the Author
Hector Garcia was born in Spain, in 1981. What I've Been Waiting For

An unabashed Japanophile, I've collected a fair number of books on the country over the years, searching for that one book that would offer both decent photography and meaty content. While that's a lot to ask, I think "A Geek in Japan" comes the closest to fitting the bill.

Die-hard Japanophiles probably won't encounter too much in the way of new information here -- the strength of the book is purely in its presentation. Within the pages of this slim volume, you get hundreds of color photos of every aspect of Japan, every one of them dynamic, without the usual "travelogue" pics so many books have resorted to. I was particularly pleased to see the author has taken the "little bit of everything" approach, which means you can open a page at random and find something interesting to read. This isn't a single narrative, but rather made up of page-long sections covering everything from food to Japanese company dynamics. Bonus points for a two-page spread that demonstrates the evolution of "Densha Otoko" from anonymous forum posting to full-fledged Japanese multimedia phenomenon.

Immerse yourself in Japan

A geek in Japan is not a travel guide, but rather a way to immerse you in the Japanese culture, and therefore an essential read for anyone that really wants to enjoy a trip to Japan or learn about this wonderful country.

The author is an amazing photographer, and the whole book is populated with beautiful photos illustrating the different aspects of the Japanese culture. This fun, dynamic and colorful presentation manages to bring this book to life. You will find yourself jumping from section to section looking at fun pictures, and every time you start reading one of the sections it becomes so engaging that you will have to read it all. The narrative is fresh, fun and easy to read, while at the same time providing very complete and accurate description of a myriad of topics from the ancient traditions to the modern popular culture, and plenty of tips for travelers.

I got this book a couple of days ago, it is such a page turner than I went through it almost non-stop, and I find myself reading again sections I like and looking at the pictures on them. I highly recommend it.

Great book for Japan lovers

I truly enjoyed this book and I think it's going to delight anyone with an interest in Japan. It reads as a true personal experience of the country, not another tourist guide or brochure, it includes gorgeous photographs (taken by the author) and even though the word "geek" is on the title, Mr. Garcia strikes a difficult balance in the subjects he portraits, ranging from ancient traditions to the latest trends without forgetting the craziest Akihabara antics.

About the Author
Mark Hutchinson is University Historian at the University of Western Sydney. He has also served as founding Director of the Centre for the Study of Australian Christianity (1991-1999) and as Reader in History and Society at Alphacrucis College. His research has been published in the Journal of Religious History, Church History, the History of Education Review and the Australian Journal of Politics and History.

John Wolffe is Professor of Religious History at The Open University where he previously served as Head of the Religious Studies Department and as Associate Dean (Research) in the Faculty of Arts. He is the author of several books and numerous articles and book chapters on evangelicalism and British national identities, most recently The Expansion of Evangelicalism (2006).

About the Author

Paul S. Boyer was Merle Curti Professor of History Emeritus at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. A leading authority on American history, his writings span the social origins of the Salem witchcraft outbreak to the cultural impact of the atomic bomb and the political implications of Bible prophecy belief in contemporary America. A history textbook author and editor of reference works, including The Oxford Companion to United States History, he published in many general-interest periodicals. He also appeared on PBS, BBC, the History Channel, and the Discovery Channel, and lectured at some 100 colleges and universities in the United States, Germany, Great Britain, Ireland, Scandinavia, and Switzerland.

Great quick read

Few books tell you the story of the United States starting from Columbus to be Arab Spring within a few hours. I highly recommend it to people who want to learn the basics of the US history and evolution.

Comprehensive, but not entirely accurate nor balanced

American History: A Very Short Introduction provides its reader with as comprehensive a look at American political, social and cultural history as is possible in under 200 small pages (the standard format for the "Very Short Introduction" series, whose books are not only short but small as well) and in a well written manner. Virtually every event, person of significance and movement in American history receives at least a mention, which must have been a difficult task to accomplish given the strictures. What it does not do, however, is provide consistently up to date scholarship or a proper sense of proportion of America's triumphs to failures. It also contains a few errors and some of Boyer's interpretations of events will provoke disagreement with those who do not share his political leanings.

Boyer essentially begins with the English settlement of North America, dispensing with the pre-Columbian native peoples, Leif Ericson and non-English Europeans in only a few pages. The colonial period is one of the book's strengths as Boyer explains the development of the English settlements at Jamestown and Plymouth and the social development of the New World as different from that of the Old. The events leading to the Revolution are also nicely cataloged, and Boyer takes us from the post-Revolutionary war period through the Gilded Age in a fairly conventional manner.

Some of Boyer's interpretations of events rely on dated scholarship, however. A simplistic search for foreign markets accounts entirely for the Spanish-American War. His account of the New Deal places the stock market crash in the role of catalyst of the Great Depression failing to mention the role of monetary policy, which is at the core of today's economic understanding. He also dredges up the traditional misconception that Americans' fondness for coffee dates from the Boston Tea Party and incorrectly cites the date of England's Glorious Revolution. Boyer also cites a famous utterance by Andrew Jackson in defiance of the Supreme Court that is considered apocryphal.

Although explicitly Boyer strives for objectivity he does not always achieve it. His account is generally well balanced through Reconstruction, but his leftward leanings emerge shortly thereafter and his interpretation of events from the Gilded Age to the present too often becomes predictable and selective. Progressives are, unsurprisingly for a University of Wisconsin professor, lauded and nearly every legislative enactment of the New Deal and Great Society is given space. Like many historians, though, Boyer mistakes these enactments as achievements in their own right, and rarely analyzes whether they, in fact, accomplished their goals. For instance, he credits President Clinton with welfare reform but never asks why a Democratic president would see the need to reform it in the first place. His characterization of today's Tea Party as an offshoot of the religious right ignores the firestorm that occurred a result of policies that were perceived to "bailout" the impecunious (whether on Wall Street, in the housing market or the auto industry) at the expense of those who had behaved in a fiscally responsible manner in the Tea Party members' views.

Boyer concludes by cataloging America's many challenges and faults as he finds them today. Nonetheless, he concludes that "when the balance is drawn, America's record of achievement in advancing human well-being may ultimately outweigh the rest and prove a more lasting measure of national greatness than transient imperial power, military might, or a mere abundance of ephemeral material goods." The reader will likely need consult another book to understand, however, why that is.

While acknowledging the distinctions and divergences in imperial endeavours in Asia and the Americas - not least in terms of the size of indigenous populations, technical and cultural differences, and approaches to indigenous polities - this book argues that these differences must be seen in the context of what Britons overseas shared, including constitutional principles, claims of sovereignty, disciplinary regimes and military attitudes.

About the Author
H. V. Bowen is Professor of Modern History at Swansea University. His books include The Business of Empire: The East India Company and Imperial Britain, 1760-1833 (2006) and Wales and the British Overseas Empire: Interactions and Influences, 1680-1830 (as editor, 2011).

Elizabeth Mancke is the Canada Research Chair in Atlantic Canada Studies at the University of New Brunswick. Her books include The Fault Lines of Empire: Political Differentiation in Massachusetts and Nova Scotia, c.1760-1830 (2004) and The Creation of the British Atlantic World (as co-editor, 2005).

John G. Reid is a member of the Department of History at Saint Mary's University and Senior Research Fellow at the Gorsebrook Research Institute. His books include New England and the Maritime Provinces: Connections and Comparisons (as co-editor, 2005) and Essays on Northeastern America, Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries (2008).

Things are pretty grim at Feral house, and all is not well with the warriors. Their Radiant is gone, kidnapped, and their leader is a hot mess. They need to get Kara back soon, not just for the radiance they all need to survive, but for Lyon's sanity and mental stability. If she dies, he will most certainly follow.

The prickly, rage-ridden Melisande has been a mystery since we first met her in Zee and Julianne's story. Her history is a traumatic one, and A Love Untamed brings it all back into brutally unforgiving focus for the Ilina who has had to harden her heart and spirit to survive so much. Mel is literally an ancient, so I loved learning "firsthand" about the times before The Sacrifice and all that came just after. The burden of such a long memory and existence must be fierce, but nothing haunts Melisande more than her personal trauma and the need to maintain her shield and the cold heart that lets her keep on keepin' on... to serve her queen and make amends with her sisters.

I loved getting to see Zee and Julianne again! Theirs was the very first Ferals story I read, Hearts Untamed, a short in an anthology called Bitten By Cupid, and where I first met my shifter crush, Jag. Zee and Kieran/Fox have been friends for many years, and their bond is tight. Our new Fox is a charmer, all sweet, sexy, and Irish. His speech and vocabulary are well crafted, and it's easy to imagine his deep, smooth voice lilting in the brogue that has made many a female heart flutter.

"Things are not as they seem" has been a theme throughout the Feral Warriors books, but it's practically the anthem of A Love Untamed. Mage traps, untrusted new Ferals, and brutally drastic measures define this new turn in the series. The Feral Warriors are definitely off the rails! Secrets about the warriors you thought you knew and revelations about some who've lost their way fill in storyline gaps that fans of the series will relish. Melisande and Fox are lovely together, and getting to learn more about some of the unmated characters was exciting. It looks like the next book may take a break from the usual mage-focused plot; this is the first book in a long time that tied up the main storyline without leaving me gasping at an unexpected ending. Cliffhanger? But of course! The good news is you probably won't be pulling out your hair from the suspense with this one!

As much as I've enjoyed the recent mage storylines, I'm glad the next book looks to be focused on some relatively new characters outside the immediate grasp of Inir and his daemon minions. While Fox and Mel are both compelling characters and I really enjoyed their interaction, their intimate scenes didn't have the same "oomph" some of the others have had for me. I think that might be partly due to Fox being less "alpha" than the other males (he's a charmer, a sweetheart, and a gentleman) and partly due to the emotional restrictions Mel's past has cursed her with. Jag, the resident bad boy of Feral House, was also tamer than usual, and I missed his signature abundance of snarky banter. I loved the threads weaving history between Jag, Olivia, Fox, Melisande, Arianna, Kougar, Zeeland, and Julianna; I think this is the first time a couple has had more than one connection to the Ferals on both sides, and it made for great character-building.

This 7th installment in the Feral Warriors series is a memorable gauntlet of past sins and their devastating consequences, studded with gentle humor and acceptance, and culminating in a powerful bond and the redemption of one of the most unlikely heroines of the series. While it wasn't my favorite read of them all, it is definitely a solid contribution to an already outstandingly addicting series. A Love Untamed is a GraveTells Recommended Read!

Not to be missed!

Pamela Palmer's latest has a timeline that overlaps with the prior tale in the series. This book is best read with at least that book, as well as the rest of a truly magnificent series. That said, this tale combines a moving love story between a persistent man and the wary object of his affection with a quest that requires its seekers to intuit traps and puzzles worthy of cinematic interpretation. All who value good storytelling should not miss this one!

As the newest member of the Feral Warriors, Fox is still trying to learn his place in the elite brotherhood. It's a task made even more difficult by the fact that he came into his animal at the same time a group of tainted animal spirits found their hosts.

He's barely instilled in Feral House when one of the tainted Ferals kidnaps Kara the Radiant, mate to the Feral leader and source of their power. Now Fox and his new brothers must join forces with members of the sensual and powerful Ilinas to rescue Kara and bring her back home.

It becomes immediately clear that Melisande, second in command of the Ilinas, is meant to be Fox's mate. That doesn't really go over big with either one of them. Fox is a playboy with no desire to settle down. He thinks he can scratch his itch with Melisande and be done with it. Melisande's issues, however, are far more complicated. She is the victim of horrific abuse that she has never gotten over. She has cut herself off from tender feelings to become a merciless killer for her people. And she fears that if she lets any emotions in, she will shatter.

For longtime fans of the series, the book shows Melisande in a very new light. She has done some coldhearted things in her past, but now we see why. It may not be enough to make everyone warm to her, but suffice it to say, she has been through a lot. Fox is pretty much your standard heartbreaker. He is gorgeous and he knows it. He loves playing the field and lives up to his reputation... until he realizes there has been a woman out there for him all along.

I like the world-building in this series for the most part, though it can get a little cheesy at times with the animal names and nicknames. I like that Pamela Palmer isn't afraid to get dark with it (though fortunately not as dark as in her Vamp City books.) In that vein, the way that Fox deals with Melisande's history of abuse went a long way to improving his character in my opinion. Though with the gray cloud of her past hanging over them, I didn't find the sex, well, all that sexy.

She does a good job on setting up a story for the side character Grizz. Though it's a Wulfe story I really want. Overall, I found the book pretty good, but I didn't emotionally invest enough for it to be great.
