The Royal Corps of Signals: Unit Histories of the Corps (1920-2001), and its Antecedents, by Chris Lord

The ability to communicate is a prerequisite for success both in military and civil life. Surprisingly, everyone expects access to communications, but rarely wonders how it is achieved. The purpose of this book is to bring into focus one of the cornerstones of the success of the British Army, and to provide an insight into the complexity and diversity of the Royal Corps of Signals. This is done, not by narrative, but by delving into unit history rather than campaign history, thus offering a different perspective for the historian. Royal Signals is one of the largest Corps in the British Army, and consists of a body of very highly trained and dedicated personnel to manage, operate, and repair the advanced technology that is theirs to administer. Signals are the Invisible Elite, without them there is no victory. Before the independent Corps of Signals was formed in 1920, Royal Engineers provided communications for much of the Army. Details of their signal units are included. Reflecting the new technologies as they occur, the reader will see the new signal units being raised to facilitate the exigencies of the time. For example, during the Second World War the Golden Arrow Detachments were created as independent, mobile, high-speed transmitting and receiving stations to provide links to Britain, and thus provide High Command with the information from Commanders in the Field that was desperately needed. These units also passed intercepted enemy signals back to England for the code breakers at Bletchley Park. Other specialist Signal units were created for Air Support, Para Signals, Commandos, Interception, Fixed Communications, Peacekeeping and a multitude of other reasons. In today's changing world signals continue to get their message through - Swift and Sure. This book is a must for historians, genealogists, and those that served. It contains:- Overviews of the Signals Order of Battle at specific times in history- Detailed précis of specialist signal units including Commando, and Para units.- History of 35 Commonwealth and related Signal Corps- Photographs of many rare signal badges- Scores and scores of unit histories both Regular and Territorial from the past to the present

Complete in detail but lacking in interest
By Doug the Brit
Although this book is undoubtedly thorough in it's detail it read as too much of a laundry list for my tastes. Additionally I found the index unhelpful in trying to locate specifics that I was interested in. For those interested in the history and development of the Royal Signals Phillip Warner's 'The Vital Link' is probably a better proposition; unfortunately this only covers the history of the Corps to 1985

Gorgeous book, but not necessarily useful for design ideas
By Esther Schindler
This is an undeniably beautiful coffee table book, which shows plenty of photos for bathroom design in Asian countries (Japan, China, Thailand, etc). If what you want is an overview demonstrating how gorgeous a bathroom can be, given an unlimited budget and (often) a lot of space, then you'll probably find this a five-star book.

That wasn't what I was hoping for, however, so I'm personaly a little disappointed. First, when you can buy the finest (such as lots of marble) then it's easy to create something beautiful. For my purposes... as a new homeowner, I've been considering doing one of my bathrooms with an Asian theme. This book didn't give me much in the way of ideas for that. On the other hand, it's so pretty that I don't really mind.

Parallel Programming: for Multicore and Cluster Systems, by Thomas Rauber, Gudula Rünger

Innovations in hardware architecture, like hyper-threading or multicore processors, mean that parallel computing resources are available for inexpensive desktop computers. In only a few years, many standard software products will be based on concepts of parallel programming implemented on such hardware, and the range of applications will be much broader than that of scientific computing, up to now the main application area for parallel computing.

Rauber and Rünger take up these recent developments in processor architecture by giving detailed descriptions of parallel programming techniques that are necessary for developing efficient programs for multicore processors as well as for parallel cluster systems and supercomputers. Their book is structured in three main parts, covering all areas of parallel computing: the architecture of parallel systems, parallel programming models and environments, and the implementation of efficient application algorithms. The emphasis lies on parallel programming techniques needed for different architectures.

The main goal of the book is to present parallel programming techniques that can be used in many situations for many application areas and which enable the reader to develop correct and efficient parallel programs. Many examples and exercises are provided to show how to apply the techniques. The book can be used as both a textbook for students and a reference book for professionals. The presented material has been used for courses in parallel programming at different universities for many years.

A CLASSIC & INSIGHTFUL SURVEY OF PARALLEL PROGRAMMING
By Reza Toghraee
This book is great academic quality survey of modern parallel programming. It starts with a brief and yet thorough overview of architecture and recent innovations of the multicore processors. To name a few, the book picks a glance at Intel, AMD, Sun T-series, and IBM Power processors. Followed by that, a short introduction into performance analysis as well as parallel design patterns are presented. Numerous references (often academic journals) are also provided throughout the book.

The book then quickly reviews MPI-1 and MPI-2, which are the most popular Distributed Memory models. I'd taken courses in parallel programming back in the graduate school and used both MPI and OpenMP; however this brief chapter on message passing was simply incredible. Shared memory using POSIX threads and a hint at how to implement different parallel patterns (such as consumer-producer, pipelining, thread pools, and task pools) are followed. The book goes further and addresses Java threads and OpenMP. The final chapter is algorithms for linear systems and works out a few examples like Gaussian elimination...

I found it an invaluable up to date book. Yet it's a survey of parallel programming, aiming at the more experienced programmers, either coming from industry or scientific computing world.

A strong overview for parallel programming, but a bit outdated and unfriendly for beginners
By jmhal
First I should say that I did not finish the book yet. I'm still on chapter 4, but my thoughts might be useful for other potential readers. If you disconsiders GPU and other accelerators, this book is a complete overview about parallel programming. The reader who manage to go through all the 440 pages of content will surely be able to work in any field of academia or industry that involves parallel programming. Its greatest strength lies on the chapters about Message Passing Programming, Thread Programming, and Algorithms for Systems of Linear Equations. So you learn the technology and how to apply it for real life problems. A new chapter regarding GPGPU and accelerators would make the book the perfect match, let's hope that a new edition will solve this.

Now, the weaknesses. For a title that bears the word Programming, it is not acceptable that there is not any real code until chapter five. The reader has to read 200 pages before doing any coding. Not that theses pages are useless, because they are not. I just think that you don't need to learn so much about architecture and perfomance analysis before start coding. And there are a lot of topics about interconnection networks and routing/switching that, unless you are programming for a real Top500 supercomputer, are not that useful. If you are coding for a general Ethernet based cluster, you can safely postpone learning that.

In the end, it's a great intermediate to advanced book on the topic. If you are really interested in traditional supercomputers, this book is for you. But for a beginner or someone looking for accelerators and GPU, I would not recommend it.

But Cayden is increasingly troubled by his "elsewhens," the uncontrolled moments when he is plunged into visions of the possible futures. He fears that his Fae gift will forever taint his friendships; his friends fear that his increasing distance will destroy him.

But worldly success follows them—an apparent loss in the Trials leads to Touchstone being selected to travel to the Continent with a Royal Embassy to collect Prince Ashgar's new bride. They are the first theater artists to appear outside Albeyn for at least seventy years—for magic is suspect and forbidden elsewhere, and the Kingdom's easy race mixing and magic use horrifies the people they are to travel among.

The Who go on tour -- in a fantasy book
By Clay Kallam
I’m guessing Melanie Rawn is a fan of the Who.

In “Elsewhens” (Tor, $15.99, 400 pages), the second installment in the Glass Thorns series, Rawn tracks the ups and downs of Touchstone, a four-man band of touring artists who are led by an enormously talented writer with a large nose (read Pete Townshend), who are inspired by an unreliable (if not crazy) but enormously talented member (read Keith Moon), whose front man is incredibly handsome (read Roger Daltrey) and whose fourth member is solid as a rock (read John Entwhistle).
Rawn sets this quartet on a world with magic – these four perform dramas that are fueled by that magic, which allows four people to put on complete shows – and then sends them off, in “Elsewhens,” to tour another continent.

OK, there’s more to “Elsewhens” than the British Invasion of the ‘60s, as Rawn has given her Townshend figure a troubling magical ability to see potential futures, most of which end up with the Moon figure dead, dying or a miserable drug addict (and Moon did die of a drug overdose). The relationship between these two is really the focus of the first two books in the four-book series, and it’s complicated by their devotion to alcohol and a complex drug called thorn, which apparently combines the impact of heroin, cocaine and methamphetamines depending on how it’s made.

This constant harping on the rapidly changing emotional states of the two protagonists – complicated, of course, by their relationships with women and other band members – gets in the way of enjoying Rawn’s carefully built world (there are Giants, Wizards, Goblins and other races) and a plot that could be a lot more interesting if it were more front and center.
And for me, at least, there’s too much time spent on the many negatives of drug abuse, as I can find plenty of that just reading the morning paper.

Boring and Weird
By Brandon Zarzyczny
I really disliked this book, mainly because it was so boring and nothing really happened. In the first book I loved how different it was, where the characters were a traveling theater troupe, using their potentially devastating magic to instead entertain. Even though nothing happened in the first book I didn't really mind, I was there for the originality of the story and the interplay between the characters. I just thought that the action would pick up in the second book, especially with how it ended. However, the story definitely doesn't pick up in Elsewhens, and instead it slows down. Even worse, since all of the characters have already been introduced in the previous book, this book instead focuses on destroying their friendships. Also, there's some really odd parts of this book, especially scenes that seem really homosexual in nature, even though the author goes out of her way to say they aren't at all gay. Mainly with the two main characters talking about their penises, and who they're having sex with, at one point the one viewpoint character berates the other for jerking off next to him in the bathroom, because the fans love to see the bulge in his pants (it's all very awkward and weird). There's even a crossdressing scene at one point that seemed completely pointless. My biggest gripe though, is definitely that nothing happened in the story, and it took awhile to get through because it wasn't entertaining at all to read. The author even again towards the end tries to act like something big is going to happen in the next book, so you better keep reading it. For me though, I'm probably giving up on the series.

Theater As A Social Force
By William Bentrim
Touchstone was the first book in this thought provoking trilogy. It was a behind the scenes look at theatrical production powered not by animation but magic. Touchstone is a theatre group struggling for success and identity. In this volume, Touchstone has had some success but made some enemies and allies in the process.

Political intrigue is introduced in this book. It is not apparent who is behind it until the final pages and then it is dealt with circumspectly. This book shows more depth on the characters and explains Cayden Silversun's elsewhens. His elsewhens might be described as precognition of a limited nature. Cayden is particularly concerned with the elsewhens referring to his glisker, Mieka.

Cayden feels that what Touchstone can do through theater is nothing less than change his society. Again societal ills are shown such as discrimination, drug abuse, prejudice, poverty and more.

This is the second book in the trilogy, I look forward to reading the rest of the series.

I recommend the book.

Authorized Personnel Only (Suze Figueroa), by Barbara D'Amato

For Chicago cop Suze Figueroa, home is a sanctuary, a quiet refuge from the crime, corruption, and tragedy she encounters everyday on the job. The creaky old Victorian house she shares with her little boy, her invalid sister, and her sister's family seems far removed from the threats and dangers of the mean city streets.. . . or so she believes.

The truth is far more terrifying, for, unknown to Suze, a stranger has moved into the house: an intruder who waits in the attic by day and prowls her home at night, spying on both the unsuspecting adults and the defenseless children. While Suze spends her work day tracking down an elusive serial killer, she has no idea that a much more personal danger lives under her own roof, eating her food, handling her gun, and watching her loved ones....

Strips of yellow tape may keep curious bystanders away from crimes scenes, but nothing so simple can protect Suze and her family from the menace that has invaded the privacy--and the safety--of their own home.

Amazon.com Review
An outbreak of E. coli has thinned the detective ranks of the Chicago police department, so officer Suze Figueroa has been detached to temporary duty investigating a couple of bodies that turned up under the elevated train tracks. The location is a stone's throw from the precinct headquarters, and the killings are similar enough in modus operandi to make Suze wonder if there's a serial killer preying on the homeless. She's still working her regular caseload, which includes a pickpocket who's been targeting women shoppers at the luxury department stores on the Miracle Mile and a thief who robbed a currency exchange. And this is not to mention managing a few complications on the home front, including her sister Sheryl's agonizingly slow recovery from a serious accident and a dangerous pederast who's hiding in her attic. The plucky policewoman's personal and professional lives collide with violent and startling results in the penultimate pages of this somewhat unfocused crime thriller. Barbara D'Amato's pacing isn't as strong here as it's been in her previous outings (Good Cop, Bad Cop, Killer.app), and the murderer's identity is telegraphed well in advance of the denouement. What's more important, the reader never gets under Suze's skin enough to know what motivates her. But it's a good enough effort to keep D'Amato's hometown fans in Chicago happy until the next one comes along. --Jane Adams

From Publishers Weekly
HDon't read this book with your back to the cellar door! Although this third in the Suze Figueroa series starts out as a Chicago police procedural, the mood grows eerie as the pages fly by. Officer Figueroa and her partner, Norm Bennis, are handling their usual pickpockets and burglars when a sizable number of the force's detectives are incapacitated by a bout of food poisoning after a banquet. Temporarily promoted to detective, Suze and Norm must quickly track down a serial killer and a child molester before each has a chance to strike again. The murderer targets the homeless, getting them drunk and suffocating each by a different method. Undetected, the child molester secrets himself in Figueroa's large house to revenge her interruption of an earlier crime. He prefers preteen females, gleefully finding two of them, Figueroa's nieces, in the house. The policewoman's son, J.J., is just trying to survive preadolescence with a mother who must be gone more and more as the murders multiply. Police profiler Jody Huffington and a Northwestern University psychiatrist, Dr. Ho, help the temporary detectives to understand the minds of serial killers and child molesters. The denouement cuts close to the cops' lives and is written in such terrifying terms readers will find it easyDno, mandatoryDto stay up all night to finish the book. (Dec. 7) Forecast: Anthony and Agatha Award-winner D'Amato, Mystery Writers of America president for 1999-2000, handles a tired theme, the psychopathic killer, more tastefully than most. If booksellers emphasize this to prospective buyers, the title could attract readers who love suspense but not gore.

From Booklist
A sure-footed thriller from D'Amato, whose mysteries display a deep but not overbearing knowledge of police prodedure and a lively way with atmosphere. Here, D'Amato introduces a cop team, patrol officer Suze Figueroa and her black partner, Norm Bennis. The pairing of Irish-Hispanic Figueroa and an African American partner seems a bit too calculated, making for some stilted dialogue and situations, but D'Amato's plotting wins the day. The street cops are assigned to detective detail, looking for a serial killer of homeless people, after E. coli fells detectives at a retirement banquet. A much greater menace awaits Figueroa at the home she shares with her son, her disabled sister, and her sister's family: a pychopath has entered the large Victorian house, observing the family undetected, awaiting his chance to kill. D'Amato manages to make this bizarre situation chillingly believable, playing off Figueroa's on-the-job competence against her ignorance of how vulnerable she truly is. A marvelously paced double mystery. Connie Fletcher

Procedural fans will enjoy this book
By Kinsey Millhone
Barbara D'Amato's HELP ME PLEASE and KILLER.APP were two utterly un-put-downable suspense thrillers. AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY isn't nearly as exciting, but it's interesting as a "week in the life of a cop." Suze Figueroa and her partner Bennis are two patrol officers who are given the chance to become acting detectives when many of Chicago's finest are struck down by food poisoning following a banquet. They are faced with solving the murder of several homeless people, despite the fact that the department doesn't want to grant them resources due to the low status of the victims. At the same time, a child molester has moved into the attic of the home Suze shares with her sister's family, and is waiting for the right moment to attack Suze's young niece. Will Suze discover the intruder before it's too late?
I missed the heart-pounding suspense of D'Amato's previous Chicago cop books, but I did enjoy AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY as a police procedural. The author has obviously done a tremendous amount of research and I learned a lot. As a longtime fan, I must say that any D'Amato is worth reading -- she's a solid, reliably good crime writer.

Most thrilling police procedural novel ever!
By Eric Abrosian
Don't read this book when you're home alone at night. It's scary. AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY maintains suspense throughout, while being very realistic, in that the police officers are dealing with several cases as once, as real police do. The author skillfully moves between three different cases that come officer Suze Figueroa's way. The perpertator in one case has invaded Suze's own home, living in the attic of the big old wooden house, watching the family's every move from the back staircase and creeping out at night to steal food and torment Suze's paralyzed sister.
This book has every indication of becoming a smash motion picture. Remember, Eric told you so.
Meanwhile, why wait for the movie to come out? I loved the author's previous KILLER.APP. This new book is fabulous!

Great police procedural
By A Customer
Chicago police officer Suze Figueroa and her partner Norm Bennis know how ugly the city streets can become. The duo deals with crime, mostly petty in nature, on a daily basis. However, Suze and Norm soon find themselves involved in an even uglier scenario when much of the Second City's detective force call in sick with food poisoning following the retirement dinner of the chief detective.

Suze and Norm are temporally promoted to help work the crisis. The brass assigns them two nasty cases: a serial killer and a pediophile. The murderer uses the homeless as his prey while the molester relishes attacking pre-teen aged girls.

Even more now than when she patrolled, Suze sees her home as her castle of normalcy, a place for her to relax and regain her soul. Unbeknownst to the dedicated cop is that the pediophile has moved into her home living in her attic while learning more about his adversary with a plan to punish her for disturbing one of his felonies.

The subplots starring a serial killer and a pediophile sound trite as they have been overkilled over the past few years. However, in the hands of the award winning Barbara D'Amato both themes seem so fresh readers will believe AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY has introduced new concepts. The story line is a combination police procedural and thriller, but what makes it so good is the depth to the characters, especially Suze, whose professional and personal lives are opened up like a book for the reader to peruse and understand. Rarely do police novels attain that level of excellence as this tale does.

A Possible World, by Kenneth Koch

"For the last thirty years or more, Kenneth Koch has been writing the most exuberant poems in America. In an arena where such good spirits are rare, he has become a national treasure. In his book of personal addresses to what has mattered most in his seventy-plus years on the planet, there is a dimension of pathos and joy rare in the poetry of any era." —National Book Award (2000) finalist citation for New Addresses

The three long poems -- “Bel Canto,” “Possible World,” and “A Memoir” -- in this brilliant successor to New Addresses are ambitious attempts at rendering the complete story of a life. Taken together they present a dazzling picture of the pleasures and confusions of existence, as well as the pleasures and difficulties of expressing them.

Other poems bring Koch’s questioning, lyrical attention to more particular aspects of experience, real and imagined—a shipboard meeting, the Moor not taken, or the unknowable realm of mountaintops. As in all of Koch’s work, one hears the music of unconquerable exuberance in stormy conflict with whatever resists it—death, the injustice of power, the vagaries of life in Thailand, China, or Rome.

Thomas Disch has written in the Boston Book Review that “Koch is the most capable technician on the American scene, the brightest wit, and the emeritus most likely to persist into the next millennium . . . His work is full of ribaldry and wit, musicianship, pitch-perfect mimicry of the Great Tradition, and the celebration of pleasure for its own sunlit sake.”

The ebullience and stylistic variety that one has come to expect of this protean poet is everywhere present in this scintillating collection.

From Publishers Weekly
Koch passed away this summer at 77 after a battle with leukemia, having recently produced some of the strongest work of his career: 2000's New Addresses (an NBA finalist). These two volumes-one of new work and one of poems that preceded his 1960 debut Ko, or A Season on Earth-show Koch at his various best. Sun Out catches Koch assembling the dictions (and plentiful exclamation points) he would later synthesize into his distinctive hall of linguistic mirrors, yet these '50s poems, like those of Koch's New York School brethren Ashbery and O'Hara, speak remarkably directly to our own "circumstances the Afghanistan flowers/ The feet under the hue of/ The mid-Atlantic." The long poem "When the Sun Tries to Go On" looks back to Stevens's "The Comedian as the Letter C," and forward to O'Hara's "Second Avenue." A Possible World's one-act verse plays, one-line poems, autobiographical reminiscences and long, mock-Byronic narratives display Koch's verve and light touch, but are unmistakably colored by requiem. The opening "Bel Canto" gives thanks "For love itself, and friendship its co-agent" in the ottava rima of Koch's long poem Ko, while "Variations on Home and Abroad" returns to Ko's thoughts about national origins. "To Buddhism" harks back to last year's New Addresses, and introduces the short poems about European and Asian travel that comprise much of the book. Those poems combine autobiographical nostalgia with a trademark whimsy: "The Acropolis has a uniform/ That no schoolboy can wear because it is invisible./ 'It goes to the Periclean School!' " The title poem's typographical festival pays Mallarm an homage to "Mondo universal collectivity/ Mondo aggrandizement/ Mondo nothing left to teach," while the concluding "A Memoir," finds, wryly, "Someone is singing/ On the landing below/ The arc strike of a pen on paper/ Doesn't put one in the show." Koch, as these two books amply demonstrate, most definitely remains in our collective performance. (Oct. 19)

From Library Journal
Given Koch's recent death at the age of 77, it is entirely fitting that his last collection, A Possible World, ends with a poem titled "A Memoir" that explores the entire concept of revisiting one's life (as poets so often do). "What shall I put in my memoir/ Kansas City/ Got off bus to get a haircut there, " muses the poet in lines that typify his style: off the cuff, vernacular, a bit tongue in cheek. That style has been evident throughout his distinguished career (he's won a host of awards, including the first Phi Beta Kappa Award for poetry, and was a National Book Award finalist in 2000 for New Addresses), and it's a pleasure to see him in good fighting form here. Though these poems were written near the end of Koch's life, they aren't terribly overcast or elegiac, and despite the final poem, he seems less interested in exploring his own life than in chronicling a whole array of "possible worlds." It is particularly instructive to read this book in conjunction with Sun Out, a collection of early poems that Koch observed "are in such a different style that they never seemed to fit into my books." Koch was hanging out with a lot of painters at the time, and these poems do have more concrete imagery and perhaps tamer lines than his other works, but Koch's classic snap, crackle, and pop are still there. These books serve as fine testimonials to an important American poet and should be considered by most libraries.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* In his glorious final work, Koch returns to classical forms to express his profound yet bemused gratitude for life, however strange and imperfect. Still whimsical--he can't resist going all out in the blithely funny and typographically effervescent "Possible World"--but more gracious and philosophical than ever before, the poet visits the Acropolis, Rome, and Kuala Lumpur, and muses on how varied life is, how quickly the dead are gone, and how long the influence of lovers and friends is felt. Wryly and affectionately reflective, teasingly subversive, and still vitally curious and joyfully creative, Koch brings all his wisdom and artistry to "A Memoir," a charmingly and deeply affecting poem that embraces the dark and the light, a chiming, indelible song of himself, of every self. Hilarious and brilliant
By Jonathan Mayhew
This book contains the hilarious poem "Possible World," a sort of parody of Mallarmé's "Un coup de dés," along with a brilliant memoir and several delightful shorter poems. "The Moor not taken" is also very funny. Buy it together with "Sun Out" to see the very early and the very late Koch side by side.

A Brilliant Follow-up
By A Customer
Koch has followed up his tremendous last collection "New Addresses" with this brilliant collection in which we see the full of range of the powers that made him one of the giants of American poetry - Bell Canto, in Koch's oft-used Ottava Rima, further solidifies his place as a great master of the form.

The Grotesque (Vintage Contemporaries), by Patrick McGrath

This exuberantly spooky novel, in which horror, repressed eroticism, and sulfurous social comedy intertwine like the vines in an overgrown English garden, is now a major motion picture, starring Alan Bates, Sting, and Theresa Russell.

From Publishers Weekly
Witty, weird and highly enjoyable, this gothic British tale is aptly titled. The set-up is macabre: a distinguished paleontologist is brain-damaged and slowly turning into a vegetable. He cannot speak, but narrates an interior monologue of all he sees and hears: a lot of sexual shenanigans and a particularly grisly murder, all centered around "Fledge," the butler, who has ambitions. The stylistic joke is that all these horrors take place in a quaint, genteel English country setting, where the village is "Pock-on-the-Fling," the pub, "The Hodge and Purlet" and the barrister, "Sir Fleckley Tome." However deadly the deed, the language is always decorous and impeccably mannered. The result is strangely hilarious--as if a Stephen King story were being told in the manner of a latter-day Anthony Trollope.

Magnificently grim ... [McGrath] serves up this cold slice of modern Gothic with the deranged relish of a Poe but also the acrid irony of a Waugh.

Review
... Mr. McGrath expertly uses the sort of thriller devices popularized by Alfred Hitchcock: he's constantly showing us the danger faced by his characters, even when they themselves seem blissfully unaware of their situation; and he's constantly pointing out the psychological underpinnings of those situations, linking sex with guilt and guilt with punishment and evil. -- The New York Times Book Review, Michiko Kakutani

an early McGrath work lacking intensity
By lazza
McGrath's popular works (Spider, Asylum, Dr. Haggard's Disease) are known for being compact, psychological dramas with a paranormal twist. These novels exhibit not only intriguing stories but also show the effectiveness of writing in the first person. The Grotesque is McGrath's first novel. Although it shows the promise of his capabilities as an author, the book does not compare to his later works.
The Grotesque is a relatively light-hearted "gothic comedy". It contains the requisite spooky house, sinister butler, a murder, and some strange happenings. But it is all rather tongue-in-cheek. This comedy aspect disarms the scary elements, which all seems to trivialize the novel. It comes off as a good made-for-TV movie script, and not a serious novel. In fact the characterizations in The Grotesque are surprisingly weak.
So The Grotesque is a "McGrath-light" sort of novel. I recommend seeing the film version of it, which is probably available on video, and invest your time on his other novels.

The Butler Did It---Or Did He?
By Amazon Customer
This is McGrath's first book, and it's a good one. A goof on the familiar Gothic novel, it tells the story of the hostile take-over of a creepy old estate by the owner's butler. However, since the narrator is in a state of complete paralysis, and quite possibly insane, his story is suspect. Is the butler really doing the nasty with Sir Hugo's wife? Who murdered the insipid fiance of Sir Hugo's daughter and fed him to the estate's pigs? What REALLY happened in Sir Hugo's barn workshop the day he became paralyzed?
A black comedy of murder and manners, THE GROTESQUE provides us with the requsite gloomy mansion, a dismal swamp, a suspicious servant, bad plumbing, and a possible inspiration for Thomas Harris's HANNIBAL. I recommend it.

Did the butler really do it?
By A Customer
Having picked up this book rather randomly, I was pleasantly surprised to find a well written modern gothic tale. Narrated by an aristocrat who is confined to a wheelchair, the reader is never sure if his opinions are the ramblings of a man with an overactive imagination or an accurate account of the hostile takeover of his estate by a devious butler. Sir Hugo's observations and insights are always suspect but very entertaining. A masterpiece of black humor. McGrath is a great storyteller.
