The Survivors, by Will Weaver

Two years ago, the ash started falling like gray snow. The volcanoes had erupted. . . .

For Miles and his sister, Sarah, the real disaster started in the violent aftermath—when they were forced to leave their cushy suburban home and flee to the north woods for safety. Miles got them to a cabin, but now winter is setting in. All they have to get them through is the milk from Sarah’s prized possession—her goat—and Miles’s memory of wilderness survival skills.

When Sarah tries to regain some normalcy by attending the local school, she realizes she is no longer quite the person she used to be. Now she is Goat Girl, a Traveler, and it’s hard to pretend she isn’t. And when a horrific twist of fate robs Miles of his memory, he discovers the heart of his true identity. They knew the volcanoes would change the world. Now, in order to survive, they must change with it.

Will Weaver delivers an extraordinary sequel to Memory Boy, showing that several basic instincts lie deep inside us all: love, fear, and survival.

Cabin in the woods
By Cheryl Stout
I am so glad that author, Will Weaver, wrote this sequel to Memory Boy. I read the first book not long ago and rated it 5 stars but wanted to read about the continuing adventures of the Newell family. Wish granted!

What would you do if you had to leave your nice, comfortable house in the city because volcanic ash is playing havoc with the world's economy and everyone's lifestyles. You could hope that you knew of a cabin in the woods that would provide sanctuary for your family.

Miles, Sarah and their parents spend the winter in a small cabin, learning about the Minnesota woods and growing closer as a family as they face all kinds of dangers, learn new skills, and persevere.

This is a great follow-up to "Memory Boy" and I enjoyed every page of it. It is written as a Young Adult book, I believe, but I'm an older adult and think every age can appreciate it.

A total disappointment...
By jac-bo-bac
Memory Boy was such a good book and I was eagerly awaiting the follow up novel. I was confused almost immediately after starting The Survivors. There were so many new tangents straying from the core of Memory Boy that I checked the internet to make sure I hadn't missed a novel in between the two. IPods, cell phones, school and school buses, internet, jobs, motorcycles, snowmobiles, social interactions, etc. What happened to the need for isolation? What happened to them surviving on their own? What happened to my $8? My suggestion is that you do not waste your money on this book and hold onto the memories Memory Boy gave you.

High hopes faded fast with the sequel
By jenljbear
I loved the first book in this series, Memory Boy. This book I was drawn to, wanting to know how everything turned out. For the first 3/4 of the book I loved it and I was so engrossed in how the family was going to adapt to bemidji. Yet the ending was quite trite and felt rushed. I could not believe that the family would suddenly get up the courage and confront the bullies from Book 1. It just didn't seem realistic that they would do that. Very disappointing ending!

The Oxford History of the British Empire: Volume III: The Nineteenth Century: 3From OUP Oxford

The Oxford History of the British Empire is a major new assessment of the Empire in the light of recent scholarship and the progressive opening of historical records. From the founding of colonies in North America and the West Indies in the seventeenth century to the reversion of Hong Kong to China at the end of the twentieth, British imperialism was a catalyst for far-reaching change. The Oxford History of the British Empire as a comprehensive
study helps us to understand the end of Empire in relation to its beginning, the meaning of British imperialism for the ruled as well as for the rulers, and the significance of the British Empire as a theme in world history.

Volume III of The Oxford History of the British Empire covers the long nineteenth century, from the achievement of American independence in the 1780s to the eve of world war in 1914. This was the period of Britain's greatest expansion as both empire-builder and dominant world power. The volume is divided into two parts. The first contains thematic chapters, some focusing on Britain, others on areas at the imperial periphery, exploring those fundamental dynamics of British expansion
whcih made imperial influence and rule possible. They also examine the economic, cultural, and institutional frameworks whcih gave shape to Britain's overseas empire.

Part 2 is devoted to the principal areas of imperial activity overseas, including both white settler and tropical colonies. Chapters examine how British interests and imperial rule shaped individual regions' nineteenth-century political and socio-economic history. Themes dealt with include the economics of empire, imperial institutions, defence, technology, imperial and colonial cultures, science and exploration. Attention is given not only to the formal empire, from Australasia and the West
Indies to India and the African colonies, but also to China and Latin America, often regarded as central components of a British `informal empire'.

"Magnificent...Taken together, these books constitute an extraordinary feat of organization and scholarship, and they provide the authoritative history of the British Empire for our generation, and the essential starting point of the re-writing of that history which will take place in the next generation. Opinions differ about the British Empire; there can be no disagreement about this superb history of it." --David Cannadine in The Times Literary Supplement

An Excellent Reference Book
By Mark D. Merlino
"The Oxford History of the British Empire" is a very serious historical work that looks at the history of the British Empire from many very differing points of view. This book is the third volue of a five volume series on the history of the British Empire and the general theme of this book is the history of the Britsh Empire in the nineteenth cenutry. Rather than being the work of one author, "The Oxford Hisotry of the British Empire - The Nineteenth Century" is an anthology of articles written by twenty nine different scholars, each of whom focused on their area of expertise.

This volume is divided in two parts. The first part adresses a range of themes related to the political, economic and social history of the British Empire during the nineteenth century. These themes include migration, trade, religion, science, imperial institutions, technology and many other topics. The second part is a series of articles that study different geographical areas, including South East Asia, India, the West Indies, Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Polynesia, Southern Africa and Egypt. This book is also well supplied with graphs, maps, and a thorough chronology of the historical events that took place within the Empire during this time period. One note is that each article tends to have different timeframes that better correspond to important historical events, so the book does not rigidly follow the history of events that took place between 1800-1900.

"The Oxford History of the British Empire" is an invaluable reference book that brings together numerous different facets of British Imperial history. As such, with more than 700 pages of information, it is an excellent place source of information. I would recommend this book especially to people who are interested in one facet of British Imperial history and would like a handy resource to fill in gaps about other facets of British Imperial history. This book would also be of much interest to people who are interested in world history.

Father Night: A Jack McClure Novel (Jack McClure Novels Book 4), by Eric Van Lustbader

New from Eric Van Lustbader, the author of The Bourne Legacy and The Bourne Betrayal, comes Father Night, the thrilling fourth installment in the New York Times bestselling Jack McClure series.

A tidal wave of reform is sweeping across the Middle East. Many lurk in the shadows, eager to seize power--giants of a vast criminal underworld, fueled by revenge and vengeance. Their wars know no end. Their power knows no bounds.

At the center of it all are two men who are inches away from holding the world in their hands: one is known as Dyadya Gourdjiev and the other is known only as the Syrian.

Department of Defense special agent Jack McClure has followed this trail of shadows and lies right into the arms of Gourdjiev's alluring, powerful granddaughter, Annika Dementiev. The lovers are in Moscow when news of Dyadya's failing health draws a slew of vultures--circling, anxious to seize the empire of secrets he spent a lifetime building. Jack and Annika find themselves locked in battle to ensure his safety…but when it comes to Dyadya, nothing is as it seems.

Alli Carson, the child of a dead US president, has become Jack's surrogate daughter. While Jack is in Russia, Alli is targeted by a cyber-stalker who knows more about her than anyone should. With no one to trust but her friend, Vera Bard, Alli is determined to discover the truth, but her path forces her to come face-to-face with the nightmarish terror of her past.

As these two stories play out, Secretary of Defense Dennis Paull, with the help of detectives Nona Hendryx and Alan Frain, follows a trail of lies, corruption, and secret pacts that begins with Washington D.C.'s Head of Detectives.

All paths collide at the feet of one man, an old legend adapting to an ever-changing landscape… a man history might have forsaken, but whose heinous evil is still very much alive: Father Night.

ALLI CARSON’S back slammed against the mat.
“I missed my opportunity.”
“Patience is opportunity.”
She stared up at the broad face with almond eyes and thick black eyebrows.
“I don’t understand,” she said, regaining her feet. “I missed my chance.”
Sensei smiled his enigmatic Ent-like smile. “You mistake chance with advantage.”
He squared to her, his bare feet set at shoulder-width. He was small and wiry, yet more powerful than a six-foot-six linebacker. “In hand-to-hand combat you must always seek the advantage. Advantage comes with patience.” He cocked his head. “Please explain.”
“I can’t,” Alli said.
“Yes,” Sensei insisted, “you can.”
Alli screwed up her face, but let her mind wander freely. “Everyone has a weakness.”
Sensei’s smile widened. “Everyone.”
“Even you, Sensei?”
“Together, we shall find out.” He lunged at her and she backed away. “Stand your ground. Parry, move not an inch, cede nothing.”
For the next five minutes she did as he ordered. She neither retreated nor advanced, no matter the method of his attack, and at the end of that time she saw the opening on his left side every time he advanced. She waited, patient, for his next attack, and when it came, she was ready, feinting left, then right, under his attack. She was just about to land her blow when his right arm whipped around, his hand gripped her shoulder, and he spun her off her feet.
He stood over her for a moment, a big grin on his face. As he leaned over her, he said, “One half learned, one half only.” He held out his hand and, after a moment’s hesitation, she took it. “You must make certain your opponent is not gulling you into a mistake.”
As he pulled her up, she whipped her left leg up, planted her foot on his chest, and pushed from her lower abdomen, the force traveling through her thigh, snapping her bent knee straight, extending through the sole of her foot.
Sensei stumbled backward, but did not let go of her hand. She was yanked forward, a sharp pain in her extended leg. He sought to take advantage of the momentary weakness the pain caused her, wrapping his right arm around her neck as she was falling against him. But she used his own momentum against him, rolling onto her left shoulder, dragging his body up and over her, slamming his shoulder blades against the mat.
Up on one knee, she rested a moment, breathing deeply to allow the pain to flow through her and dissipate. She found that her heartbeat was accelerated; she could hear her pulse in her ears.
Sensei rose to his feet, bowed, and, turning, walked out of the practice room without so much as a backward glance. He said not a word; none was expected. Praise was something Sensei never extended, feeling it gave rise to ego, which had no place in his dojo.
She remained where she was and wiped her damp forehead on her sleeve. Then she collapsed, sitting on the mat in the center of the room, knees drawn up, arms locked around her shins, as she replayed the last two minutes with breathless wonder.
Some moments later, her roommate, Vera Bard, poked her head into the dojo. “Ah, you’re finished. Good.” Her expression troubled, she stepped into the room and tapped her iPad. “I’ve got to show you something. It’s pretty weird.”
As she was about to step onto the mats, Alli waved her back, rose, and came across to her. Plucking her coat off a wooden peg, she slipped into it, and they went outside into the chill December weather. A brilliant blue sky sparkled overhead and frost danced on their exhalations. The campus of Fearington, one of the prime secret services training centers in the D.C. area, surrounded them, the Federal-style buildings interspersed with stands of tall pines and chestnut trees. Farther away, hidden in a series of natural swales, were the Pits: obstacle courses, firing ranges, and the like.
Alli breathed in the fresh air. Her body felt limitless, her mind drunk on her victory over Sensei. She took Vera’s iPad and checked out the screen. Vera took it from her and brought up an Internet site titled allicarsonbitch-slave.com.
Alli gave a little gasp. “What the hell?”
“The link to the site was e-mailed to me and to everyone else at Fearington.”
“Who sent the e-mails?” Alli asked.
“They were sent by you.”
“What? But I didn’t—”
“Of course you didn’t,” Vera said.
There were a series of photos of nude girls bound and tied, arms extended over their heads or out to the sides as they sat in a heavy wooden chair. All had Alli’s head or face Photoshopped onto them. Below each there was a price for photo sets and short films that could be ordered. Farther down were comments: filthy whore, pervert, hot bitch, and the like, but all of them ended with either a smiley face or LOL, cyber-shorthand for “laugh out loud.”
“The good news is that this cyber–smear attack is being viewed as a practical joke inside Fearington. It’s likely someone here is the culprit.”
“Well, it’s not funny.” Alli kept reading. “Look here … here at the end, a date for my supposed death—December twentieth.” She looked up at Vera, appalled. “That’s two weeks from now.”
“Hey, come on, you can’t believe this death threat is real. I mean, someone’s gaming you, sure, and we have to stop it, but…”
“After what I’ve been through I take everything seriously,” Alli said.
“Okay, but … I mean, no one in their right mind would think that’s really you in those photos. Look, here and here again, the lighting’s off.”
But Alli, who had felt a chill run down her spine the moment she saw the images of girls bound into that nightmarish heavy wooden chair, felt plowed under by the intimate eeriness of the photos. And her fear only increased when she saw the date of her supposed death.
“Come on,” Vera said. “We’ll take this to the authorities. They’ll find out who’s behind this shit, put him away, and that’ll be the end of it.”
Alli began to shiver uncontrollably.
At once, Vera put her arm around her roommate’s shoulders, pulling her close. “You’re cold as ice. What is it?”
Alli remained mute, but her mind was churning with terror. December twentieth was the fifth anniversary of the day she had been kidnapped by Morgan Herr.

ALAN FRAINE, captain of detectives of the Metro Police, was halfway through his strenuous thrice-weekly workout when he saw a man enter the cavernous second floor of Muscle Builders Unlimited, wrap a towel around his neck, and check out the rows of StairMasters. Something familiar about the man made the short hairs at the back of Fraine’s neck stir. He continued with his second set of biceps reps, but his mind was no longer in it, and he set the dumbbells aside before he injured himself.
He watched with curiosity as the man strode over to his section. It was then that he recognized Dennis Paull, secretary of the Department of Homeland Security.
Paull straddled the bench next to Fraine and said, “Alan, how’s it going?”
Fraine had had occasion to work with Paull and Jack McClure several months ago in connection with Henry Holt Carson and Middle Bay Bancorp. Carson had been part of a conspiracy to frame Fraine’s best detective, Nona Heroe. Paull had gotten her out from the Feds’ custody.
“Sorry.” Fraine tried to hide the depth of his surprise. “I didn’t recognize you out of your suit, Mr. Secretary.”
“Hardly anyone does,” Paull said. “That’s a gift sometimes.”
“So I imagine,” Fraine said. “I had no idea you were a member.”
Paull produced a complicit grin. “I joined this morning.”
Fraine waited for the shoe to drop. The secretary wasn’t here to break a sweat or to exchange pleasantries.
“Alan, I have a proposition for you.”
Fraine’s ears perked up. “I’m listening.”
“I’m putting together a special group.”
“What kind of group?”
Paull leaned forward. “A SITSPEC—”
“A what?”
Paull waited while a couple of gym rats passed by, talking reps and sets and punitive diets. “A black-ops group. Situation-specific, hence the acronym.”
“Fed-speak.”
“What?”
“Nothing. Go on.”
Paull nodded, lowering his voice, forcing Fraine to lean toward him. “This one is very special. I’d like you and Nona to be part of it.”
“Mr. Secretary, I appreciate the offer, but Nona and I are local and I’m sure your SITSPEC is not. It’s probably not even domestic.”
“There you’re wrong. It is domestic and, as of this moment, it’s local to the D.C. area.”
Fraine considered this possibility. “Why us?”
“I know I can trust you. You and Nona owe me; at the end of the day, I know you won’t turn me down.” He smiled. “Besides, before it’s over, there’s a good chance we’ll be intersecting with Henry Holt Carson’s interests.” His smile turned sly. “I know you can’t pass up that opportunity.”

Lame
By Ken C.
Father Night is not the best novel of the year, far from it. It is a series of supposedly exciting incidents that happen to characters who are either with the good guys or the bad guys, and a few who stroll between the two. Nothing happens that doesn't require some cheesy writing by the author. When I got to the page that said "Part Three" I laughed as if this novel required different parts. The story is so cloudy that I was never sure who to root for. What bothers me is that I did read a good novel written by this author, so I am confused as to why this one is so bad.

Who's on first?
By J. W. Scales
I have read and enjoyed several of Eric Von Lustbader's books over the years, including some the the Jason Bourne series which he took up after the death of Robert Ludlum. This book, however, was difficult to read, and impossible to enjoy. There are three or four different plots, but, in the end, you are left wondering who was trying to accomplish what and why. All of the characters, good and bad, seem to have serious psychological problems. There are bodies strewn all over Washington, DC, and Europe, in large part because all of the military, para-military, and police officers involved seem to have left their body armor at home. I don't know if this is the first of a series, but there are enough loose ends to indicate that this might be true. If it is, I hope the author's future efforts are up to his past works, and not down to the level of FATHER NIGHT.

I have read nearly all Eric Van Lustbaders various series. This story is poorly written ,with a needlessly complex plot. Last 50 pages are the only satisfying part. Almost abandoned it several times.

Review
5 Stars! 100/100 Perfect Score Reviewer Jay Goldsmith, MD (Tulane University School of Medicine) Description This relatively small book (285 pages) pulls together all of the recent advances in the science of bilirubin and the prevention of bilirubin encephalopathy in neonates. Edited by three of the foremost authorities on this topic and written by 24 worldwide experts, the book presents in very readable fashion the most up-to-date science and clinical aspects of neonatal jaundice. Purpose It is intended for both clinicians and investigators as a basis for present day treatment and a stimulus for further investigation. While jaundice is perhaps the most common symptom in neonates, the syndrome of bilirubin neurotoxicity is relatively rare, affecting 1:50,000 to 1 in 200,000 newborns each year. Recent guidelines and reviews as well as alerts from healthcare organizations have focused attention on this problem as potentially preventable. However, not since 1980, when Dr. O'Dell published a book on neonatal hyperbilirubinemia, has this type of comprehensive review been available. The authors have certainly met their objectives in creating this essential reference. Audience The audience includes any healthcare providers who treat newborns or who are interested in the science of bilirubin. The writing is clear and concise and the illustrations and tables, many in color, are easy to understand and complement the text. The editors are internationally known experts in this field and the international group of contributors have similar qualifications. Features The 13 chapters review the science of bilirubin (genetics, biochemistry, transport, and metabolism) and then the clinical aspects of jaundice management including epidemiology, public policy, phototherapy, and other treatments. An excellent review of the biochemistry of bilirubin toxicity is complemented by a full chapter on kernicterus. The easy-to-read text is complemented by some wonderful color drawings and photomicrographs. I could find no serious omissions from this comprehensive review. Assessment Although every general neonatal textbook has a chapter on hyperbilirubinemia and there have been several comprehensive reviews in major journals over the last decade, there has not been a complete review of this type for over 30 years. This book is strongly recommended to all healthcare providers who care for neonates. Music and Consciousness: Philosophical, Psychological, and Cultural Perspectives, by David Clarke, Eric Clarke

What is consciousness? Why and when do we have it? Where does it come from, and how does it relate to the lump of squishy grey matter in our heads, or to our material and social worlds? While neuroscientists, philosophers, psychologists, historians, and cultural theorists offer widely different perspectives on these fundamental questions concerning what it is like to be human, most agree that consciousness represents a 'hard problem'.

The emergence of consciousness studies as a multidisciplinary discourse addressing these issues has often been associated with rapid advances in neuroscience-perhaps giving the impression that the arts and humanities have arrived late at the debating table. The longer historical view suggests otherwise, but it is probably true that music has been under-represented in accounts of consciousness. Music and Consciousness aims to redress the balance: its twenty essays offer a timely and
multi-faceted contribution to consciousness studies, critically examining some of the existing debates and raising new questions.

The collection makes it clear that to understand consciousness we need to do much more than just look at brains: studying music demonstrates that consciousness is as much to do with minds, bodies, culture, and history. Incorporating several chapters that move outside Western philosophical traditions, Music and Consciousness corrects any perception that the study of consciousness is a purely occidental preoccupation. And in addition to what it says about consciousness the volume also presents a
distinctive and thought-provoking configuration of new writings about music.

Review
This collection of papers, consisting of twenty well-crafted chapters, offers a variety of approaches to the topics of music and consciousness. In particular, the chapters related to embodied and especially enactive music cognition may trigger the interest of constructivists and lead to further explorations in this steadily growing field of enactive music cognition. About the Author

David Clarke is Professor of Music at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. He is a music theorist in the broadest sense, interested in analytical, philosophical, and cultural approaches to musical and meaning. These concerns have informed his work on the British composer, Michael Tippett, on whom he is a leading authority and the author of several books and essays. Similar priorities have also shaped his recent research into cultural pluralism and musical postmodernism-which has yielded articles on Eminem, 'Elvis and Darmstadt', and BBC Radio 3's 'Late Junction'. David Clarke is also a practicing musician-a violinist and conductor, and lately a vocalist in the North Indian khy? l tradition.

Eric Clarke is Heather Professor of Music at Oxford, and Professorial Fellow of Wadham College. He has published widely on various issues in the psychology of music, musical meaning, and the analysis of pop music, including Empirical Musicology (OUP 2004, co-edited with Nicholas Cook), Ways of Listening (OUP 2005), The Cambridge Companion to Recorded Music (CUP 2009, co-edited with Nicholas Cook, Daniel Leech-Wilkinson and John Rink) and Music and Mind in Everyday Life (OUP 2010, co-authored with Nicola Dibben and Stephanie Pitts). He was an Associate Director of the AHRC Research Centre for the History and Analysis of Recorded Music, and is an Associate Director of the successor Centre for Musical Performance as Creative Practice (2009-14). He is on a number of editorial boards, and was elected a Fellow of the British Academy in 2010.

Two Mysteries That Give Life to Life
By Dr. Debra Jan Bibel
A conundrum wrapped in an enigma, to paraphrase Mr. Churchill, are the "Hard Problems" of consciousness-mind and the power and inter-relationships of music. This book will not offer any solutions but it will outline how music may be a key in understanding how we are aware that we are aware. It also brings the two problems usefully together. The editors of the collection of academic essays from international scholars and investigators are British musicologists David Clarke (Newcastle) and Eric Clarke (0xford), who each contribute a chapter. As in most scholarly collections, the sections vary widely in style and readability. They are truly at the graduate level, for those who have studied, informally or professional, some aspect of cognitive psychology, neuroscience, or the anthropological side of musicology. I strongly suggest that readers do NOT read the leading chapter at first because it could very well be off-putting, as it is philosophically difficult and dense for the uninitiated. It can be best approached after chapter 2 or later. The topics have an extraordinary range, from Husserl's foundations of music cognition (with the roles of memory and anticipation) to Buddhist abidharma and meditation on sensation, perception, and consciousness, from dhrupad in Hindustanti vocal music to psychedelic experiences as related to music, from the essential connection of movement in music (and in face-to-face communication) to the social unity of music and consciousness. Some cultures do not even have a word for music, as it is a unity with dance and ritual. I personally have been engaged in both problems for decades and must say that this book has brought the matter into fine focus and I gained new insights. This is especially with the concepts of movement in music assimilation, the learned and inherent mimicking memory neurons, and the distinction of the alap of dhrupad versus the alap of more modern instrumental ragas (an aha! reaction after many years of listening to the Dagar Brothers and other Indian musicians). This multi-disciplinary book is an important resource for further study. Every reader will surely relate to some element of the discussion (perhaps from meditation, the use of entheogens, or experiences of deep listening or trance) and then be able to correlate other concepts. Thus, this reading journey may be arduous but rewards are aplenty.

The Best Short Stories of Fyodor Dostoevsky (Modern Library Classics), by Fyodor Dostoevsky

This collection, unique to the Modern Library, gathers seven of Dostoevsky's key works and shows him to be equally adept at the short story as with the novel. Exploring many of the same themes as in his longer works, these small masterpieces move from the tender and romantic White Nights, an archetypal nineteenth-century morality tale of pathos and loss, to the famous Notes from the Underground, a story of guilt, ineffectiveness, and uncompromising cynicism, and the first major work of existential literature. Among Dostoevsky's prototypical characters is Yemelyan in The Honest Thief, whose tragedy turns on an inability to resist crime. Presented in chronological order, in David Magarshack's celebrated translation, this is the definitive edition of Dostoevsky's best stories.

Enduring
By Prokievitch Bazarov
Dostoyevsky is usually regarded as one of the finest novelists who ever lived. Literary modernism, existentialism, and various schools of psychology, theology, and literary criticism have been profoundly shaped by his ideas. His works are often called prophetic because he so accurately predicted how Russia's revolutionaries would behave if they came to power. In his time he was also renowned for his activity as a journalist.
In 1876-77 Dostoyevsky devoted his energies to Dnevnik pisatelya, which he was now able to bring out in the form he had originally intended. A one-man journal, for which Dostoyevsky served as editor, publisher, and sole contributor, the Diary represented an attempt to initiate a new literary genre. Issue by monthly issue, the Diary created complex thematic resonances among diverse kinds of material: short stories, plans for possible stories, autobiographical essays, sketches that seem to lie on the boundary between fiction and journalism, psychological analyses of sensational crimes, literary criticism, and political commentary. The Diary proved immensely popular and financially rewarding, but as an aesthetic experiment it was less successful, probably because Dostoyevsky, after a few intricate issues, seemed unable to maintain his complex design. Instead, he was drawn into expressing his political views, which, during these two years, became increasingly extreme. Specifically, Dostoyevsky came to believe that western Europe was about to collapse, after which Russia and the Russian Orthodox church would create the kingdom of God on earth and so fulfill the promise of the Book of Revelation. In a series of anti-Catholic articles, he equated the Roman Catholic church with the socialists because both are concerned with earthly rule and maintain (Dostoyevsky believed) an essentially materialist view of human nature. He reached his moral nadir with a number of anti-Semitic articles.
Because Dostoyevsky was unable to maintain his aesthetic design for the Diary, its most famous sections are usually known from anthologies and so are separated from the context in which they were designed to fit. These sections include four of his best short stories--"Krotkaya" ("The Meek One"), "Son smeshnogo cheloveka" ("The Dream of a Ridiculous Man"), "Malchik u Khrista na elke" ("The Heavenly Christmas Tree"), and "Bobok"--as well as a number of autobiographical and semifictional sketches, including "Muzhik Marey" ("The Peasant Marey"), "Stoletnaya" ("A Hundred-Year-Old Woman"), and a satire, "Spiritizm. Nechto o chertyakh Chrezychaynaya khitrost chertey, esli tolko eto cherti" ("Spiritualism. Something about Devils. The Extraordinary Cleverness of Devils, If Only These Are Devils"). These are some rare stories indeed...

Dostoyevsky's creative power and profundity of thought
By Matthew M. Yau
This collection of seven stories presented in chronological order, by David Magarshack, is not only unique to the Modern Library classics series but to all published works. This celebrated translation explores many of the recurring themes in Dostoyevsky's longer works and presents apropos the silhouettes of his characters in novels. The short works accent his creative power and profundities of thought and manifest his tour de force as a raconteur.
1. White Nights (1848)
The title refers to the twilight summer nights in Petersberg. A tender and romantic story, this piece to a large extent is autobiographical of the days Dostoyevsky spent alone in Petersberg. The main character is a dreamer who cannot remember what he was dreaming and sometimes had no recollection of how everything had all happened. A sentimental theme develops against the background of Dostoyevsky's own personal impressions during his nocturnal wanderings, filled with gentle humor and delicate touches of genuine feelings. This piece affords vague hint of theme in Crime and Punishment. It is a story that odes to a moment of bliss that is sufficient for a whole of a man's life.
2. The Honest Thief (1848)
The central character of this piece is an anti-hero whose tragedy consists of his helplessness to shun and to resist evil. Like "White Nights", this piece again paves the way for the longer work in the sense of punishment.
3. The Christmas Tree and a Wedding (1849)
David Magarshack calls this piece the most artistically perfect short story in Dostoyevsky's early days as a fiction writer. It happens to be my personal favorite besides the uncompromisingly cynical "The Notes From Underground." The piece is savagely satiric and ridicules the preposterous, fawning adults in high society. Dostoyevsky delineates an indelible scene of pure joy only perhaps manifested in our children during the very first years of their life. Through the narrator's admiration for the children, the absurdities of their parents are shamelessly magnified to the fullness. A career opportunist, in spite of his importance and dignity, went out of his way to pursue an underage heiress, an object of his desire that could not become a real object at least another five years.
4. The Peasant Marey (1876)
Dostoyevsky probably adds new touch and imbues his sentiment in depicting this anecdote with a serf during his early childhood. Written during his imprisonment in Siberia, this piece captures the vividness of a brief encounter that must have been hidden in his mind without even his knowing it. Only God perhaps might have seen from above what profound human feeling, delicate tenderness the heart of a serf who neither expected nor dreamed of his emancipation.
5. A Gentle Creature (1876)
This is one of the least comprehensible pieces in this collection despite the style of writing conveys the reality of the situation. Dostoyevsky himself regarded the story "eminently realistic" and surely accents the psychologist in him. A husband tells of the events that invariably led to the suicide of his wife. The rambling, fragmented, bearing-no-cause narrative style epitomizes the thought-process and speech of an inveterate hypochondriac. Succession of memories dawns on him the truth as the prose takes a more concrete form. The story explores the rare theme of insensibility in human relationships.
6. Notes From Underground
Doubtless Dostoyevsky's most significant short work, this piece inaugurated existential literature in the 19th century. The Underground Man goes out of his way to offend his hearers, with frequent contradictory comments, rambles on with no reason and bears no cause. So often does he mean to say something but conceal his last word out of fear. The Underground Man is ubiquitous in society and is shadowed in those who feel disgusted with real life. The personage transcends the personal struggles and assumes a universal significance that embraces mankind. It is reminiscent of "White Nights" only that the latter flows along the pleasant surface of human thought and emotion.
7. The Dream of a Ridiculous Man
The piece along with "The Notes from Underground" voice Dostoyevsky's final judgment of mankind. It explores the purging of conscience and the existence of human being and consciousness.
The collection shows that Dostoyevsky is capable and adept in surveying the human scene with complete detachment. It serves as a fine introduction to Dostoyevsky's works and as a prelude to his longer works.

Brilliant, needs more recognition!
By arsenal
Some of these short stories are well-known (Notes from the Underground). However, if you've never read White Nights, this is a must buy. Each short story is unique and can carry itself, but White Nights is the story that sticks with me the longest. I read these stories on a whim, and it brought me a whole new interest in Dostoevsky. I read "The Gambler" most recently, also brilliant. And right now I've just started "Crime and Punishment." The writing style of Dostoevsky is right up my ally. Each of his characters become so familiar with the reader, because of the way he reads out their thoughts and inner ramblings in a way I never thought possible. Dostoevsky's true gift, in my opinion, are his characters and how distinct they are. It's hard to describe, but I can really feel the psychological differences between each person. Remarkable.
