Wildlife and Nature

This book has the usual stuff in the beginning of it, the bits that teach you basic drawing and how to learn, etc. So, really, you could learn drawing from any of them. I actually have this on my NOOK Tablet and it's got great little projects on nature/landscape as well as wild animals. All of Lee Hammond's books are great, you can't go wrong with any of them and this one is in keeping with the rest. Also, I have all of these books for a good reason. In my case, creative lows are made so much easier by just doing the project drawings in these books. If there's something specific you're having trouble with, you can look it up with this many books, that's important for self-taught artists like me, you need reference material. The dry spells come along whether we like it or not, so do these projects to keep your skills sharp in-between drawings, paintings, etc.

Getting in touch with nature

In this review we get back to basics so to speak and take a look at what can be seen as a very traditional artists practice, Sketching animals in nature.

The book presents itself as a beginners guide to sketching a variety of animals from birds and common animals, to exotic big cats and undersea dwellers. It contains the usual introduction of basic techniques as well as materials needed to accomplish the tasks. There are a variety of exercises that take the reader through the sketching process from basic (construction via basic shapes) and the more advanced (sketching differing kinds of realistic fur).

One of the central exercises has the readers making a grid around the reference image and on the destination page and then drawing the animal box by box, breaking it down into abstract shapes. While I don't have any issue with learning about how to break and image down into component shapes, I find this particular exercise problematic for beginners as it is far to detail oriented at the expense of the big picture. This becomes an issue when many young artists already suffer from drawing perceptions that are far too concerned with the minutiae of a drawing instead a solid understanding of the basics. That being said, I find that in practice the grid exercise is extremely useful when trying to understand the complexity of animal anatomy.

The book really hits on a core theme that artists often forget, and that is to "Be easy on yourself and just enjoy the process". This statement rings true for the novice and seasoned alike, especially as your career gets going and you begin to become more and more end result oriented. This theme is carried throughout the book, with the structure of its varied exercises coupled with the author's observations of roadblocks that artists find themselves facing.

Another aspect of the book that I really enjoyed was its section on before and after sketches that highlighted how much improved the student's drawings were after they took their time and went through the exercises.

I believe that this book is worthwhile if you are uninitiated to the world of sketching animals or just need a refresher in your sketching process.

Outstanding techniques for Graphite Drawing

This is an outstanding book for the novice to the more advanced. It is filled with techniques and illustrations that cover a wide variety of ways to make your art work more realistic. The book is about 8x10 in size, hard cover, with 144 pages of step-by-step illustrations. The cover states 30 start-to-finish demos on a variety of critters (animals, birds, tigers, reptiles, squirrels, turtles, etc.).

Lessons include drawing eyes, fur, feathers, antlers, etc. Tips on landscape (meadows, woodlands, mountains, skies, etc.) are included. Many proven techniques are demonstrated using graphite sketches so you can really see the detail in fur, skin texture, etc.-like the turtle's skin, the chimp's skin and wrinkles, the depth of fur on a squirrel, etc.

Basic principles are covered, such as materials, shading, blending, seeing and sketching the basic shapes in critters and nature, drawing, basic composition and elements of nature, skies, clouds, sunsets, trees, silhouettes, simple to complex scenes, grass, leaves, water, rocks, reflections, animal characteristics, basic shapes in animals, using black and white, drawing eyes, fur, create texture, long fur, curly layered fur, draw lion, tiger, cheetah, drawing segments, using contrast and balance in a composition, skin textures, wrinkles and folds, land animals (wolves, squirrels, fox, armadillo, etc), draw a wolf in foggy woods, lilly frog, water animals in aquatic settings with light patterns in water (hippo, otter, dolhins, turtles), and birds (seagull, flamingo, dove, swan, owl, robin, macaw).

The book is loaded and is an outstanding value for the budding artist. Most of the book is visual, assisted by sufficient written explanation. I bought this for a close friend who paints, but needs to improve technique. She was thrilled! I do not paint or draw, but have no doubt that if I wanted to, this book would help me significantly. This author is wonderful and I am already ordering another one of her books for my girlfriend.

An excellent book destined for the Movies

This book has all the elements of a solid movie: Hero, lady friend, lady friend, disabled son, almost-but-not-quite sympathetic bad guy also with lady friend/accomplice. In the tradition of Stephen Coonts, Dale Brown, and Tom Clancy, Ridley Pearson has crafted an edge of your seat thriller. I literally did not put this book down if I had even a minute of spare time to read! The only weakness I found is that it simply wasn't long enough! I wanted more.

The word for the day is "potboiler"

Ridley Pearson cranks out detective-thriller novels at a breakneck pace, and in doing so consistently demonstrates above-average skills in terms of crafting interesting plots that always include some exciting twists and turns. He also manages to make his characters seem truly human, and to his credit, even goes to some lengths to "get inside the heads" of his female characters as well as the males, something that a lot of male detective writers simply fail to do.
So far, so good. The problem is that although Pearson is a decent enough writer, the overall style of his prose is very simple with almost a "dumbed down" quality to it. I suspect that this is not because of any intellectual shortcomings on his part (he spent some time at Oxford, apparently), but is a deliberate gambit aimed at broadening his audience and hence maximizing the sales of his books. That's fine, I suppose, but I finished the book with a feeling that the writing was uninspired and calculatedly middlebrow. Consequently, overall Pearson's work suffers by comparison to such gifted contemporary mystery writers as Michael Connelly and Dennis Lehane.
The story itself in this book is quite gripping, as it deals with issues surrounding the sabotage of airliners and the security apparatus designed to prevent such acts of terror. What I did not care for was Pearson's creation of villains whose terrorism is carried out in the name of the "green" cause. Whether this is intended or not, Pearson succeeds in making "radical environmentalists" appear dangerous and looney, a theme that plays right into the hands of contemporary politicians who would love nothing more than to have environmentalism generally discredited.

Pearson's Best

Ridley Pearson's "Hard Fall" was the first on many that I have had the pleasure of reading. The novel takes off from page one and continues to fly all the way to the suspenseful ending. The premise revolves around FBI agent Cam Daggett trying to stop terrorist Anthony Kort. Kort is a German explosive expert known for a series of plane crashes, on in which Daggett's parents were killed and his son left handicapped. Kort's experience allows him to disable the cockpit crew and use the plane as a missle to crash on a main target.
The action and excitement are pure joy as Pearson slowly brings both Kort and Daggett together. The opening sequence at Dulles Airport is a true nail biter. The character development is very solid down to Daggett's partner Lynn Greene, Daggett's girlfriend Carrie and his son Duncan.
For William Goldman fans look for the a chapter that is truly reminiscent of the novel "Marathon Man". This quick read should be on any Suspense/thriller novel lovers book shelf or to read list.

Well, I'm no longer a Romantic Suspense virgin, and I am so, SO happy that I chose Surrender to be my first - the book was amazing!! ;-)

SECTION 8 is a spin-off of Stephanie's other Romantic Suspense series, but Surrender can easily be read as a stand-alone. There is plenty of back-story provided when needed to make the book flow smoothly, but a word of warning... when you finish Surrender you're going to want to go back and read everything Stephanie has ever written. :)

The book is chock full of suspense, mystery, intrigue, action and romance, and is written so superbly you will be turning pages frantically and swearing under your breath when you're forced to take a break.

Our team of characters - Dare, Grace, Jem, Key, Gunner and Avery are brought together to solve the mystery behind the deaths and disappearances of their loved ones and just make it out the other side alive. Their alliance isn't an easy one, however. Each has their secrets, and there is a lot of mistrust given the covert nature of Section 8 and what's been happening. The uneasy alliance makes for some wicked tension (both romantic and otherwise) and creates an amazing romantic suspense!

The plot twists were wonderful; Stephanie had me shaking my head on several occasions and kept my heart rate up through the majority of the book, and while I'd love to tell you more, I don't do spoilers so you're just going to have to go and check it out for yourself!

There was plenty of set up for the upcoming books in the series as well and I can't wait to see what will happen.

Not what I expected

I'm at a loss of words here...maybe I just set my hopes too high? I loved Stephanie Tyler's Hold Trilogy, Shadow Force and Acro Series. So when I saw she will be releasing a new Romantic Suspense series, I was thrilled.

That feeling disappeared soon after I began reading it.

If you are at all familiar with Stephanie Tyler's writing, you know that she usually weaves in numerous character POV's in her stories. In Surrender, we meet the main hero, Dare. Dare is the son of Darius, a Section 8 operative (A black ops group of loose cannon operatives recruited from various military branches and the CIA). Section 8 has been dis-banned, but seems that their handler/founder is now hunting down and eliminating all the original members and their families.

Dare is a former Seal who is struggling with his own demons due to a mission gone bad during which he was tortured and watched his entire team get slaughtered. He was saved by an Army Ranger, but hasn't been the same since. With the members of Section 8 now being hunted down, and his farther MIA and presumed dead, Dare finds his own life in danger. He finds out that he has a half-sister Avery, who is in the same predicament. Their only way out, so they think, is to kidnap the daughter of the founder and handler of Section 8.

About 13% into the reader finally gets introduced to Grace, the main heroine. Dare kidnaps Grace with the hopes of using her as leverage against her father, but everything is not at all how it seems.

In between the story that takes place between Dare and Grace, we get the POVs of Avery and Jem (Jeremiah). We also meet Jem's brother Key, who is the Ranger that saved Dare's life, and Gunner, the mysterious owner of a tattoo shop. There is a lot of world building that takes place, and we learn more about each character.

Now the plot itself sounded very promising. Unfortunately for me, it just fell flat. I could not connect to the characters or the story. I honestly struggled to finish this book just to see if it gets better at the end...it didn't. Dare and Grace's relationship was not very interesting to me. Their interaction and even the love scenes between the 2 were uninspiring and lukewarm at best. I didn't really see what their connection was. It seemed sudden and rushed. I struggled to get into the book from the very beginning, and then as it progressed I found my interest waning more and more.

This might have been the case of "been there-read that" for me. It also might have been the case of my expectations being too high going into this, I'm not even sure. It pains me to give a this book a less than stellar rating, but it just didn't work for me.

I will read the next book in the series, in the hopes that it gets better. But I think I'll wait to get it from the library, instead of adding it to my auto-buy list.

Perhaps readers that haven't read a lot of Romantic Suspense would enjoy this

Great romantic suspense

When you think of a Section 8, you think of some mental disorder, craziness and being discharged out of the military, which is exactly what those behind the Section 8 black ops group created. It consisted of seven men and one woman recruited from various military branches and the CIA and all had a little bit of crazy in them, many were getting discharged out of the military and they were snapped up by the handler that took care of all the missions. No one was supposed to know who the handler was, then and now. However his name is getting out and in the last few years there has been a clean sweep order to keep is identity under wraps.

Over the last six years those with ties to Section 8 including their families were gone, accidents and unexplained deaths were killing those with even the smallest connection. Darius O'Rourke was part of the original eight and his son Dare knew that they were both on that list, his father has been missing for a year and Dare was supposed to have died a year ago in the jungle, however someone saved his life, at a very high price.

Dare knew that S8 had officially disbanded when he was thirteen and for years the members worked missions on their own, until they got a call and the remaining six members had one last job, four men never returned with only Adele and Darius coming back alive, however they were never the same. Now Adele was visiting Dare, coming to a place where he never has visitors; after he almost died he has been alone for a year with his nightmares. Adele tells him that his half sister needs him and he will have to come out of hiding to help her.

As he rescues his sister Avery, they travel to New Orleans where they start to find others as they come to find answers, Gunner, Key, Jem and Grace all have something in common and they are all facing death unless they come to some kind of understanding and work together to find the one man that wants his secrets to die with them.

This book is full of action, adventure and all the fun of tortured alpha men and women just at tough. It should also be noted that the blurb on the back only talks about his half sister, this is not who Dare has a romance with; the author even writes a side note about this on GoodReads, the blurb seems to be missing a major player in this romantic suspense. However, blurb aside, this was a great book and I am so excited it is the start of a new series. I love how the story kept me guessing until the end, the plot twists are page turning material. There were several surprises as the ending came and I liked how I never saw them coming.

The characters all fit the perfect black ops profile, all with questionable and secret pasts, tortured souls and they all had a bit of "crazy" in their personalities, they all had this adrenaline rush they would experience when they would do something just a little off, and it happened to all of them, a personality quirk that the author wrote in to each one. I would have liked more information about how Dare is dealing with his nightmares, as this was something that immobilized him for a year, it seemed glossed over when all the action hit, and I am not sure when any of them slept as there was so much going on. I also was confused when Key and Jem go to their family home to pick up a Jeep that had been in a shed for years, and it just started right away, maybe more will be explained in each of their stories. Otherwise the story flowed well as we go from one heart stopping moment to another.

The romance between Grace and Dare was heartfelt and I enjoyed the chemistry between the two, even though they could not trust each other at first as they each have all these secrets. I liked each of the other characters that they collected along the way to help thwart the bad guy, they all had

something in common as they form this tenuous group. I look forward to getting to know each one in future books, the back stories are all intriguing and I can't wait to hear about their tortured pasts, I love those tortured heroes.

All in all this is a wonderful action packed story and a series that I will continue with. I am not sure whose story is next, however I will take any of them as they are all interesting characters.

Excellent

This book is excellent. All topics are fully explained in a relaxed, conversational style. Many clear, fully worked examples supplement the reading. The topics are well organized. There is a definite "and here is where this is used in practice" and "here is the important concept to remember" tone throughout the book that is very helpful. I highly recommend this text to both students and those who are learning on their own.

I have been reading about spectral estimation lately and accidentally found this book. I looked through the rest of the book which looks quite reader friendly but really got me was chapter 10 on Power Spectral density. This seemingly simple subject is really quite confusing what with deterministic signals, random ones, periodogram and correlogram and then many variants both parametric and non-parametric. They derive an equivalence between the periodogram and the correlation method showing exactly when that is so. The authors do a superb job, the best I have seen on the topic. Very impressive book.

This is one of the worst texts I've had to use in my 6 years of engineering education. There are almost no relevant examples in this book and the homework problems stray far from the material in the text. Many fundamental steps are glossed over or skipped, leaving the student without the intuition to solve problems that stray from the norm.

Horrifying villains, relatively little offsetting chemistry between heroine and hero

Elizabeth Essex is a great writer, and I heartily recommend many of her books - but this one leaves a lot to be desired. The heroine is a typical, and typically pleasing, spunky resistor of Regency norms. She is also a devoted sister, which is how she finds herself in an engagement with a much older, and not very appealing local lord, Lord Aldridge. I enjoyed the set up of this novel a lot, and really loved the meeting between the heroine and hero. Our heroine, Antigone, punches a handsy young man on the dance floor at a ball, and retreats to the library. The hero is William Jellicoe, a character we met in "Almost a Scandal". (I loved that novel, and although Jellicoe had only a small role, I was very happy to meet him as a grown man.) He, too, wants to get away from the stultifying atmosphere of the ball, and makes his way to the library. The two engage in a lovely conversation that establishes their connection as friends (how great is that?!?), and ultimately go on to pursue a night of adventure, with a dollop of sexual chemistry. Wonderful! But sadly the novel does not maintain this level of charm and engagement.

**Spoilers to follow** Although Jellicoe is clearly enamored by Antigone, and pursues a relationship with her, he apparently thinks it's obvious that they won't marry because of his naval career. This obliviousness doesn't make sense, given his reliable and honorable character. Antigone falls in love with Will, but she, too, knows he won't marry her. This, too, doesn't quite make sense to me. And even as Antigone and Will's relationship continues to develop, Antigone's engagement with Aldridge is maintained. The more we learn about him, the worse he seems. At first, he's cold and controlling. Then, for a while, Antigone believes he's marrying her just for her horse. She's unhappy upon learning this, but at least it gives Aldridge a motive for wanting to marry her, which he had thus far been lacking. But then it turns out that Aldridge is actually a pedophile who finds boys in London to use for sexual gratification. Apparently this fact is widely know by his peers, but no one admits it or does anything about it. I don't know if this is a possibility in Regency England. Perhaps it's perfectly historically accurate. But it makes for pretty heavy going in a romance novel.

Moreover, the horrors don't end there. Finally, we learn that Aldridge had actually wanted to marry Antigone when she was 12 because she was a boyish girl. Her father refused multiple offers from Aldridge, but Antigone's mother was open to making a match between them. When Antigone's father dies, that opens the door for the mother to take up Aldridge's offer, even though she knows exactly who Aldridge is, what he does, and why he wants to marry Antigone. Antigone's father is described in the book as loving and wonderful, but also financially irresponsible. Her mother is presented as shallow and anxious about money and station. By the end, the mother is revealed as a moral monster, wholly willing to pimp out her daughter to another monster in order to secure her own well-being. I found it deeply unpleasant reading, as well as more than a little confusing. Supposedly, Antigone's parents loved each other. If her father was a deeply decent person, how can the sociopathic nature of his wife have escaped his notice? And how have Antigone and her sister lived normal, happy, healthy lives in the care of such a person? The moral psychology here makes no sense at all.

So please - do yourself a favor and go read "A Sense of Sin" or "The Danger of Desire", and give this one a pass.

You cannot buy me, what I will not sell

Antigone Preston has aspirations, plans and anticipates a life after she finds a husband for her beloved sister. Antigone never thought her mother was contractually obligating her to marry a man old enough to be her father. It is supposed to be fiction not fact so that everyone gets want they want, but can that happen.

The plans were going swimmingly until Antigone met William Jellicoe and every thought but gazing upon his handsome face left her mind. Will was a Commander in Her Majesty's service and in a bit of limbo deciding where to go next with his career. For the moment, the only decision he wanted to make was how to get Antigone in his life and decide if he wanted to keep her there. The problems that became the explosion that forces everyone to show their true emotions and deepest demons displays true character and the wealth of love between two people.

Elizabeth Essex captures the best and worst within each of us with shining glory and brilliant prose.

Endearing couple

Elizabeth Essex's Breath of Scandal is a breath of fresh air due mostly to her leading characters who are a little unpredictable. Antigone Preston and her sister Cassandra have recently lost their father and they are near penniless. Their mother, a scheming greedy woman, has promised Antigone to their neighbor, Lord Aldridge who is at least a generation older than Antigone. Since her father recently passed, Antigone is able to prevent this engagement from being public but she knows she is on borrowed time and she has no desire to wed the loathsome Lord.

The one positive Lord Aldridge brings into the hushed arrangement is invitations to local balls and events and it is at such a gathering that Antigone causes a scandal by punching a groping young Lord on the dance floor. Her mother is scandalized but Antigone is not and neither is hero Will who admires her spunk. The two have a rousing conversation and both are admiring the finer qualities of the other. Will is charming, roguish and daring. Antigone is brave, a little reckless and loyal to her sister. They become fast friends.

The leads have a romance that starts as an adventure. Will learns that Antigone, who he endearingly calls by her last name, Preston, is self-sufficient. Will is a second son and a naval officer hoping to go back to sea, he does not expect to stay long at his family's estate. Antigone knows this and wants to squeeze all the time she can with Will. Antigone is caught in a fine mess. She does not want to jeopardize her older sister's chances of making a good match by causing a scandal but she just cannot stay away from excitement and she loves spending time with Will.

I liked Antigone. She was forthright for the most part and even though she was a spectacular horsewoman dressing in breeches, she was still feminine and she did not need to prove that she was a strong female by being combative with her male lead. These two knew how to disagree without being disagreeable. She also recognized her strengths and her self worth, two fine traits in a heroine. I look forward to the next book in this series.
